No, they'll just sell it off, its what VC firms do.

I always have my doubts when a dev gives a statement full of political correct business blabbering...
However "We think the  game sucks so we won't even bother to release it" sounds refreshingly honest.

No need for tin foil hats here.

    and I quote:

“Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn’t fun. We know you have high standards when it comes to Norrath and we do too. In final review, we had to face the fact that EverQuest Next would not meet the expectations we—and all of you—have for the worlds of Norrath.”

    Landmark will live on though.

I guess one fewer AAA old style MMORPGs. Any more of those in development?
there was nothing old-style about EQ next ... more useless info .. thx for sharing

EQNext wasn't exatly an old style MMORPG.  It was trying to be so many different things, that it was quite far removed from old style games.

The roots of EQ are from old style games, but EQN was a rather drastic departure from that.

    Yes.

Imagine going to watch Jaws 5, but instead of a shark movie you get grown men street racing around in sup'd up Honda Civics. That's how far away EverQuest Next was from name and spirit.
But it was still going to be a MMORPG? I suppose i can say that no western dev is interested in a new AAA mmorpg, new OR old now.

And this jaws 5 is still an action movie. What's your point?

Well no and no and sadly no,there is no more Triple A games.

Now that most every developer has lowered their standards, nobody else is going to push the envelope either, everyone is going to lower their standards.Look at the giant Blizzard, does Hearthstone or Overwatch look like a giant billion dollar developer? Not a chance in hell.

Imo the ONLY developer left that might go big is Square Enix, they are the only one pushing the envelope while others are going low budget and blind fanbois calling it  "Artistic, stylistic" roflmao,,ok sure it is.
The problem is that even inside of Square Enix i see corner cutting in areas they never did before,so things do not look bright for the future.

Already we see the next GIMMICK to try and sell rubbish games >>>VR.They are going to attach VR to 2 bit piles of junk games to attract buyers. There is one person i know that is not going to be a sucker to cheap marketing ideas and i think you know him, pretty well ,i think i know him pretty well.i think i see him everyday. :P
Every time I read your posts I just can't disagree more with someone.

There are tons of AAA games out there and I don't have enough time to play all the awesome games out there - there are just too many and not enough time. I have enough games to last my 2 years that's without taking into account all the awesome upcoming AAA titles.

Recently we had masterpieces like fallout 4, the witcher 3.

Halo 5 blew my mind away when it comes to multiplayer. There is also tons of big blockbusters coming like uncharted, quantum break, no mans sky, mass effect, Deus ex.
And I can't wait for overwatch. That game is super fun!
And some of these games take ages to complete.

AAA mmorpgs on the other hand are dead. They just don't make enough money. Not enough people play them, they cost a lot and it seems a lot of mmorpg players are kinda stingy with their spending. They probably will scuff at paying $60 for a new game.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

So glad I didn't pay into Landmark... I would be really pissed if I had.  Now I can only muster "meh"
  • SEANMCADSEANMCAD Member EpicPosts: 16,775
I like Landmark... but without EQN, it will die very soon.
What they should do is turn Landmark into Minecraft 2. Remove the need for a MMO style server, make it like MC, and give it a real "survival" mode.
With the graphics they have, that'll be a success.
so you like a game that is heavily focused on crafting at the expense of doing other things.

awesome town, I think such games are underrated.

And here I thought you said it'd make it a "success".  That will just make it more BS that no one really wants to deal with except for a handful of people.  Survival.  If you want survival, go play a survival game.  Stop trying to inject crap into something where it should not be.

Listening to the "drivel" of the "masses" purporting to want Survival, PVP, Open World.  All these items are the 10%.  The games fail and everyone looks around shocked as to how it could happen.  If dev's stopped listening to people prattle on about it and just made things that were fun.  I really don't need to eat, crap, and sleep in a game.  I do enough of that IRL.

From what I have seen on Landmark its about as complete as Rising World, which for a crafting building game had promise but there arent any in game reasons to build 95% of the stuff. A game like Wurm is a bit of the opposite in that respect.

We knew this for months, EQ Next was never a game, just a promise.  Landmark was an huge fail, thats the reason behind all this.

I feel so bad for the talented gamers who slaved away in Landmark as uncompensated labor - thinking that at least they were contributing to something they cared about - only to get knifed in the back by this fly by night company.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Better that EQNext was canceled, than be released as the stripped down, arcade style, button mashing, casual focused game that was looking like it was going to be.

In the end, this is not much of a loss.

They do not release it because it would not be brining in enough money. If the game sucked and they would earn money with it, believe me, it would be released.

I got more than my investment worth of fun out of Landmark. I don't regret one cent.
Still sad, because EQN was really to be a next gen MMORPG.
and that is what I say about Blockscape.

Developer didnt finish the game, in fact he went an entirely different direction AND many say he 'abdonded it' and really there is nothing to do in the game other than build stuff that doesnt have a purpose but I still think I got my money out of it.

From what I've read, they couldn't develop the new technology to create the game they envisioned. That doesn't mean we won't see aspects of what they've developed in EQ:N elsewhere.

You can't blame CN, imo, for this. CN bought SoE. They could have cut all the EQN devs on day 1. However - I surmise - they were told that if the devs had "another year" and "another $X" the greatest mmo for a decade would be launched. They bought into the hype, took the gamble and it didn't pay off.

The only outstanding question is whether EQN would have been released if Sony and Storybricks had been able to agree a deal.

I do agree with you about people who may well have slaved away in Landmark hoping - downstream - to sell the assets in EQN.

I wouldn't for a second call what they had planned for EQ Next "old style." It was an old IP, thats it.

Pantheon will be old styled in some ways, with more group focus and high risk vs high reward. They're actually revealing some combat and gameplay for the first time tonight on twitch.tv/visionaryrealms.
