I should watch GTA V just to see what its all about. But yea LOL has more people playing it right now then all mmo's combined. They will have 67 million players a month. CS and DOTA are harder to read but they do have a crap ton of players as well.
Keep in mind Brazil and many other 3rd world countries play MOBA's because they can't afford that $15 sub or B2P models and far less some decent spec PC or a fast internet connection.
CS:GO is where the FPS audience is located with a cheap access of $9.99 one time fee. Hearthstone is the last "card" Blizzard has to hold toward any market they have left dominating before they are gone for good.
The MOBA market been thriving mainly because it was a new, innovative genre. Once the masses realize how shallow that repetitive game play is while also depending on certain individuals to compete, they will abandon those and hop on the MMO bandwagon. I too enjoyed heavily FPS and RTS games in early 2000.
At the end numbers mean nothing if you know which countries are these games most popular in. For a long time Blizzard bragged with 12 mil WOW subs, when it was actually 3-4 mil from NA/Euro and Australia, rest were of course China.
those top 5 says a ton about the people of this world playing THOSE games. It is like a level of doucheness from the top down of varying attitude and misserable lot that can not control their anger when things don't go their way. Oh such glorious gene pools in that lot for sure.
It's more like if you enjoyed making hero units in warcraft 3 and sending them on missions 4 or so deep..against a bunch of...minions... Am I explaining dota right? Because that's how i remember it..way back 13 or so years ago..
The genre isn't new. It's actually about as old as the modern mmorpg.
I'd say a very large chunk of mmo players ended up just pvping for hours and hours in their game of choice. They then get burnt out of the ever tiring grind to the top to dress like the other Assassin and the...other Assassin in the pvpwarzonebattlefrontwhoknowsVwVw.
Screw it. Just play a predetermined character that really will just end up being cooler looking than what those pauldrons of asskickery +3 made your char.
Moba's are fun because they are quick combat in various camera angles. From FPS to TPS...To the typical isometric view.
Facts are Moba's are just doing what mmo's did in a very condensed quick form fashion.
Though I can see why many are snooty towards these games. It takes alot of ....fortitude to deal with the general gaming communities of these games. Not to mention the ability to lose 5 games in a row due to what appears to be a standardized terribad matchmaking system.
People don't just go into watch streamers some might depends what you
are using it for some people chat, some people look for give aways,
some come in looking for help, i mainly use it looking for info about a
game but i only go in rooms with less than 50 people the least people the
better it's easier to talk and get the streamers attention then.
I noticed World of Warcraft didn't feature last year.
I don't play MOBA's because they are barely even considered a game since it focuses so much on people stroking their epeen. I will never play computer games competitively because I play them to have fun. MOBA's are more like RTS style games than anything else except with some RPG elements instead of base / army building.
I'm pretty sure all games are ego strokes for all gamer kind.
We all have ego's. Unless you enjoy losing and being made a proverbial bitch by a AI or another player. In which case 50 shades of gray to you sir.
The only difference between Overwatch and moba's is the fps view. Smite/Overwatch almost same game just different champions and play modes. So if you can enjoy Overwatch then you can easily enjoy any moba so long as you don't need first person view. The only difference is you can't buy gear and level up in overwatch. Moba's are shallow enough for people to jump in and enjoy without knowing anything. And deep enough for thousands of hours and still have stuff to learn.
Maybe it's just me, but if I'm in a position to watch someone play a game, then I'm in a position to play that game, and I'd rather be playing. I will never understand the appeal of watching random Twitch games.
Probably the same reason that the only sports-ball-goal-basket game that I watch every year is the Superbowl and only because it's more of a national holiday event in my country, which is fun for the socialization aspect.
The long play session PvE MMORPG games are not even a blip on this chart
The thing is forums here are usually full of PvE MMORPG fans - hence the disparity of reality vs. forum voices
Wait until WoW's world race starts back up, then you'll see WoW in top 3 again.
Events in any game cause a spike in twitch viewers. You should see the numbers when Dota or LOL is having a tournament. Not to mention that LOL streams their own games through their launcher without using twitch. New games also will always be within the top 10 for the first few days. But DMKano is right. PVP is popular and its not massive pvp but small scale games. People like to shine and well it's hard to shine when there are 80 other people on the same field.

