The only people I know who can't upgrade are people with computers which use proprietary drivers which aren't supported by Win10.

Win 7 is still better than Win 10 for some uses. The changes made to better support tablet devices, touch screens and such make Win 8 and 10 interfaces worse for desktop use. But if you're already running Win 8, then there's no reason not to upgrade to Win 10 as long as you don't have any old devices which wouldn't have drivers available.
IMHO the most noxious of the Windows 10 privacy issues is the sharing of network passwords. This feature is going away with the anniversary update next month. The keylogger functionality can be turned off and their are third party tools to keep it turned off, like Spybot Beacon.
As I do not have Windows phone or tablet the whole ecosystem thing means that my desktop will be more cumbersome and less efficient. There are a number of interface quirks that annoy me every time I turn the computer on and I expect this to get worse rather than better over time.
Finally, for me, there is the constant irritant that I cannot place multiple clocks on the desktop so I can see, at a glance, what day and time it is in New York, London, Los Angeles or Singapore as well as my own timezone.
I've seen lots of issues across several computers, ranging from drivers getting reverted to monitors that wouldn't wake to sleep or start in the incorrect resolution, to just random reboots.
But, most of it as all been cleaned up with patches. It's been pretty stable for me for a while now. I'd also go with - much better than 8, not quite as good as 7. If I were building new, no reason to not get 10 now; if your running 7 and your happy with it, no reason to upgrade either (now that the free license giveaway is gone).
If for some godawful reason your still on Vista or XP, by all means you should have upgraded to something else a long time ago.
Windows 10 itself is great. It's the "Windows as a service" part that people (me included) have a problem with. For gamers, at least, forcing driver updates can be a problem at times. Cortana likes to turn herself back on. After every update, I have to restart because it turns its security features back on and BitDefender won't start. If you didn't disable sending data to MS when you installed, I hear that will turn itself back on as well. I can deal with this, I suppose, and hey, if Microsoft really wants to know what websites I visit, then I guess I don't really mind that either, but I did prefer Win7 as it at least felt more private.
At the end of the day though, I upgraded because of DX12. It won't be long before we will see DX12 exclusive games. This requires Windows 10, so you might as well upgrade now before the free upgrade period ends. After that, you'll have to pay for it unless you game the system via offline upgrade options.
the only issue i jhave with win 10 involves a MMO thats over 10 years old wehre the windows disappear when multiboxing...I doubt they have optimized the game for windows 10 so really I cant fault windows......very few issues other than that
"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services", Microsoft said in its recently updated new terms of services agreement.
What more do you need to know? Nope, as long as that phrase above exists, it sucks.
I haven't upgraded because 7 works well. It was the best windows OS ever and does everything except dx12. When I get a game that really makes use of dx12 in the coming years, I may consider 10, but until then I simply see no reason to upgrade.
You clinging to something old and outdated? Someone call the newspaper!
Had the PC 'upgrade' on me, and am using Win10 now, fortunately you can still 'modify' Win10 to cut out some of the unwanted stuff, like Cortana etc. but you have to mess around with the system to do it, there are youtube videos for most of that however so its not much of a chore, along with anti beacon program you can also eliminate a fair amount of the things in Win10 that cause privacy issues. Win10 is still very much a work in progress, but its more stable now than it was back in October/November 2015, which is something at least. There still isn't really anything out there that uses Dx12 yet, so its hard to say if that part of Win10 is going anywhere, it may even be irrelevant to Win10 anyway the way things are going with Vulkan etc. Dx11 is still the most used version, at least, its the version that is used in all the games i'm playing.
The only people I know who can't upgrade are people with computers which use proprietary drivers which aren't supported by Win10.
This is the biggest reason I waited on the upgrade.
I play a lot of old games and use an emulator of playstation one to play some of my fond childhood games on it. I heard a lot about driver issues and was worried that some of the programs I use wouldn't work.
Also this deleting stuff if pirated is somewhat shady in my opinion. Programs like that emulator could be deemed as piracy, playstation games iso also piracy and so on. I don't want to lose any of those because microsoft deems so.
I have no problem using windows 8.1. Hell, I don't know what's all the fuss about it. Windows 8? Sure, but not 8.1. I barely use the windows page.
This is my windows page:
Behold the hell of windows 8.1! /sarcasm
Microsoft yet again scheduled the upgrade on their own on the 28th. Man are they persistent in making me upgrade to the damn new OS. That is another reason I have waited. It's like they are not confident in their new OS that they keep to remind them on how awesome it is! I get a notification multiple times a day....
If I upgrade, it won't be now. I need to have some free time so I can format after the upgrade and pray nothing goes wrong.
Anyway thanks everyone for the replies. I honestly didn't expect so many replies lol.
You can keep on discussing if you want, I'll keep on reading it as I'm curious on what people think about it. Been a while since I wanted to create this thread since no one made one.
bestever said: Its the best version by far. Don't pass up the free copy you can always go back and still have a copy of windows 10 waiting for you.
Let's say I upgrade to win10 and then revert to win 7. Can I then just install win 7 after a format and keep it? What would I do if I wanted to switch to win 10 again?
I first tried Win10 late last year, i didn't like it, unfortunately, the only way to revert back to Win7 was to format the HD and reinstall fresh from the Disc. It then upgraded several weeks ago, its working okay now, although i did have to reinstall most of the games on my PC as Win10 isn't very friendly towards Win7 versions of games for some reason, and it didn't like my UPS (powerchute), or my Firewall/Antivirus (Avast), and was one of the many things that had to be uninstalled and then reinstalled from scratch, given how insecure Windows is in general, i don't recommend relying on Windows Firewall, for obvious reasons. Win10 still doesn't 'just work' you still need to mess around with it to get things to work properly. And anti beacon is imo an absolute necessity if you plan to use Win10.
I won't be upgrading. I bought my PC specifically with Windows 7 so I could avoid 8, and I have no desire to have my keystrokes hijacked by some Bellevue Washington hivemind. The fact of the matter is, I have too much crap going on in my life to 'relocate' digitally, too. If MS had actually been wise about it and produced a streamlined, sharp project designed for PCs, I might have taken the plunge. Instead, they infested my rig with "official" spyware without my permission.
Fresh install on new system, few tweaks here and there to remove clutter, tweaked UI to look like windows 7 and be snappy and it's being working solid for the last 3 months. It's upgrades on much older hardware that are having issues. There's nothing wrong with windows 10, if you're a Pc gamer. The year it's been out has worked out a lot of teething issues now. I wouldn't go back to windows 7 now as a hardcore Pc gamer.

