Guys - Stop threatening Developers - Death Threats for Video Games

maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,195
I read through this article here:
http://kotaku.com/i-got-death-threats-for-reporting-on-a-video-game-delay-1779617741

About NMS Developers getting Death Threats for postponing their launch to August.

Seriously, how and why is this happening?  What kind of world do we live in where death threats are EVER even REMOTELY a possibility where gaming is concerned.

I mean -- okay -- lets say I was a backer who spent 20K dollars on a game and it turned out that they took my money and bought a house or something instead -- maybe then I could understand a threat being warranted by someone that couldn't control their emotions -- (death threats aren't ever okay, lawsuits on the other hand....)  but for a game POSTPONEMENT?

What is happening?

It's the same world where some 7 year-old, online, talks about how he's going to eff me in the a and kill my family. It's sad that's not as much of an exaggeration as I'd like it to be.

What else is a disgruntled gamer suppose to do nowadays?
Are you onto something or just on something?

This is sad. No game developer should have to go through that. I will pray for them.

One female devs decided to quit the business all together after she got a death threat on her and her family.  Some people don't understand how serious it is to say something like that because they speak from emotion.  But there are stories of people doing stuff like that on Facebook and getting a knock from the police at their door.

I would hope people would get a knock from the police for doing these kinds of things.  I don't understand how some people can't realize what a big deal this can be to someone.  Besides, scare tactics would probably push me to not release a game rather than release it to someone that treats me that way.

I think it may be a cultural thing.  Some households have children raised in an environment in which threats to kill others is considered normal and never taken seriously.  Other families don't, and some people would only say such a thing if they really really meant it.

I am just unbearable tired of hearing and seeing anything related to No Mans Sky. If I want to play the game I will go ahead and play Space Engineers, stop it already!

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Please do not respond to me

    This is sadly common.

NCSoft, Blizzard,  EA, Trion etc..  all of them have gotten death threats and even bomb threats to where they had to evacuate work buildings.

It happens, it's sort of a known thing in the gaming industry, but it sucks none the less.
I'd claim its a thing in every industry, the gaming industry isn't a unique case in having that stuff.

That said... the claims I'd bet easily are way overblown with almost all of them holding absolutely 0 weight being empty. Best to be ignored, mentioning them comes off as a cheap ticket hoping for pitty or attention for something that happens to anyone with any bit of fame to them.

Threads like this are useless, since most people who make those threats don't even use forums like this and if any did, they wouldn't care about someone saying not to.

:anguished: after a recent post I'm starting to think the wrong people are getting the death threats here .... :eh:

Anyways @octagon7711 I agree it could be cultural... but this is quite a bit more than just some type of hate speech, I mean, in that threat in the article they very much so detailed an imminent attack.  If people have never learned it's wrong they must be taught somehow.  People shouldn't have to live in fear even if it's just an empty threat.  All it takes is one of those threats to turn real before it's a whole different problem.

It's as useless as any other thread I suppose.  But if someone is doing it thinking they are somehow in the right.. having peers specifically state "Why no good sir, you are an idiot, stop threatening people" might go a long way.

If you find yourself typing a vitriolic message to a developer, editor, any video game streamer be it male or female,  etc.  you've done something wrong.  You aren't required to deal with these people, you choose to put yourself in that position.  In fact they, in just about every case, only know you exist because you threaten them.

    Nobody should accept that.

I believe a visit to a jail cell and perhaps prosecution will bring this type of behaviour down. Nothing like some jail time and fines to stop you hand from typing stuff without thought.

I think the best way to implement a way to stop this is the way Korea has set up their online systems.  You should have to connect your social security # to all your online accounts.  You act up, threaten, slander etc.  It won't take long for someone (police, FBI etc) to knock on your door.  After a few examples are made, this behavior will become rare with the exception of mentally disturbed individuals.  The problem right now is that you can get away with this.

I like you Mel and enjoy reading your posts, but disagree with you on this one bro. The latter part where you talk about the word's population not very intelligent I agree lol.

I'm not giving my SSN out more then I have to already. I'm for less police and less government intrusion. I know this isn't a political forum so best not get too heavy into that.

I agree with you now that I think about it.  Maybe not a SSN requirement.  But let's say a specific # the internet provider you pay gives each home.  Something that is always associated with just your internet access and not personal information like SSN.  I'm definitely with you on the less police and government intrusion.  So, maybe this is something that would be handled by Verizon and comcast etc.  Obviously i'm just spit balling here.  This would be something we would definitely need to iron out before implementing.

The US govt can figure out nearly anyone from their internet account anyway.

They just ask certain companies for the person's identifying info, like IP address.

The death threats etc are terrible of course, but in this case what pisses me off the most is twitters' response:

    Twitter condones death threats, gg.
    ....

    what?
  • YashaXYashaX Member EpicPosts: 3,100
    what?
Tweeting comments like "I'll find out where you live and kill you and your family" apparently are all fine and dandy according to Twitter. Makes me wonder what type of tweet would break their rules?
    ....

I agree.  But I was replying to a post that was deleted previous to my What post.

Long ago I had someone threaten to come to my home town and hurt my daughter since I kicked him from the guild.

Was my first MMORPG (L1) and guild leadership role and taught me to share a lot less personal info with gaming acquaintances.

So I quickly got a taste of the craziness out there.
