Hearth... Stone... people watch other people play mobile games?  What has society come to?
It isn't a mobile game it was ported to mobile but it started on PC because it's a CCG it's a hell of a lot easier to have it on multiple things. When a game involves a lot of strategy and a lot of thought, people will tend to watch other people do it just to learn better. Especially when it's mainly player vs player. I know a lot of people who aren't into games, but are super into MTG, and will go watch people play that in real life, it's the same thing kind of. They are watching peoples decks, how things synergize together and learn how to play better.

Could you imagine a twitch version of these forums? Haha!  Just a bunch of whiners talking trash about games they don't play.  Lol no wonder they don't understand the appeal.  Twitch is a great way to discuss and learn more about games your are playing and enjoy. That is a foreign concept around here.

Amen.  I don't understand the appeal of Twitch or the appeal of MOBAS.  It must be a generational thing.
Watching people play and talk about games you like is much better than reading endless doom and gloom post by people who don't even play games anymore.
How about actually playing the game yourself /gasp.

I do both /gasp!  How is this such a difficult concept?  You've never watched a speed run or a tournament or, I dunno, been to an arcade or taken turns playing a game with someone?  Jesus lol

It's not about just watching someone, see it as a chatroom where you can discuss a game you like with other people actually we're doing that now except we aren't watching someone play a game while we do it.

I see it as social thing and not just watching people play, a bit sad when people think that is all you can use twitch for is to watch, you can talk to the streamers as well and some are nice people.
Because if I want to chat and be social with people about a game and ask questions I do it in the game not while some internet hipster struts his stuff and talks. Boring.
What!? Lol you folks are killing me.
I watch pros play Hearthstone and street fighter v.  I can setup my laptop with twitch while I'm playing on my console and ask about strategies and tools in real time.  It's an awesome resource and it actually encourages me to play more.  I enjoy watching speed runs and tournaments of games I like to play.  It fosters a much healthier and dynamic gaming community than ones where people crap on everything before it even comes out.  On twitch, people are actively playing games and taking about them.  I play more games now than a few years ago thanks to twitch.  Forums used to be like that. But now they are mostly filled with ranting and trolling.

Maybe it's just me, but if I'm in a position to watch someone play a game, then I'm in a position to play that game, and I'd rather be playing.  I will never understand the appeal of watching random Twitch games.

Probably the same reason that the only sports-ball-goal-basket game that I watch every year is the Superbowl and only because it's more of a national holiday event in my country, which is fun for the socialization aspect.
Some of it has to do with checking out the gameplay with the ability to ask questions to the streamer.  The moba's have their own appeal from simply watching because you are at work,  watching inbetween matches,  watching to learn a specific champ or playstyle.  I don't play counterstrike so I don't know any reason to watch it.  Hearthstone is also something people watch to learn builds on decks.  It also helps if you are looking to buy a game and you can just watch someone play it and ask them questions in the process.
I can understand checking out some mechanics or seeing how something works. I check YouTube a lot for that when I don't quite get how something works. I've watched Twitch streams from developers on a few occasions, mostly early EQ:N. But I don't find any appeal in sitting down to watch entire gameplay sessions. Even in the YouTube "Let's Play" videos I skip through to the part I want and then I'm out of there.
This is exactly what I do too...

Yeah, I don't really use the forums for game discussion. It's impossible. I think, in general, if the games on Twitch interested me I would find it more interesting. The few times I have gone into a stream the chat has been a chaotic mess. Some channels were paid, which I wasn't interested in either. It didn't click with me. I do understand though, that it works for the people whom it works for and that is apparently a lot!

I think the one thing that really turned me off is there was a very cliquish groupy environment of people chatting up the streamer. The entire interaction was gamified with chat levels, priority/important people, etc. It was hectic and not chill at all, for me.
Ah I can see how your experience made it all seem that way.  But just like forums, not all twitch channels are the same.

Good for you. Go have fun on Twitch. Your attitude is exactly what I didn't enjoy about Twitch the few times I've visited and reinforces why I'm not interested in visiting again any time soon. I'm sure there are nice people streaming. Foom is on Twitch and he's one of the nicest members here. I just don't feel like wading through a sea of dooshiness to find it.
My attitude please enlighten me what about it seems to bother you so much that you obviously wouldn't want to be in the same  chatroom as me ?

Just because you don't want to find the streamer you like that isnt Twitches fault that was your choice not to look for someone i can find people easy and i am very picky because i need to find someone comfortable i know i can talk too but i am quite socialable.

