The village I am Blackmith in is concerned that there is an 'Outlaw' terrorising the locals. The local Sherrif is called who contacts the local Barron who sends the garrison down to the village to hunt the Outlaws. The local garrison and Barron notify the Count who also sends his garrison to route out the outlaws and drive them from the lands. Hearing this the King sends a portion of the army to assist in keeping the kings lands free of anyone that would deny him his lawful dues in taxes that, because the outlaw attacked the local blacksmith meant that the trade wagons could not be repaired, the local market had no produce to sell, meaning that the food that was destined for the kings grand banquet didn't arrive and he got pissed.
If that doesn't happen then I will find a King that can protect his citizens...
Problem solved. Let the royalty send in the troops.
That sort of happened in Life is feudal at the beginning when a few people actually pl;ayed it, you had guys RPing as knights or enforcers or whatever, bu eventually it just grew old, and they lost skills and were degraded for killing guys because that guy wasnt found until after the 'criminal' timer had worn off. So he ganked and stole with no real fear and then when they decided to punish him for his crimes they lost as much (more if they killed him outright) than he did.
Now I keep hearing all these rules and rule sets this game is going to implement, well we have all heard that before, that was also one of the things LiF sold as well, but reading them and implementing them and experiencing how they actually play out are all totally different things.
Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone and understand the "other point of view" before arriving at a mutual understanding. It's called having consideration for others. The fact that your solution is "hard and has never been accomplished" should be telling enough.
Maybe its time we tried something different.
Go checkout Pantheon.. its going to be a PVE-only sandbox.
As far as trying to change this game, I think that you should step out of your comfort zone and understand the other point of view.
Many people want the risk vs reward feel that comes from open world PVP.. people want a sense of danger and having to work with others to avoid it or put up a fight. The interaction that comes from this in the long run is a story that cannot be found in PVE, a story that comes from interacting with other players provided a more original and unique experience.
I've tried to explain that there are many ways to avoid PVP in sandbox games.
You seem to be confused with a type of PVP and griefing.. in the end what we want is something to keep us busy aside from depending on an indie company for more content..
You are right in that developers favor those who enjoy PVP more than those who enjoy PVE because they keep on playing the game after they have experienced all that PVE has to offer. A PVE player will usually quit when the content runs out. A PVP player doesn't run out of content unless he runs out of people. What you are suggesting means that there would not be people from the very beginning.. so no, being 'flagged' for PVP doesn't work for most PVPers.
The game launch comes once. Let's get most out of the game.. not just race until the end of PVE and then quit. We can live in this world together and accept that there may be consequences for our actions.

In most games Death means literally only a delay anyway unless you get all worked up and have an emotional reaction. In CoE death has some teeth at some point, but in most games Killers are simply doing the most favored and available tasks, there is nothing intrinsically glorious about it.
That's what death means in most themeparks.
In EVE, it means your ship blows up and you don't get it back, or any of the weapons or upgrades you put on it. It might also mean you get podded and have to pay for your clone. For upper-level player, death can cost hundreds of millions of ISK.
In Darkfall, it means you lose everything you had on you; all your weapons, armor, gold, reagents, potions, food -- everything. Losing a siege bag in that game meant losing a good few hours of work killing mobs for money in the high-level mob areas; if you did not risk farming the high-level mob areas, then losing a siege bag was like losing a years salary in effort and time.
In CoE, it will mean lost game time on top of lost items.
As for the "pvpers get all the attention" -- yeah, they get all the attention of OTHER PVPERS. PVE'ers like you obviously don't care. Guilds of crafters won't care. Explorers won't care.
When Mountainview Valley is found by Explorer Bob, everyone who is an explorer will know the name Explorer Bob. Pvper Dan won't care, but thats because its not his thing.

