The whole genre is demonstrating cult-like behavior across the board. Developers INTENTIONALLY stir up "Us vs Them" mentality. You see it in large budget games like SC and you see it in small budget ones like SoL.
Folks just have to step back and recognize that these are just games. The world won't end if someone criticizes your current play thing. It doesn't make you and less of a person if the game you fanatically followed for a year turns out to be a dud.
Once you've invested hundreds it's so much harder to just walk away. Once you've invested thousands it's almost impossible.
In a certain way the whole ship thing has proved genius not just in bringing in revenue but in making people feel viscerally invested in the game long before it's ready to launch.

I can't believe how many SC fans are jumping on this guy. That's literally why he posted his clickbait article. If SC fans don't want to get butthurt so hard maybe they should stop defending SC like it's GOTC(century) and just chill the hell out.
Must be a slow news day. Personally I found the article, blog post or whatever you want to call it, quite boring. Is it really that hard to find something that's worth writing about these days.
On a side note:
What about that lifetime contract Lebron signed with Nike for 60 million a year.
Anyone bought any of that Star Wars edition Cover Girl make up yet?

what do you mean by 'whole genre' the only game that is close to Star Citizen is Elite Dangerous which by all measurements has been an outstanding success story.
The MMO genre...

That's it, you've convinced me. I'm buying a ship to support this game that I will most likely never play, for the sole purpose of watching the naysayers eat crow. Maybe I'll buy a few packages & start some giveaway threads.

Go for it. I bought in just to get Squadron 42.

what I dont understand is why critics of the game care one way or another what other people like and what other people do with their money
Why do people care if their neighbor rents their house out to a college frat?
Nothing happens in a bubble. Nobody can stop you from spending your money any way you like, but your spending habits DO impact everyone else.
what?
how does that comparison even remotely compare to someone spending money on a game? does the fan come knocking on your door telling you about it?
Why is F2P now widely accepted or even expected? Why is it accepted now that you pay a company to help test their game? Why is it standard procedure now to pay money for a game before it's even started?
Why? Because someone else accepted those changes and thus changed the industry. Not saying any of the above are good or bad changes, but they are changes that impact everybody.

So you come here posting another negative piece about SC(which is all you seem to do is slam SC, CR and SC backers), you're a known die-hard supporter of Derek Smart, you quote him constantly, post his crap constantly - and you call SC backers cult members?
Looks we have people like you who are willing to post nothing but positive things and continually argue against anything that might not smell right about SC. Seriously if you haven't found one thing to complain about then you are just as wrong as him.
Sooo, because I don't come here and voice my concerns you assume I don't have issues with the direction or the management of the game? I have voiced my concerns and made statements regarding certain aspects of the game I have an issue with. You just weren't here when I posted them...or over on the main forum boards where I made most of my comments. Doesn't do much good to discuss them here where the developers are less likely to see what I wrote compared to the main boards. I post that I think the game will eventually release and it will be all(or at least 75%) of what we were promised. I think SQ42 will be awesome and I still think that once all the PU is up and has 75% of what we were promised is in it - this game will rock. Do I have a positive outlook? Yep. Am I a fan? Yep. Nothing wrong with that.
What is wrong are people that are actively trying to undermine the development of this game with rumors and false statements regarding it. The OP in this thread has done nothing but spread such nonsense and he gets 90% of the crap he post from one person Derek Smart. Derek Smart has proven he doesn't know anything about the game, his only purpose is to try to ruin the game - which he has stated numerous times. The OP has repeatedly shown that they are just like Derek Smart...all they want to do is see the game no get made - they are actively trying to make it fail. Do you really want to be a part of that?
How can DS ruin the game, am confused about that. The only one that can ruin the game is CR, he has full control over it and the money.
Tell that to Bill Cosby or any person, male or female, accused of something. That caught the public's eye. Doesn't matter if you did, or didn't. Will or Won't. Capable or Incapable.

I think it is great that Chris Roberts and his team managed to raise a triple-A budget out of crowd funding. It just happened to often that publishers pushed developers to release unfinished games or to cut features.
Another good thing. The majority of the budget can be used for actual development. And with 100kk you can develop a lot. Thats why their game features expand and expand and expand. In other triple-A titles aprox 50% of the budget is used for marketing. Sounds to me like a fair trade. So let them be cultists! xD
what I dont understand is why critics of the game care one way or another what other people like and what other people do with their money
Because if SC fails or worse, turns into a scam, then it can do great harm to crowd funding in general and crowd funded video games in particular. Try and see the forest instead of just the single tree.

I really don't like that word 'only'; you're forgetting No Man's Sky, Vendetta Online, Ascent: The Space Game, Shores of Hazeron, Jumpgate, Rodina, Infinity: Battlescape, Rogue System... Elite: Dangerous doesn't occupy such a lonely place.
I also believe he meant 'whole genre' as in MMORPGs.

If this was the 1st time somethings been said but its not. Man.. you cant even say one negative thing about the game or its "hate"... just disagree you get "haters going to hate". Those that paid .. you made them VERY VERY happy. There truly is one born every second. Lol you can tell the ones that gave.

It could fail, think no denys that, but how does certain groups of people at every opportunity painting a false image of the game development failing help? How does a journalist company label and entire community and those who disagree a rabid "cult" help? How does insulting CR, CIG, SC or it community help?
Not saying everyone should be positive, thats nonsense, negative feedback is always good, but the majority are doing the above, which helps no one.
it seem there are those who have actually legit concerns and doubts, but then those (who are more vocal) who seem to relish in the idea of this game falling to it's knees just so they could say "I told you so", those who don't care what happens to gaming or crowdfunding.
Think he's question is directed at these people more than anything

1. most of the critics of Star Citizen do not come off as being fans of Kickstarter concept with concerns that SC might harm Kicstarter concepts.
2. Its too late for Kickstarter to be harmed. Already far to many fantastic success stories. One game (even a big one) cant hurt it now.

Only 30% of kickstarter games have released. Of that 30% how many of them are good games I dont know? So for every game thats come out there has been 2.3 games that were vaporware. Of that 3 out of 10 games that released, again, how many are worth your money? Seems like a huge crap shoot to me.

30% is excellent. Even better than I had thought. More over those that do succeeded are EXTREEMLY good games that have in some degree affected the entire industry.
Success rate of small businesses is 10% by the way.

I've little doubt that CIG is exploiting it, regardless of whether the game eventually appears or not.
