I don't feel all DRM effects people as badly as some of these complaint threads state.
Actually it's the reverse, most people complaining don't understand how bad the DRM installed on their computer really is. They are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
Have you ever thought about the people at Microsoft and Apple who have to work extra hours writing OS updates to patch the holes caused by legitimate companies putting back doors and rootkits onto their user's systems?
Everything has backdoors and holes. If you live your life worried about it then much less sleep and more gray hair. Let someone else worry about it.
Everything has backdoors? Sure whatever you say.
Have you ever thought about the people at Microsoft who have to work extra hours just to make sure Microsoft Office isn't vulnerable? How many security patches have they done for that one program? A couple hundred.
A backdoor is not a security bug, it is a deliberately inserted piece of code that allows the software developer to bypass the security of the system. It can be exploited by hackers but the intent was usually to recover a system for a user wjen they locked themselves out.
Is it fair to assume most of the moaning over DRM heavy games come from people who would just otherwise pirate a game? They claim it messes with their systems, causes vulnerabilities, allows companies to "spy" on them or steal data, bit coin mine ect ect yet most other gamers seem happy or have no issues with these games. Is it just a vocal minority of butthurt pirates? What is going on here?
A good example of such use of technology and unjustified anger it seems to be causing is the Steam launch of ABZÛ which apparently contains Denuvo, an anti theft technology that is integrated into the game (which by the way, other than the claims from a few vocal people you have no real way of knowing it's even there). I have never once heard of Denuvo until this game title.
Another example is of course Uplay by Ubisoft. I have never once had issues with Uplay, yet time and time again anytime Ubisoft launches a title the forums are filled with angry anit-Uplay rants. Maybe I'm old school or maybe it's because I'm not cheap, or maybe it's just a generational thing (gen X'r here), but I have no issues with purchasing games legitimately. I know I have heard of people pirating as a form of "trial" and I think this is partially why Steam created the refund system for games, but it honesty leaves me feeling a bit like maybe it's not just the "industry" that sucks, but the players as well. It's like some secret war going on I must be completely oblivious too. Am I wrong about this?
Yeah sure.. tell me you like to be ALWAYS online to play your game ( UBIshit) . ps: GOG is still making tons on money..without DRM.
The trouble with the stealing a car analogy is that you are actually depriving the owner of a material item, whereas making a cpoy of a digital good doesn't deprive the owner, they still have their item. It's still wrong, no doubt about it.
A lot of people look at the way Hollywood accounting works and think "well eff you then, if you're willing to scam the people that make you rich why should I make you rich?" Obviously 2 wrongs don't make a right but it's hard to feel sympathy for crocodile tears.
I guess a lot of people view Steam as a form of DRM though. You lose access to your account for whatever reason and you lose all access to your games, even the ones already on your HDD. Unlike GOG where you still get to play your downloaded games unrestricted.
Do tell exactly what you did to lose access to your account? I've had an account for years and never had a problem. The only reason you'd lose access to your account is if you did something that caused Steam to cut you off.
Yeah i mean Steam is quite a type of DRM for a long time, when anybody else tries anything people get angry over it though, some games have put the fight with piracy with very strong DRM walls and other protections and that's pretty much what this discussion is about.
