imageWomen in Gaming - Undead Labs' Sanya Weathers - General Interviews

Women are becoming an increasingly significant sector in games development, taking part in every aspect of bringing games to life. As one of the often lesser-known sectors of the industry, we wanted to shine the spotlight on some incredible leaders including our once (and future!?) columnist, Sanya Weathers from Undead Labs.

Gaming isn't about gender. You wouldn't interview a male dev and call it Men in Gaming. Stop making it about gender. It doesn't matter what gender a dev or gamer is to any real gamer.

While it is nice to see more and more women breaking in to the biz, they do tend to end up in human rescourse roles such a community, marketing and representation. If this is because there are so few female coders out there or some lingering bias would be interesting to look in to.

But at least where i live they have "nerd camp" for girls where they can try their hand at game design without the usual baggage of norms. This is a good way to open up what is still a fairly male dominated feild and break down old norms.

What the heck is a "real gamer"?

According to most of the posts on this site I have nothing in common with most "gamers" other than I like to play "some" games.

The reason they have an article like this is because there aren't as many women in games as men. That means their is a discrepancy and it is one that is notable therefore why not talk about it?

Twitch boobie streamers don't even play the games they just run game footage in the background. What you never heard of fake gamer girls?

Now if only all this talk of professionalism would show it's face in game designs.Plenty of ideas, yes again i like to see some of those in game designs.

I think what is happening are businesses are hiring too many people who talk the good talk but never perform and even when they under perform they talk a good talk lol.

From what i have been seeing in game design "results"you might as well hire people off the street. But hey devs are doing something right, they seem to have a lot of gamer's fooled,PR and marketing seems to work.

Well talking the talk works for about 2-3 months, then gamer's start filing out of these games, sometimes even sooner.

Personally i wouldn't care less about whom i hired when comes to gender but i don't think this article was about gender anyhow, just a title because the interviewed person happen to be female.

Well there is a (hopefully) small but VERY loud subset of "real gamers" to whom the gender is very important. To who any idea of change in the norms equal the end of the civil world.

So to say it does not matter is to sake a very naive stance on the subject.

Probably for the same reason why women tend to be the center of attention in guild/voice chat, they can embody nerd-fantasy.

I´d be more inclined to point to the historical division of labour between men and women... But you might have a point. I can see how the reasoning that it does not hurt to have a female head of communication in a male dominated field carry some weight.

Talking about "women in gaming" is only allowed on this site as long as it's all positive.

Once somebody talks about i.e. the drama women often cause in guilds, about many of them using gaming for self-display or fishing for comments on their looks (i.e. Pokket) etc. it's inappropriate and gets deleted.

I often see women starting this gender thing, but most of the time they aren't able to take some heat in return to it.

I ask you this then, how normally you see females choosing exact sciences over anything else really?

during college we would see the newbies who was coming, we know half of then would quit before the end of the 1st year, computer science is not easy, its like learning a new language, and save for one or 2 females most would quit, if not quit would go pretty average over, but since they was females most guys would go out of they way to help then so they would get enough to pass

and for the blame, they blame everyone, but you know the most they say females are going more often for a industry and then the industry go well below what was the norm so years back....

also don't be so defensive, it don't help you in anything.

for the whole article it shouldn't matter if is male or female it should matter the place he is in is the place he worked to get there, not because its a female/gay/black/yellow/blue/hetero or whatever, the whole thing already tells me even teh writer don't belive woman can get there and when some does its a amazing feat, with really is not

At the college where I work, there are plenty of females in the programming classes.  They tend to want more job security and avoid the gaming industry.  Most of them go to work in other industries, medical being a big one.  There are plenty of female coders working at Google and other "safe" companies with a lot less turnover than the gaming industry.

When you look at the game industry over decades and see how bad it really is and how few people last more than 10 years doing it, it can be scary.

Sanya was always cool to everyone in DAOC and a lot of people had much respect for her. Was wondering what ever happened to her since most of the other big names in DAOC appeared more openly after mythic died.

Indeed. Before and after Dark Age of Camelot's launch, Sanya was the best CM in the business.