No different than watching any other kinda competition show. It's fun to see people compete, learn techniques, etc. I can't stand to watch them, but I understand the appeal.

Some of it has to do with checking out the gameplay with the ability to ask questions to the streamer. The moba's have their own appeal from simply watching because you are at work, watching inbetween matches, watching to learn a specific champ or playstyle. I don't play counterstrike so I don't know any reason to watch it. Hearthstone is also something people watch to learn builds on decks. It also helps if you are looking to buy a game and you can just watch someone play it and ask them questions in the process.
Agree with most here, I just don't understand the appeal of twitch
But, looking at the list of games streamed, I don't enjoy any of those games either. The only common theme is short playsessions and pvp, so I can only assume that twitch appeals to instant gratification crowd and that is reflected in the game choices.
Admittedly, I'd probably rather watch CS:GO for 10 minutes than watch someone grind quests in SW:TOR for 10 minutes, but then I've never bothered watching anyone play any game over the internet. I mean I've tried, but even promotional gameplay trailers I usually get bored within 1-2minutes and turn it off.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
How can people not understand Twitch i can understand if you people said i don't underdstand dark matter because most people haven't heard of it, i don't know what it is either just a friend used to talk about it to another friend of mine but i never paid any attention. lol
It's not about just watching someone, see it as a chatroom where you can discuss a game you like with other people actually we're doing that now except we aren't watching someone play a game while we do it.
I see it as social thing and not just watching people play, a bit sad when people think that is all you can use twitch for is to watch, you can talk to the streamers as well and some are nice people.
I've played LoL, CoD, and CS:GO and I'm simply not understanding the fun factor. I was dropped into CS with some full auto SMG, failed miserably to even HIT an enemy, and uninstalled. If you enjoy running around spaying lead all over the map, listening to 14 year olds bitch and moan....maybe you'll have a good time.
It seems like this part of the genre is clearly aimed at a certain age range.....It doesnt appeal to me one iota.....ALso wouldnt people rather play than watch?

I can't say you are wrong or right in regards to your information. I would say however, I would agree in regards to Mobas. I really don't understand the appeal. I have played a couple of them. LOL, DOTA, HOTS, SMITE but I can't last long term in those games. Not that they are bad or anything just that like you stated they seem a bit shallow. I would go on and say, while they do offer choices in regards to powers and equipment etc. Where you fight seems shallow, the progression seems a bit lacking as well. I do like the characters and their backstories however. I find that the most appealing aspect of these games.
Same with FPS while they are fun short term I don't quite understand the long term appeal. Granted I used to play SOCOM Navy Seals with friends and you could do the local co op thing. It was great as we found inventive ways to kill each other and couple that with the maps and we had a blast so I guess I can see how it can last for awhile. I think mostly I feel like while these games thrive games that have more depth seem to dwindle and are lost as they don't receive as much attention as I feel they should.
In regards to World of Warcraft, what I would really like to see with this game is they make it offline. Not sure how much resources that would take or the cost. But could you imagine that wow would be offline and then you could come back online to do certain things. To be able to play it like say Elder Scrolls where you are a long warrior doing quests, etc. I think that would be brilliant and would sell massive copies. Of course certain things would need to change, but for the most part to have all the armors, weapons in game as well as classes, etc. But not have to be online all the time.
Personally my understanding of Twitch is that you just watch regular people, developers etc play, and discuss their passion which is games. I'm not sure if it is used for other things that are not games but if not it really should be. That being said gamers today seem to be more about which platform is the best or which game is better than which game instead of the awe and wonder of the individual game itself. Some discussions become very rude and unnecessary but you can find quality discussions. I think streaming is a neat idea, as it gives you an understanding of a game through the eyes of someone else. I personally prefer the developer led twitch discussions. I like to see how they developed their games, what their hopes are going forward.
Amen. I don't understand the appeal of Twitch or the appeal of MOBAS. It must be a generational thing.
Watching people play and talk about games you like is much better than reading endless doom and gloom post by people who don't even play games anymore.

Starcraft, Mortal Kombat, FIFA 15 and GTA5 got replaced by
World of Tanks, the Division, Dark Souls and CoD.
