Just walk into any restaurant during off hours and see what the staff is doing. I should not have to explain what the extrapolation of that observation is.

... The report shows that, at least in the US, yes 56% are playing on a PC but 48% are playing social games, so Facebook and the like. Hardly a cry to the hardcore gamer. ...
Statistics can be tricky.
"44% are NOT playing on a PC, also 48% are playing social games..."
PC is undeniable the best, but gaming companies are not looking to produce games for the best, they are looking to produce games which make the most money. That's why consoles exist, that's why mobile gaming took off and that's why gaming is making games well below the standard the could make.
Gaming "consumers" which is a good way of seeing players through their eyes, come in two types, those who think of themselves as players and those who just use their mobile to play games sometimes. The later have exploded and will continue to do so, the result of this PC and console will got what they are given and shut up, you are not the driving force anymore.
This happened to PC's when consoles became the leading money spinner, what goes around comes around as they say.
Mobile gaming is a long ways off from offering the same experiences on a PC. Can it offer some? Yes. But it's a ways off from offering the "Same" experience. I would rather sit at my PC and play games where I can maximize performance, gameplay, graphics, experience, "fill in", Etc over a phone/tablet any day.
Mobile gaming is great for those which cannot afford a gaming pc, children, teens, the elderly, and casuals.
So Smart Phone and WIreless Device would account for 67%
...
You're reading that part wrong, it doesn't refer to exclusive use, it's inclusive. Players inevitably will use multiple devices.
"Top devices most frequent gamers use:
PC (56%), dedicated game console (53%), smartphone (36%),
wireless device (31%), dedicated handheld system (17%)"
Some of the PC users will be also game on smartphones, etc., but PC use is by far the most popular amongst US gamers according to the report.
But see therein lies the issue -- and why my original post still makes sense. What you're depicting is "frequent gamers" not the market as a whole.
So while "frequent gamers" might mean.. people that game more than .. lets say.. 10 hours a week.. well then people like me wouldn't be considered a "frequent" gamer, despite me buying more gamers per year than I ever play. The point is.. there is a lot of information we aren't getting here.
On a side note this doesn't change the fact that "wireless" and "smartphone" still make up more of a percentage... despite using multiple devices and regardless of overlap - as we have zero true information on "mobile" gaming at all really by looking at that information.. That also doesn't include any growth trends or real financial data -- nor does it break into which pieces actually were overlapping - if at all.
All it says is "top devices most frequent gamers use". And doesn't take into account the "mobile" market as a whole... only basing smartphones and tablets as separate platforms.
"t shows that gamers worldwide will generate a total of $99.6 billion in revenues in 2016, up 8.5% compared to 2015. For the first time, mobile gaming will take a larger share than PC with $36.9 billion, up 21.3% globally. APAC continues to dominate worldwide, accounting for 47% of the market. China alone accounts for one quarter of all global game revenues. Newzoo expects the global market to grow with a CAGR of +6.6% toward 2019, eventually reaching $118.6 billion with mobile gaming at $52.5 billion."
Which doesn't match exactly the original post but is much closer in line with what the trend appears to be.
They also explain further below that they base their numbers off of a 4 screen system, differentiating tablets and smartphones -- which is silly due to them being largely THE SAME MARKET. Market share coupled together well outpaces any other market - Tablets and Smartphones.
By 2018 they say (event without counting tablets) that Smartphones will be the largest market. Again, this is in line with the original post.

Basically what is in the article + what we do not know means this title for the OP is god awful
'Mobile Gaming is King, and Consoles retake lead from PC'
No, the title stands firm actually, based on every other report as a market whole.
based on it not be true or relevant for 'dedicated gamers' and that 'non-dedicated gamers' is undefined and can mean anything from barely knowing what a game is all the way to 'dedicated'
I see
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
and by the way that article seems to suggest that some of us will stop playing our PC games so that we can play a mobile game instead because its more interesting.
wat?

I know you have a bad habit of not reading through the links posted, so, generally I'll just assume you saw the response from SpottyGekko with his data from Newzoo -- but the data I posted afterwards regarding the exact same data was also from Newzoo and their same findings showed despite "frequent" gamer "trends" smartphone and tablet revenue together far outpaced PC.
Nothing was deemed "dedicated" -- what spotty gekko posted was based on being a "frequent" gamer.
Terminology here is key.
The same report also mentions that VR isn't even considered a platform, and won't be considered such - instead being pushed into one of every other category.
Newzoo breaks up their report from what the market looked like in 2012 -- they explain it all in the report.

The war is already over, consoles are the most important platforms. This is why all multi-plat games are now created for consoles and then ported to pc.

yeah I have heard that but what I have a hard time resolving is this
40-50 million PS4 which are either being used or not used, broken or in a pawn shop. basically 100% of all of them
Steam 'active accounts' 125 million and that is just steam.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
thus a huge difference between 'dedicated' and 'frequent' in this context? nope not at all
+
Us PC gamers are dropping our PC games and picking up smart phones to play games because those games are more compelling?
really?
All of those are undefined which makes SpottyGekkos information unusable in most cases, and why what I posted afterwards cleared it up a bit and was in line with the original link posted.
As for mobile games being more "compelling". I don't believe that anymore than you do. But the reality of the situation is -- if I HAD to choose a platform to play a game on, both PC and Console would be well before Mobile -- yet in real world functionality, I find myself having more time for mobile games.
April was the first month ever I "bought" more mobile games than PC games. (I had google play credits, so I didn't really spend money). One of the games was Scribblenauts which I bought for my GFs kids and the other was RISK -- the old board game, because I had some friends that wanted to play it.
Hardly compelling games but... they're easily accessible.
thus a huge difference between 'dedicated' and 'frequent' in this context? nope not at all

All of those are undefined which makes ...the OP of this thread correct because it doesn't use them.
I fixed it for you
Other interesting conculsions i have seen studies come to.
'People who game game because they have no control over their social status which is usually low'
'video games make people violent'
You're arguing results of a link that isn't the OP so that pretty much just means you don't understand the links posted. It couldn't be more clear.
These are current and predicted numbers.. not generalizations... spottygekko posted the erroneous "frequent gamers" topic.. you're really just invalidating his data, which... is the only data that he took concluded to PC gaming still being largely relevant.
It has nothing to do with the original link.. or the link that I posted after BY THE SAME PEOPLE GEKKO USED that reaffirms this without any confusing language.

... Actually the data that "put the OP in question" was ridiculed and proven wrong.... by you.
Not to mention my follow up using the same companies data that reaffirmed the OP... it didn't detract from it.
So basically you're arguing with yourself right now lol data that was "contrary" to the OP used the words "frequent gamers" which you agreed was confusing and should be considered unusable.

1. doesnt matter if I made fun of it or not. Are you saying though that I prooved the article wrong? me suggesting the article is wrong is very different then me prooving it.

which suggests that Steam sales in the last 12 months fell from c. $158M to $128M. Is this a decline in PC sales or an increase in PC sales with a larger decline in mobile? Or vice versa? Or a decline in both?
And as far as tablet sales declining that is no surprise. Tablets have now achieved (near) saturation status. The initial - blisteringly fast - surge has been replaced by a "typical" saturated consumer product sales chart.

Not my future. I'll figure out a way to go back to table top gaming before I play games on a phone... even one that connects to a larger display.
Fast food restaurants sell more food than any other type of restaurant, but I don't go to fast food restaurants when I want really good food.

Doesn't that look a bit more acceptable ?