Agree.
Worst i know is PvE players trying their best to change a promising PvP game into something else that fit their playstyle. There is like 100 games that fit their playstyle and if it is 1 game that might be interesting for the hardcore PvP players then you can be assure the PvE crowd do their best to destroy the game.
Split the community into felucca and trammel. A hardcore PvP version and a PvE mirror world. Will make everyone happy.
It's a PvP game people! Get over it. There will be ganking and griefing and people trying to burn the world down. The anti-griefiing systems will break, there will be tears.
If, like me, you are a PvE player don't put any money into it, certainly don't play it and don't argue with the fanbois about whether or not PvP is a good thing.
Then, if the game comes out, you can watch it flop as they devour each other.
CoE is aiming to be a MEOW and not a MMORPG, exactly as it was also planned for another game called Revival. MEOW stands for Multiplayer Evolving Online World. People discussed all the different nuances and repercussions related to PvP in a MEOW for a whole year on Revival forum.
This is what lead developers of Revival had to say on the topic.
PvP will come in many different forms. People will use the disguise system to frame other people, kill messengers, sabotage contracts between players, spread false rumours or misinformation to damage other people's reputation. Robbers will attack caravans, ships and warehouses of other people. Vandals and burglars will break into people's houses and other property to steal things or cause damage. Others will kill or steal people's pets, mounts or farm animals.
All of this is inherent to the concept of MEOW. Having restricted PvP in such a game is problematic because otherwise there will be no chance of retribution against all the people engaging in misinformation, sabotage, burglary, vandalism, piracy, and other forms of PvP.
Unlike yourself who's only concern is one of self, I would like to see an improvement to the fail status quo of non-consensual OWPvP mechanics in MMORPGs so that they become inclusive of the entire gaming demographic as opposed to exclusive as it currently stands. Only then will we see the growth of the MMORPG beyond the stagnant status in which they find themselves in today. My suggestions on this thread speak of compromise. I don't want MMORPGs to be rid of PvP, I want MMORPGs to improve PvP game play with the implementation of fair and competitive OWPvP for all players.
Currently, there is nothing fair, or competitive, about PvP in non-consensual OWPvP MMORPGs. One need only glance at the dozens, if not hundreds, of forum boards of games featuring both PvE and PvP in OWPvP games to see that there is a problem with this game play model. Where there is smoke there is fire, and sticking one's head under the ground pretending that nothing is wrong with the genre is not going to extinguish that fire.
You can continue to be selfish and witness the gradual decline and demise of the MMORPG genre, or begin acting with consideration and contribute to the growth of the genre by welcoming players of all genres into the fold and encouraging PvP game play that is fair, competitive, and inclusive as opposed to discouraging it by supporting the rude, toxic, obnoxious, and alienating game play that has, to date, ultimately only succeeded in ruining games and driving large masses of their player bases away.

That sounds like something we used to talk about in these forums years back... the posts were originally about how to allow open PVP and still attract PVE players. Its cool that people are actually considering doing this!
Sounds like they are coming up with ways that make being a good guy very fun and rewarding! The reputation of players would matter.. and becoming a bounty hunter or law man would be so fun!

Not a very good example given the current DOA status of Revival lol ... He said it better than we ever could ... with a huge exclamation mark tacked on top of it.

I tend to agree, I hate to always tote the same line, but SWG is where I think they got this balance right. Temporary enemy flags as well as combatant and non combatant status...along with Group TEFs, Faction TEFs, TEF due to faction based PVE. Etc... These systems simulated neutrality as well as warfare. It makes sense in a virtual world, not all are going to be a combatant, that status should be tied to your factional/Guild ties IMO.

Different forum posts and dev journals posted by CoE devs since last summer reveal a similar approach to the creation of a living breathing virtual world and how different forms of "PvP" (ranging from misinformation and reputation damage to sabotage, theft and murder) are part of the whole concept.
For example, when the disguise system was revealed, it was also explained how the system can be used to damage the reputation of some other player character by assuming his or her identity. When they talked about housing, there was also some text about its PvP dimension. Dev texts about finite resources also implied how people will be able to capture resources from other people or from their caravans, ships and warehouses.
The bottomline is that there will be different forms of PvP and they will range from mild to strong. People considering limited PvP in such environment and game concept should consider the following dilemma. Someone impersonates your player character or breaks into your house and steals your stuff, or does something else annoying, semi-harmful but non-lethal to you. Should you be able to react with full freedom (and possibly kill the character who stole something from your house or impersonated your character) or should you be restricted only to the same "milder" level of PvP that the other player did to you? Or should the game limit PvP severely and leave such cases in the hands of NPC town guards?
It's a tricky dilemma and it caused a very heated year-long discussion in the Revival community too.

