are people in this thread seriously thinking mobile can make the PC no longer relevant.
That is pretty funny
There is no reason it can't. Possible outcomes of this market is every home has a cpu installed that helps coordinate and run all the systems in sync. Or the items come with their own processors and do the thinking and the iphones give the directions. Give me a good reason to have a pc when I have an iphone. Other then gaming and professional applications.
... As for you comment "other then gaming and professional applications" just LOL. That is about as reasonable a restriction as saying name a good reason for owning a car other then travelling places and carrying your shopping from the store.
exactly!
not sure if its true anymore but in the 90s the number 1 reason computers existed in the home where for video games and porn.
now its likely video games, porn, movies and social media.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

What you are mentioning only about 2% of the current market uses. Why are you not understanding this? You using a computer for something that 98% of the people out there do not use and somehow you think that will keep the market going? Its more like asking people other then mud races why own a truck? Yes there's a million reasons but you are the person who wants it for a mud race and well that is a bad reason. Because users don't want it for that reason only someone like you. Gotta face reality that you are in a very small minority for the pc and well numbers sell computers not small minorities.
here is what YOU dont understand.
that '98%' of people as you say before the cell phone didnt have a computer. or if they did they barely ever used it. Mobile is just bringing more people into the digital space that OTHERWISE WOULD NOT BE THERE. while at the same time that 2% you mention is actually GROWING as well.

I'm talking about people who use computers and own them. You are in a very small minority if you are using more then one monitor. You are trying to play a game and do a business spreadsheet. That is also a very small minority. The applications you used for the pc aren't normal by any means. Which brings us back to the original thought. Why does anyone need a pc when an iphone or ipad can do exactly what 90% of pc users want.

the overwhelming majority of the mobile growth is from people who would either A. not have a PC int the home at all or B. barely know how to use one.
It doesnt require 2 28" monitor one playing a video game and the other running Excel to make your theory complete crap.
All it takes is a 19" monitor, a keyboard and a mouse to blow your theory anyway. anyone who wants or needs to do something that requires that kind of setup a fucking tablet or phone aint going to cut it.
by the way, i have a tablet I just got and its a latest gen tablet and its considered one of the better ones. it doesnt touch my 3 year old laptop with a 10 foot pole and I am returning it.
oh and by the way, getting on a site dedicated to MMORPG games and calling people nerds and telling them the PC is going to die is being fairly transparent to your motovation

Gaming PCs are not the norm. Most people that have a PC are not out buying discrete GPUs or over-clocking their CPU. It is a fringe market. Not mainstream. Mobile is mainstream. When something like a Surface Pro houses an i7 with 16 Gig of Ram and a Solid State drive running Windows it becomes far more functional to a professional photographer or videographer than a regular tablet or a phone. Like it or not mobile market makes a crap ton of money. More than PC games. This will only continue to increase. Less developed countries may not have many gaming PCs but they generally have mobile devices. You can play Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy on a mobile device. People can be Mobile gaming snobs all they want but money talks. Hearthstone is a cash cow, great classic games are available on mobile now. Mobile devices are not just for 'Candy Crush' that is naive to even say. Serious gaming will always be done on a PC or Console but Mobile gaming is no joke and is hear to stay.
what some of us are suggesting broken down is this
-The hardcore PC user is not increasing nor decreasing its static -The number of people who would normally not have a computer and barely know how to use one is what is driving the uptick in mobile.
When I was younger I knew a a good amount of people who didnt have a computer in the home at all whatsoever, I now do not know anyone without a smart phone

Point one is an obvious goes without saying statement. Point two? Prove it. This is the 21st century. Most people know how to use a computer. What drives the uptick in mobile is convenience. Phones and Tablets today are powerful. Many people have mobile and also at least a laptop. Desktops are not required for many people. I even saw a video of a guy playing WOW on his Surface pro 4 in an airport. Times have changed.
So yeah. what I am suggesting? I am suggesting that people like me are NOT going out and ditching our desktops and laptops for tablets. who is? people who would not normally have a computer in the first place. People who I have spoken to, many people. now:
1. if one is true and undisputed then what is this entire thread even about? Is the question being asked here is mobile a threat to PC? and if so then how does that work with a universal agreement that hardcore PC user base is always static? (fyi: what we are calling 'hard core PC users' is basically anyone who needs a keyboard instead of a tablet so its not exactly 'hard core')
2. I think the entire discussion is going to fall apart given item 1 however what I am saying is that over my long life I have known several people who never had a PC in the home. zero interest in PC and even somewhat terrified of it. From what I have seen the people I know now who are most PC adverse have and use phones. can I proove it? no but its very obvious to me.
I bought a $400 tablet and got it last night. It took me about 4 hours to decide that its not worth it and I am returning it. my 'laptop needs' are far from hardcore and yet a Chromebook is very clearly the better option.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
To be honest, it looks like another variation of Game of War:Fire Age, except with cutscene visuals for combat resolution that you can only watch and not actually give commands to individual units as you would in most other RTS games. Yes they tend to look good, but they also tend to be heavily P2W. Honestly, not really impressed at all.

Honestly I'd say you're wrong on both counts.
Don't forget.. Social gaming also accounts for PC gaming -- and social gaming has been decreasing as mobile games have increased and more people can play the same games on mobile as they can on their social media pages - with similar integration.
The hardcore PC user is actually decreasing.. that is kind of the point of the article. There is a decline overall. Will that change in the future? Probably... it could continue to slide as more platforms come into play or mobile technology gets better.
The uptick in mobile is more than just people who don't have a computer or know how to use one. There are many instances in my personal life where friends of mine that game heavily have transitioned to mobile platforms like tablets for most of their gameplaying.
The thing here is, there is an overlap in the mobile market where there isn't on the PC or Console market.
One might play on PC.. one might play on Console... One might play on mobile. You're far more likely to see PC or Console players play on mobile than you are a Mobile only gamer move to PC.. or a PC player move to Console. (yes there are those of us that do all 3, obviously but we're probably a minority here)

when I have time I will read the article but can you point to me a quote where the article is explicitly stating that the PC hardcore user base is declining.
Also..for the record I think Mobile will take the PC as the 'king' meaning 'more devices. but mobile will not change server rooms, office spaces (at least not much), Home PC gamers or dedicated PC users and all of those factors will remain static.
Mobile brings to the table something the non-PC person can enjoy it adds NOTHING for those who enjoy PC already. Which by the way is why I am returning my tablet after only 4 hours of use

Nowhere will it state that the PC hardcore user base is declining because there is no such thing as a "PC Hardcore User Base"
When you look at revenue for PC.. you aren't counting only the LoL players or the CS: Go players... you're counting the guy who bought Freecell Quest or Friday Night Poker or logged in and spent money on Candy Crush on Facebook.
Overall the industry based on revenue will increase across the board.. BUT the percentages of market share are decreasing. More money will be made on PC than the previous year.... but PC revenue percentage as a market whole will decrease by 3% from 2015, while Mobile will increase.
