I agree with this too. I loved my Crat. Too bad I was forced to stop Playing AO several years ago after my video card upgrade no longer properly rendered the game's DirectX 7 (yes 7) based engine.
I always felt that pet classes were like playing with 2 toons... they always made everything seem so damn easy... hence the reputation of being a solo friendly class.
Now if they made it so that NPCs would ignore pets and go after the masters... then that would mean you'd have to actually do something because instead of your pet being the tank and you the dps, you are now the tank and your pet is the dps.
for you try the necromancer in Age of Conan, pets are nothing more than a long duration dps spell for them, yse you can make the pets get agro for about 3 seconds but that's only doable around every 10 minutes or so

Don't forget the high level mission that will give Bureaucrats access to the Crat Assistant pet. Also Crats also can craft up coffee and make that briefcase that allows them to access their personal Bankspace from anywhere in the game.
Anarchy Online also has two other pet using Classes. The Meta-Physicists with their three demons and the Engineer with their giant killer robots.
EQ2 has probably the best pets for Necromancer or Conjurer.
Coercer and Illusionist also but not near as powerful although they are fun to play.
Not too versatile though,i never had much fun playing those,they were ALWAYS your tank just a few different options on what kind of tank.Also the damage abilities on your player were extremely weak to offset your pet,so it was basically like taking one strong class and splitting it into two,defeats the purpose really. That is why i feel FFXI is superior to any pet class i have ever played.To be honest i usually don't get into pet classes in any other game because they are just not very good.
Yes sorry to the poster above me,i forgot about the often forgot about Puppetmaster class,a very strong pet and cool ideas as well.
For some ,actually many players they also enjoy the Summoner class,i just never mentioned it because it is not a strong as say a Beastmaster or Puppetmaster but is close.FFXI basically has three options for a pet class.

If at any point, it makes a difference to your trying it again the new engine runs on dx9.

I tried it. Yeah I could load the game but........ Too little too late. Every one in our multi-Org alliance has left and moved on. Even they guys that were there since Beta. I logged back in, took a look around and re-branded the game.

I loved all 3 too. But MP's Pets were terrible in that they did not scale. Once you were able to cast the top nanos, Usually by TL4-5, That's as good as they got.
Ultima Online had a creature handler/tamer skill that was pretty good.
I really enjoyed the Necromancer in Everquest. It had such a diverse array of abilities. It could break up camps, cast invisibility, kite, fear kite, charm undead, direct damage, self healing, damage over time, feign death, and many other things I'm sure I'm missing. For a while they were the only class in EQ that could give their pets weapons and skeletons just look neat. They were a very solo oriented class though due to being shunned by most societies.
I loved all 3 too. But MP's Pets were terrible in that they did not scale. Once you were able to cast the top nanos, Usually by TL4-5, That's as good as they got.
The poor MP players have a long history of neglect by the devs of Funcom.
During game release, MPs were only allowed to have one of their three pets out. I think it took a few years before the Devs decided to allow MPs to have all three summoned pets out at the same time. I still recall the day that I logged back in to summon all three pets while hanging out in West Athens. Some other player comes running up to me and says "Hey mistah, can I get a ballon?" Needless to say most of your summoned pets look like ballons.
Like GeezerGamer mentioned, MPs have some incredible buffs that allow to summon pets, equip gear and cast nano formulas up to 100+ levels to us. When I heard of the new pets that were being added to Shadow Lands, we were all excited with the idea that we can finally get new more powerful pets. No it turns out that these new pets have level pre-reqs which go against the basic nature of MPs and their buffs. Plus some of these new pets summoning formulas need to be purchased from vendors where you need to go through long missions to gain access too. So new leveling MPs are stuck with the same original demon pet for 85 levels.
During character creation, they give all new MPs one of the worst weapons in the game.It looks like a hot pink melee shield which does chemical damage. Chem damage isn't too bad but in order to wield a stronger version of weapons in the game, you have to assign IP points to certain skills. This shield weapon requires a lot of IP investment to use which could go to a better weapon and to more important skills. A lot of players went with the silly shield only to find that they gimped themselves. During the first few years, I don't believe there were any IP reset options so many MP players had to restart new characters to fix the mistake. It would have been a better choice of the game designers to have given them a better MP type weapon in the first place. Most go with a low IP intense pistol or bow.

I had fun the GW2 Mesmer and I used a build that was designed to use the Pistol Phantasms. Keeping 3 of them up simultaneously was tough. But that was slick as hell when I did. Not sure I would consider that a "Pet" class though.
I'd say EQ(2) BeastLord class for obvious reasons when looking at the name...
I'd also say Lineage II (pre-GoD!) for every player that has managed to raise his wolf past level 55 and changed it into a Great Wolf. That thing was an awesome DPS machine and at levels 65 and 75 it gained an extra skill that made it rock even more.
OP asked for currently available games. Presumably he's looking for suggestions for something that he can play. Personally i'd go with WoW Hunter or Warlock.
City of Villains Mastermind is the benchmark to measure pet classes.
I actually love this kind of playstyle. I use a mod in Skyrim that modifies the Conjuration tree so that for every other skill level perk you attain, you are allowed to summon and extra soul (Atronach or Undead). In the Based game, Conjuration sucks. You have one pet until you level to 100 then you get a 2nd. But this way, I get a 2nd one with a perk in Conj. I forget the levels, but you start off with one, put in a perk get a 2nd, then you get a 3rd 2 more perks later. And finally at 100, you can get 2 more for a total of 5. There is another mod called Cold Harbor Re summoned. OMG, I love those 2 mods together. You run around with 5 master level daedra summoned. It's interesting at Legendary difficulty.
It sounds too easy. Even with one summons you will destroy everything. They are quite powerful. It makes the destruction tree look so very weak by comparison.
While my favorite the EQ Necromancer the one in Diablo 2 was quite fun. The sheer amount of mobs it could summon was nice in a game where there was immense amounts of mobs attacking you. Plus skeletons look cool. Lots of skeletons of different varieties (mage, tank, rogue, etc) is even neater looking. Especially in a dark game like Diablo 2.

There were a few games where the AI would ignore the pets. Some games it was certain mobs so you would have to know your mob AI.