I have no idea why a more hardcore server would need the PvE players that want to introduce restrictions towards the hardcore PvP rulesettings? If the PvP players like in for example SOTA wanted full loot and open PvP why should the PvP players have to leave that game cause the PvE crowd didn't like it? That is what happens to all games that try to cater for both playstyles on the same game world. It always happens.
In all hardcore PvP games i played PvP players are PvE players same time. They are crafter's and treasure hunters, it is just that these PvE players accept and enjoy the harder rule settings. They want just that, risk vs reward for the in game thrill.
Let the PvP players dictate the rule setting for their version of the game and same for the PvE players. There have never come anything good from trying to mix them together in the same game world.
EVE (and The Repopulation before it flopped for unrelated reasons) have / had a great idea I think the pure PVE crowd would support, and thats tiered safety. In 1.0 sec, you are virtually completely safe, but the resources and rewards to be had in the immediate area are low quality and bare.
As you get farther out, the resources and money to be made becomes better, but the safety you are given declines, until 0.0 where it is completely lawless and there is no safety except what you bring.
CoE has a form of this without anyone realizing it, but its less guaranteed safety than EVE. If you stay within capital cities, the likelihood of someone running up and stabbing you will be nill. If you play at the edge of the world, you run a much higher risk of just getting ganked.
The developers want to make a sandbox game with localized banking, contracts, politics, trading routes, punishment, etc. and its clear that they want you to have player freedom and a unique experience.
They need forced PVP! That's the whole point of having localized banking and punishment!!
It seems like it would be easy to come up with ways to make it fun to be a good guy... escorting a caravan.. bounty hunting.. etc. It would also be fun to risk being a bad guy and rob a caravan or kill someone but they run the risk of being imprisoned or whatever.
They also talk of there being a king... how will they determine who becomes King? The person who does the best at preventing crime and punishing criminals and sees that the caravans arrive to destinations? Where are they taking this?
The appeal to this game is not dungeons, mobs, and loot as much as it is the interaction with other players, just look into it more and it might make more sense to you why open world PVP would be needed.
Just look at their logo... its a contract stamp!
Face it, we need bad guys to beat, and it needs to be a real challenge to be king, but how?? Surely, not PVE!
Stop being so close-minded.. the game is very early in development... their funds are very limited.

Allowing an "opt out" to PvP is not the solution to making PvE and PvP co-exist. The solution is making serious and meaningful ramifications for behaving in an anti-social/murderous manner.
I suppose that's what CoE is attempting to accomplish with the implementation of OWPvP in their game. And while I applaud them for their effort, that is easier said than done.
First of all will be the booming complaints by the PvP-centric demographic that these "serious and meaningful ramifications"are so severe that PvP never happens. I mean, according to this demographic, it is an OWPVP game after all. Why make a PvP game when PvP never happens?
... And if these "severe and meaninful ramifications" are not "severe" enough, then you will hear it from the PvE-centric demographic.
... and then there is that all-mighty "wild card" that no matter how "severe and meaningful" those ramifications are, there will always be those players with those "throw away" red characters that they will release upon the populace to satisfy their "anti-social/murderous" urges.
As sure as water is wet and fire is hot, you know one or all of the above will happen. Thats why one just gives the players the option and encourages the activity by making the activity appealing enough with the lure of the juicy hanging fruit, and simply sit back and watch the players go after it. Don't push it, dont force it, just let it happen naturally.
It's human nature.
Yes it's hard and yes it's never been accomplished but making PvP optional is a worse solution IMHO. It's been tried many times and I always hated it. The only one that I didn't hate was DAoC but that is an RvR game and not a FFA Open World game. At lease in DAoC when you saw an enemy you knew it was an enemy and not "Hey let me check his flag" or "Hey this guy killed me yesterday but now he's dancing around me and I can't do anything because he's turned PvP off".
There are plenty of games that let you do that already. Not my cup of tea.
Inconveniencing players by forcing them to play your way just because its not your cup of tea is what lies at the opposite end of that spectrum. Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone and understand the "other point of view" before arriving at a mutual understanding. It's called having consideration for others. The fact that your solution is "hard and has never been accomplished" should be telling enough.
This "give and take" thing is something that the non-consensual OWPvP-centric crowd has never been good at. That demographic is all about "taking,' and never "giving." While the PvE demographic is often times conciliatory by suggesting "optional flagging" or separate "PvE servers," the OWPvP crowd will have none of it. They want it all. According to them its everyone on a mega-server and forced non-consensual PvP 24/7 or nothing at all. The words "mutual consideration" means nothing to this demographic.
Maybe its time we tried something different.
No... it's been tried ad nauseum. There are FAR more games that have flagging than those that have FFA Open World PvP. The problem is that not every game is for every player. Trying to make it all appealing to all players is what makes it suck for all. There should be PvE only games, PvP optional games and PvP FFA games.

Sorry but this is utterly wrong.
The number of FFA PvP games can be counted on one hand. To complain that these few games are causing the gradual decline and demise of the MMORPG genre is a ridiculous statement to make. The slow demise is caused by developers trying to appeal to EVERYONE and thus satisfying NO ONE.

Nah buddy, you're wrong. It's way more than just a "few games" causing that gradual decline. Only the PvP-centric with a self-serving bias, or the ignorant who don't know any better, would dispute the obvious increasing trend of OWPvP games that have been flooding the market in the past few years. Don't make me have to post the long list of these already released, and waiting to be released, OWPvP games thereby making you look silly. There are a slew of them and their numbers far outnumber any pure PvE-centric games that have been released during that same time period. I have to think long and hard to even come up with one. The MMORPG genre is hardly recognizable from that of which it was conceived. You fancy yourself a gamer. You should know better.