Counter Strike's small scope has allowed it to excel in its details. For me there isn't another FPS out there that has the user controls and pacing down like Counter Strike: GO. For me this is the same with other games in the Top 10. There is a limited number of ways to approach the combat with varying benefits and drawbacks that both the enemy and the player know. Its like playing Chess. Very meticulous picking through the various strategies and counters coming out in about 5-10 minute matches.

Same here. The only reason for me to watch something on twitch is to see how the gameplay of a game is and see if it's something I'd like to play (and thus buy). Aside from that, I'd much rather watch The Bold & the Beautiful than that I'd watch someone play a game :D

Yes, the mobile app for hearthstone did come after the PC release, but it was supposed to be Blizzards "Smash Hit" into the mobile market.  After its failure they spent 6 billion dollars to find out why?

I didn't know they had so many people who stream i thought it would be about 500k or so and people say they can't find anyone who streams who is worth watching and talking too. lol

So I don't understand twitch or the appeal of twitch. I'm basing my thought process on a few assumptions:

    1) Doing is better than watching

This may perhaps be where I'm going wrong. I'm of the opinion that if you like something, you'd rather be doing it yourself. I would rather race an F1 car than watch F1. I'd rather be a superhero than watch a superhero movie. I'd rather play a game than watch someone else play. Is this assumption wrong? I just can't imagine any scenario where someone would rather watch something they enjoy instead of do the thing they enjoy.

    2) Watching is acceptable when you don't have access

Whilst I'd rather drive an F1 car than watch an F1 race, I'm not a professional driver and don't have access to an F1 car, so watching a race is the closest I can get. Likewise with gaming. I'm currently at work, so don't have access to games and so I waste my time on these forums and other gaming sites. However, as soon as I'm home, I gain access to my games and so I don't bother with these forums.

    3) Not everyone is capable of understanding a game just from playing

I'm lucky in that I'm an intelligent guy with a background in software engineering, so it is rare that I have to seek knowledge outside of my own gaming experiences. However, it obviously does happen to everyone at some point and so if you want to progress, you have to seek knowledge outside of the game.

    4) Time is precious

I think this may also be another assumption which may be wrong. My spare time is precious. Between full time work, playing roller derby and going to the gym, my spare time is limited and this precious. That means if I do need to find out information for a game, twitch is useless because time is dictated by the streamer. On forums / youtube etc, I can search and find the information I need pretty much instantly. With twitch, I'm waiting on the streamers pleasure.

    5) Online socialising is not socialising.

I'm a firm believe that social networking is anti-social. There re already plenty of studies showing that social networking is slowly but steadily destroying young peoples ability to actually socialise, cutting them off from the real world and inducing mental health problems. Therefore the chat channels of something like twitch should be there to ask questions and receive answers only (seeking of information) but instead tend to be toxic crap or mundane socialising.

    6) Watching someone else play a game is not entertaining

Again, probably another assumption, but I've never gotten entertainment watching other people play games for long periods. Don't get me wrong, I've done it (locally) in the past, but that is acceptable to me because i had input, for example, suggesting strategy, pointing things out etc which have a direct impact on what im watching. Watching other people play is just boring in comparison to playing yourself.

So, thats my thought process. Perhaps you can point out where I've gone wrong and explain why twitch is good? Am I just an old fart who doesn't understand the joy of online socialising? Perhaps you genuinely prefer watching other people to playing yourself? Is it, perhaps, a skill thing, for example do you find watching highly talented players more enjoying than playing the game at an average level yourself?

It's like hanging out with a bunch of goofballs watching a friend play a video game.

It's more fun than TV, for me anyway.  I've completely replaced TV-watching with Twtich.

As for why those specific games are top- the twitch format favors certain formats.  PVP is better because it gives the player something to get emotional about (making the stream more interesting).  Just think if someone was watching you play a game- they'd probably rather watch you play a PVP game.  I know personally if I'm doing PVE I pretty much just zone out, which wouldn't be too good for "ratings".

We were talking about communities formed in Twitch.  let me reiterate a different way. The communities within twitch as a whole are not healthy. You might find an oasis here or there but if it gets to big, toxicity will spill into it from the nearby cesspools.

A majority of the hours watched on Twitch are broadcasted by less than 100 of those 1.5million people.

You have to understand that kids don't watch broadcast TV anymore. Twitch is their TV. It's just as entertaining to them and much more interactive. They watch for the streamers personality.

While i stream occasionally, i personally don't go out of my way to watch a certain stream or follow anyones schedule. I tune in if a new game is released and i want to see gameplay, or if someone is doing something i'm struggling to do so i can get some pointers.

What i really don't get is all these people that donate crazy money to some twitch whore. How desperate are these idiots? There's tons of free porn out there with no need to open the wallet.

The games at the top of the list are pretty depressing though.
