There are a lot of people on these boards that have a very narrow minded view of what a MMORPG is. There and Second Life are at the very extremes of the 'genre' with MORPG's like Guild Wars and D2 at the other extreme. Most MMORPG's fall somewhere in the middle.
As to why they are criticised so heavily, MMO's tend to generate a huge amount of fanboi-ism and anything that dares to be different (or dares to take subscribers away, or dares to change the genre in some way) get lambasted by those seeking to maintain the status quo (because it's what they are used to).
I personally found SL to be too limiting, I wanted the ability to import my Maya models into it rather than struggling with an unintuitive boolean based modeller, and a quick email to the devs confirmed that they had no plans for an importer. It also had abysmal lag, rendering it almost unplayable for me.
I have good news for you, since There uses Gmax to build and submit objects you could import them. Yes I know many hard core members see There as a joke. When I found the website I thought it was a some what stupid idea too. But when I signed up it became addicting.
I went exploring and found all these things which told of an ancient history. I still have not finished finding all which there is to be found. I have found that why people stay in There is not for the features but for the friends. I have met over 550 or more and I don't regret it.
The community has bonded so much that in our darkest hours we have supported each other. Durning black friday when we thought the company was closing many of us shed tears. The people you meet and the experiences you have are so life changing.

I just want to know why people hate There so much. Believe me, I hate the fact that it is a MMORPG and it must be talked about around people who don't appriate it. But the forums are dominated by higher class members and such.
There Universe is mostly dead now. So that leaves me here! I'm sorry but if you don't like There because there is no action thats not the case. We have paint balling arenas and race cources. I just don't get what there is not to like, I simply don't get it.

It's NOT an RPG. That's the problem. You can't be an MMORPG if you're not a RPG! Yes, you play a role in it, but it's not really a game. Get over yourself, and There. People here discuss actual games, and not virtual worlds.
I just want to know why people hate There so much. Believe me, I hate the fact that it is a MMORPG and it must be talked about around people who don't appriate it. But the forums are dominated by higher class members and such.

Look in the MMORPG list and you'll see There. So if its in that list it must be a MMORPG! The thing I don't get is why does there have to be blood and gore in every game you play? I don't get it, There is a nice and calm world. I don't get why you don't like There.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, they are all upset because of the whole can't get laid thing. If you're having fun, who cares what a bunch of disgruntled sexless nerds say?
Ya right. I'm sorry but it just makes me so angry to see people calling There a chat room. It is a member built Virtual World and again, its not a chat room. If you read the quote I put in my first post you'll see what I mean. I don't think it belongs on any game site.
Other games are not worthy of being on the same list as There. When I say that I am not kidding, WoW and all those other games are jokes. I truely think there is no reason games that focus on killing people should exist. I don't.

I dont know anything about "There" but Second Life is definately a quality game, that's not to say I'd pay for it, but it does have some great features to it.
For example a role playing group of "Air Pirates", they designed this huge battle ship that they can actually fly around. I also met a group of people that were coding a RPG where they could spawn monsters, and level up, and crap like that.
If anything I'd call it a true MMORPG, it's a game where the players can create the world they want to be in.
Like I said though, the quality isn't high enough for me to actually pay for it, I dont even remember how much it costs.
In There people create games too. Right now board games are popular and people have created a version of Clue. But building is a more popular thing then creating games i'd have to say. I would learn to build but it takes too much time. But there are some awsome creations in world.
Such as Heaven, Hell, Limbo, ThereOrleans, ect... I mean some pretty nice stuff. But alot of big projects in There are funded by donations because putting on a project like ThereOrleans will have a pretty big price tag on it. But that does not stop members from making There what it is today!
We have enough Fanboys on this forum, we don't need you here.

Joel you kinda get on everyones nerves with the constant There threads... may I make a suggestion? There are many MMORPGs that involve more than killing. Have you ever tried EVE? Its got great graphics, there is a HUGE amount of space to explore, there is crafting and player built stations (although not to the extent of There) and ship building. It also has one of the best communities ive had the pleasure of talking and playing with, with thousands of people on all the time chatting, trading, fighting, corp discussions etc... before you generalise you should look into the genre more. Horizons also offers and extensive amount (or from what I gather, ive never played it) of non-combat activities, but there isnt really much of a community for it.
Joel, I don't think it's the fact that everyone hates 'There', it's just that the majority of people on these boards don't find the concept interesting, and you simply need to accept that at some point.
I think it's cool that you like 'There' so much, and I hope you continue to do so. However, I think it's a bit hypocrictical to get upset when people aren't giving the game a chance, when you have an equally shallow view of the games they all play.
I know that 'There' is more than just a chat room, and you should know that the more mainsteam MMO's are more than just mindless killing, as you put it.