Have you read about their content and goals? Why would any of that stuff appeal to the PVE community? Its all about PVP interactions it seems like.
Have you seen their combat gameplay? They have to make things PVP to make it more interesting. You want to be engaged with mobs with that swordplay and parrying? Only another player is going to keep you are your toes.
As far as Indie developers go, it seems like PVP sandbox does the best... what else was there?? Rysom? Darkfall has more than enough people and is still going today. It was one of the most talked about and popular game on these forums for years. PVP does sell and there is a market for it and a great way to make up for not having enough PVE content. I bet that you think that Darkfall failed... its been going for 8 years.
There are many people interested in open PVP games but mostly they just want there to be consequences for being a griefer.. this game has clearly offered some. Its not full loot so what is all this fuss about?
Why do you think sandboxes keep coming out with open PVP? They are not stupid. There is a market for it and more importantly the market would be more willing to stay, without having to come up with more PVE content.

Again, you are mistaken and unwittingly make my point. YES there should be pure PvE games! That is the problem. There are too many games that try what you suggest and make them appeal to EVERYONE. Obviously it is failing. Your argument should NOT be to inject your (IMHO silly) flagging into one of the few pure FFA Open World PvP game but rather it should be to ask for more pure PvE games. Trying to belittle those that disagree with you by calling them ignorant, self-serving,etc... is just making YOU look silly.

There's the one thing that you've said in this whole thread that I wholeheartedly agree with. I am, indeed, making myself look silly lowering my standards and debating this subject with what are, apparently, two of the most blind PvP-centric posters that I've seen on this forum in a long time. On the one hand we have one of them believing that the reason developers keep releasing these non-consensual OWPvP games is due to their popularity, when their track history of failure is unmistakable and obvious for all to see, and on the other hand we have the other who when proven wrong regarding his denial of there being more than just a few games with this non-consensual OWPvP game play model being released of late, causing the gradual decline and demise of the MMORPG genre, resorts to writing incoherent straw man arguments about how I am the one who is mistaken and unwittingly making his point. I suppose I am just a glutton for punishment for going back and forth with these types but I do find their responses entertaining.

Wayyyy more than 2 people have responded to you.. unfortunately the staff erased like a page of posts when you challenged me to play FPS with the big boys or whatever LOL
What sandbox games have you played?
In one of my other posts that was deleted I said something that I should mention again because its important and that is the adrenaline rush you can get from open PVP in a sandbox.. if there is risk vs reward and you are caught unexpectedly, it can be quite the rush as you try and stay standing. FPS cannot do this for you, only PVP games. It makes PVE much more interesting for that reason.
The ones that I have played would have been so lame without the PVP. There just simply is not enough content when its some small indie company involved.
You seem to totally be trolling.. have you even read the description for this game? How could you be serious?? I'm starting to think that you have to be joking. Nothing about this games description is about PVE besides crafting.
If they are going to have localized banking than it makes sense to allow robbers a chance at the loot, but also this game has a system of contracts already built in for escorting it or maybe even tracking down thieves.. theres so many places they could take it.

Nice try. There was no "Wayyy more than 2 people" and no amount of reference to an imagined "invisible army" of PvP supporters can validate any of your nonsensical responses. There was one poster who came to your defense when I challenged you to that PvP match and the reason he did so was, no doubt, because he felt sorry for you. By the way, you'd do well to refrain from referencing deleted posts by mods. There is a reason they decided to mod your rant of a post response after all.

why are you interested in this game?

I've repeatedly answered the context of those questions throughout my posts in this entire thread you just haven't been capable of comprehending those posts. I've played many sandbox games. Their titles are irrelevant. My cause for advocating against non-consensual OWPvP goes beyond this game's game play model. Whereas I am speaking in an unselfish manner for the good of the genre as a whole, you seem to be stuck in this vacuum borne out of selfish interests. The answers to your questions are documented in detail in many of my prior posts. There is no reason to repeat them. Scroll back, slow down, and read them again. Doing so will bring you a better understanding of where I stand on this matter.

Now I keep hearing all these rules and rule sets this game is going to implement, well we have all heard that before, that was also one of the things LiF sold as well, but reading them and implementing them and experiencing how they actually play out are all totally different things.

Fame comes in many flavors in CoE.
If, like me, you are a PvE player don't put any money into it, certainly don't play it and don't argue with the fanbois about whether or not PvP is a good thing.
Then, if the game comes out, you can watch it flop as they devour each other.

Sounds like they are coming up with ways that make being a good guy very fun and rewarding! The reputation of players would matter.. and becoming a bounty hunter or law man would be so fun!

Talk about irony.
Not a very good example given the current DOA status of Revival lol ... He said it better than we ever could ... with a huge exclamation mark tacked on top of it.
Then again, I doubt anyone is surprised. Isn't this the way they all end.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson

Nah buddy, you're wrong. It's way more than just a "few games" causing that gradual decline.