Many would say that having to tweak the UI like that is wrong.
It's like buying a red car, then painting it blue, because that's a good way to get a blue car.
I'm still on Windows 8.1, I used it as is and there's no need to use shell or anything. May upgrade have not yet made up my mind up on it but I do not like Windows 10 upgrading my drivers one reason I have not yet taken the plunge.
This may change things - not sure if it's for the better though.
If I'm reading it correctly, you soon will be able to link a Windows license to your Microsoft Account. That would allow you to transfer it between motherboard replacements, and possibly between computers.
The old (current) method should still be available (using the product key and Activation servers) - for those that use Local or Domain accounts, for instance . It's unclear what happens for those of us with multiple PCs if you can link multiple licenses to a single account.
I had font issues with W10 with my monitor, had to use an unofficial work around. I also have issues with the new System and Compressed memory feature, it has a memory leak or it doesn't dump anything, no idea. I have to restart my system to clear it up otherwise it'll crawl to a halt.
Have you done a clean install? I haven't had any of that.
Yes clean installs. I've done 2. I haven't reinstalled in awhile though, so the font issue may be resolved. The System and Compressed memory thing is just the biggest issue. There is no one answer to it and it is a fairly common problem. Multitasking ramps it up a lot, even if I've closed programs it is almost as if its keeping everything I've done in memory. So running something like BDO in the background will speed up the process.
In Windows 8.1 I was able to multitask with no slowdowns or issues but I can't do the same in W10 after some time.
The issue is sporadic but its happened to quite a few people. I'm probably do for another fresh install see if it clears itself out who knows.
Sounds like you have an app that is misbehaving and being very memory hogging. I have no such issues with Win 10 at all. No slow downs or anything. I haven't really had any issues other than a game hang-up which people I know who are using Win 7, and 8 also have in the same game.
I find win 10 better and easier to use than either Win 7 or the mistake win 8/8.1. Your RMV.
It's good. I like how the settings are organized. Finding things feels intuitive and the old control panel is still there too if you need it. I also like the customizable start menu. You don't have much to lose by trying it since it is free and you can just click a button to completely revert back to your old OS, as if you never installed 10.
The best part of Windows 10 is hearing people on FACEBOOK complain about its privacy issues

Anyway, I've had windows 10 since its official release and it runs great. Runs better than windows 7, boots up in less than half a minute (windows 7 takes ages to boot up), and the games I play I got pretty big performance increase. Witcher 3 I got 40-50 FPS on windows 7, with windows 10 it bumped it up to 55-60. Of course that is just one example, other games I play didn't get quite the boost, some stayed the same, others went up a little bit.

When I first upgraded to Win10 I would get little system freezes every few mins for about a second. I reverted back to win7 and after a few days tried the upgrade again. I keep getting errors during the second upgrade and ended up having to d/l a few upgrade repair programs created by Microsoft. Eventually the repairs worked and even the freezes are gone.
If you want to revert just go to Start, Settings, Update & security, Recovery, finally click on Go Back to Windows 7/8/8.1, and the process will reverse itself. This won't work if you did a clean install or used a cleaner afterwards that deleted the folder containing your old windows files, also the folder is auto deleted after 30 days.

I wouldn't be surprised if games started coming out that only work with DX12 one day, but that should be awhile yet.

I think it's awesome, but of course we all have our opinions. I use it for work and home. Awesome doesn't mean perfect, but it does mean, for me, much better than Win 7 or 8.1 and it's improving. There is a patch coming this summer to improve and/or add several features.
I would recommend the free upgrade unless you plan on migrating to Apple or Linux. Every OS gets updated and reaches an EoL so why not grab this update while it's free.
In what ways is it "much" better than 7 for home use? What things have you specifically observed that makes it better than Windows 7, not something you read.
