The base game is quite fun. The expansion isn't so good.
The community is turning quite sour. The devs are focusing on a hamster wheel approach where you grind two dungeons for tokens, to reach the minimum gear level to grind the next two dungeons for tokens, to reach the minimum ... and so on. This has turned the community into a race to a higher gear level, frequently at the expense of common decency. People blaming things they don't understand on undergeared players is frequent, and when I last played my guild chat was constantly full of people saying awful things about whoever they were playing with at the time. This may be a reflection of NA moreso than the game, though, as the Japanese servers are reportedly incredibly helpful, in addition to having progressed far more than the NA servers.
I really dislike the combat in the game, it tries to balance out an absurdly long GCD with having 15 or so off GCD cooldowns to manage for each class. This means you end up memorizing the first 30 seconds or so of button presses, before simply playing whack-a-mole with cooldowns at a glacial pace. This awful design is paired with dungeons where every pull is an aoe pull. There is some CC in the game but you will never use it. You just stick your face into things and aoe aoe aoe. When you get to the bosses, they hit for less damage than the aoe pulls you did on the way in. This results in tanks playing in DPS stance, and raid fights tuned for tanks outputting max dps in their damage stance.
So yeah, everything to do with actual combat really stinks unfortunately. It is a shame because some of the boss mechanics would be fun if not held back by the combat. There are good sides that I think make the game worth a visit, though.
It is an incredibly beautiful game with graphics and music that are really impressive.
Nearly all the quests in the base game (including crafting quests) feel like thought and effort was put into writing them. Most of them have cutscenes and it goes a long way towards making the world feel alive.
The game is like one long fanservice to final fantasy fans. You will fight bosses you recognize, hear reworked music that will give you huge nostalgia trips, and see little nods and references everywhere.
I would say the game is something people should see, but I think anybody looking for any sort of long term home here will be disappointed by the terrible combat and community. This is just another "grind your ilvl" game, and the combat is not enjoyable enough for it to survive on that alone.
Are you describing Wow or ffxiv? :-P This is common in mmorpgs as far as the hamster wheel approach.

Somebody is afraid of change. Either that or HW came out and you never bought it.
If you did, you would always remember:
Some of the most heart wrenching, funny, and epic things have happened in HW. ESPECIALLY during the story.
I don't want to spoil anything for anybody who has not yet gotten this far but, I would love to post spoiler videos. Long cutscenes that will make you cry, laugh, and be shocked in awe.
If the combat feels slow for you, then you're playing you're job wrong. Get good. And by the way, you know nothing of the community in game.
This site and reddit do not reflect those actually in game. Or you could just not be a dick to people in game like you are to people here. Maybe? Or you're one of those new age people who gets mad when they have to socialize in an mmo? I can get along with any community in any game, even games I despise. What exactly are you doing wrong?
This is extremely ignorant. Literally every single class memorizes buttons in a preset pattern for the first 30 seconds of the fight, then waits for the glacial GCD and plays whackamole with their off GCD cooldowns as they come up.
Every. Single. Class.
You implying it is me doing it wrong is either your ignorance of how to play any class correctly, or just trolling.
The community being a problem in NA is no secret. The japanese community clears more content and has a reputation for being far nicer.
Ironically enough your comments claiming to defend the community and telling me I have to "get good" are a good example of the type of toxicity a player can expect at max level.
Edit: I see now you are just trolling throughout this thread, it seems many posters express similar sentiments to my own.
Also, I never commented negatively on HW's main story. It is one of the few positive aspects. It is every quest outside of the main story that is terribly written without an ounce of effort or thought put in, unlike the base game where every quest felt well done. The main story is not long enough to justify the expac, and after playing through SWTOR more I am no longer nearly as impressed with the HW msq as I was before.
You are absolutely right. The combat is exactly like the Boss fights. You memorize a rotation and repeat it. It's the only way to beat the extremely tight tuned DPS checks in most dungeons.
The community is very toxic and elitist. I was in the same LS as Mr.Happy (one of the few FFXIV youtubers) I remember back when we did coil and it was required you level an alt for coil. When new people wanted to join our FC they had to have at least one alt fully geared for coil and they needed to show everyone their DPS rotation before being accepted. Third party DPS loggers where used constantly to judge performance. That is what bad content is doing, it creates bad communities.
People forget how to have fun playing a game. Although in this case it's no wonder since the content is not fun to play.
The best part of the game is the story and graphics. But it does not justify a subscription when the rest of the game is boring. It's enough for me to come back every couple of months to continue the main story line and then let my sub lapse again. Sometimes i can do it with the free weekends.
That sounds more like your FC/LS where more elitist. That in an of itself doesn't mean the rest of the community is toxic or elitist. I was in a very laid back LS and the community on the server i was on was very laid back.

It really is these days, unfortunately. Like I said at the end, though, I think the combat keeps FFXIV from being as appealing as the other hamster wheel games. I wrote a post a few above explaining exactly why the combat does not appeal to me.
I have not played WoW in years, I do not know if anything else I wrote applies to WoW.

I much prefer the combat in FFXIV vs other games in all honesty. While it is slower to an extent it also feels a lot nicer with each move actually being a move.
So was using the software token app on my cell and I was stupid by not jotting down the emergency token removal code. So my grandson who is 2 and pretty damn good at these free games on my cell. Well he decided to remove my token software. Had to call support and in 2 minutes I had someone on phone and removing the token from my account. Have to give support two thumbs up for being fast with helping me out. Coming from ESO it was like night and day on support.
Now I made a backup of emergency code and put Norton app lock on so the kid can't remove my stuff. He is smart thou, never know what he may end up doing.
Well, to sum up what has been said Final Fantasy XIV is fine to play if
1) You avoid investing in the housing system. It's a player trap to keep people playing and logging in.
2) Don't plan on trying to grind every single craft and gathering job at once. It just is a bit too space intensive even with the generous number of slots they give.
3) Can handle going through early content on a skeleton crew of mercenary players, as much of the early content utilizes force grouping to progress the story. Not bad when the community is around that stage, but a horrible idea late expansion when everyone is just sitting around grinding the latest currency.
4) Are fine with the standard Grocery List quest system we've had for a while in MMORPGs that are themepark based. This game is better than most since the lore behind some side quests can be quirky and entertaining, but without voice acting it's easy to graze past the walls of text and just go objective hunting in the wilderness.
