I'm strongly considering it as well. I haven't played a mmorpg in over a year now and wasn't actively looking for one anymore either, but BDO cut my attention the other day. I am a sucker for atmosphere... weather systems in games, day/night cycles, worlds... and with that in mind BDO looks pretty cool. I also love end game PvP. I suck at it, but i have always loved it. DAoC was pretty non-stop fun for me for 4+ years. Will probably pick up BDO this weekend or next week... going to read and watch a little more first.
BDO's great when it comes to atmosphere! I still stop every now and then to admire some beautiful vista. xD

Yeah the atmosphere is superb. No fast travel also helps because you experience day/night cycles and atmosphere changes you wouldn't normally with the teleporting found in most games. Great music too.
If you enjoy vistas, try climbing on the highest tower in Calpheon. Yet, you can get all the way up. I regularly do similar useless, silly things just for the sake of exploration and to see what's up there.
...or the one in Epheria. I actually enjoyed that climb more since it has a couple of tricky "leap of faith" jumps to get to the top. And the view is phenomenal.

I have thought the same as the OP since game launch. It's not perfect as a game, and on balance Daum are not helping even allowing for the fact they (like all publishers) are profit driven. But, that said, it has many things going for it and it is simply the best MMO out there now (until you get burnt out ). The 'world' is just light years ahead of any other MMO. The life skill portion of PVE is light years ahead of anything else since Vanguard went down. Lots of good things going for it.
I do wish PVP'ers would stop trying to claim the game tho, it's bad for the game's future. It's a PVX game.

Thanks. It's way faster than the one I was using for sure.
As for vistas, well, my comp kind of sucks. I actually feel pretty lucky I can get 30 fps on medium.
I should be getting a new job pretty soon, and the game is good motivation to upgrade my computer.
Until then I'm pretty happy I'm able to experience the weather effects and day/night cycles.
Stuff like the morning fog in this game is ludicrously immersive.

You can always max out the settings once on the top of a tower to get a nice view, even if the framerates drop
Heh that's true. I'm pretty engrossed in learning all the stuff to learn right now, but I can definitely see how chilling on a tower with a great view would be relaxing.

This is what will probably doom the game, or at least hurt it a lot. With the amazing PvE, crafting and world, I don't understand why Daum wants to force everyone into forced PvP. All the sieges and other territory control mechanics could work perfectly in a "flag" system, like they do in Anarchy Online for ages now.
I could understand if Daum simply kept the Korean PvP rules and said there was nothing they could do about it but the idea that they gave the PvEers a big f-you and nerfed the penalty for killing other players into the ground just to more fully cater to the tiny Darkfall community kinda blows my mind.

PVP community was very vocal before the game was released. They're the reason we don't have a megaserver.
After the game was released, the PVE community became much more vocal. They're the reason we don't have +16 yet.
Daum clearly listens to the most vocal part of the community. There's still a chance they'll revert the 45 change to appease PVErs, or something else along those lines.
My personal opinion is that the game is ultimately a PVP game. All new content being developed is being developed with PVP in mind.
The very large PVE community seems like a surprise to Daum and PA. I imagine they're trying to figure out the best way to keep them interested. Currently it seems like the plan is to slowly ease them into PVP.
I know of many better ones. That said it s all opinion, you might hate what I like, but to claim it s the best anything can be argued till the cows come home.
You just completely contradicted your own post. In his opinion it is the best MMO out right now...or did he have to say that? No one said it was literally THE best MMO out right now as a matter of fact, 99.9% of the time when someone says such a thing it should be assumed to be their opinion. We should not need to post a disclaimer for people like you every time we post we like something.

Please do explain how "PVE community" is affected by +16 gear and how they are the reason for not having them in NA/EU version yet...
Also, official source is welcomed.
I'd say it's more along the lines of "casual" players over "hardcore" players on that one, not the pve'ers. The majority of players in the game still don't have full +15, then there are the ones who play more often and are fully geared. The +16 through +20 upgrades have large power discrepancies that Daum says they hope to tone down before NA/EU patch. Which has been talked about, and even voted on quite a few times by the community on the official forums. Feel free to google.
Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying BDO now @holdenhamlet I definitely agree there isn't much I'd rather play, that I haven't already moved on from, for one reason or another. There are some future titles that I'm interested in though, but those are far from finished currently.
Main issue right now for me is performance. I'm going to finally have to deal with my i3 3.0ghz processor I've had for a long time. I picked up an SSD and it helps a bit but it's clear my CPU is bottlenecking everything.
Game plays basically the same at medium or very high (30 fps when I'm in the field, nightmare fps in cities).
Good news is I got a new job so I'll be able to upgrade the CPU in a few weeks.
Just to add here, that I do feel that BDO sells itself a little short as to what is available in the game world and just how much content you really get. I think they need to do a better job providing information on how the game works and just how big the world is.
I would tend to agree with this, in fact if they offered a strat guide/handbook in their packages for a little extra $, even I'd be tempted to reconsider passing on it although I spent most of my trial tabbing back out of combat when trying to see wtf I was going.
I think this is a very good example of what is going on with BDO in general. Even when I first tried to play the game I sort of lucked out because I had a great guild help answer my questions. I will say that once I got to 15 and had them help me a long the way the game itself opened up. It took a little bit of patience but after the learning curve was defeated I understood why this was such a love/hate game. I honestly think most people would want to play this if they understood exactly what the game offered. The problem is there is very steep learning curve in understanding how all the systems and structures connect in BDO. I will lend out a helping hand to anyone that has any questions about the game. The guild I joined helped me understand the game quite well and we will extend that olive branch to anyone that is willing to be patient with the game. We are on Edan, Balenos 2 [Divine Knights].
*Just to clarify I would not worry about the activity requirement in the thread. To give a basic understanding of the way activity works in BDO. You sign a contract with the guild and they PAY you silver every day to be active. This in turn gives the guild the ability to purchase abilities (sort of like talents) that enhance everyone in the guild. The talent tree is rather diverse and extensive in what it offers. If your contract ends or does not get renewed (They are offered over periods of time) you will remain in the guild but will not get paid. You can talk to the guild for getting a new contract or even getting a raise if you contribute via being active. I understand this is kind of confusing at first, but its a very nice system in place where guilds actually PAY YOU to be active.

Seems pretty cool. I'll check it out. I rolled on Edan and I'm playing a lot so any activity requirement is no problem.
This is the first mmo to consistently hold my attention for 2 straights months (and counting) in a long time, and I see no end in sight to my enthusiasm. I play everyday. Sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for several hours. There is always something to do, the choices are myriad.
If you allow yourself to, you can have a lot of fun.
