I'm ready to see how this turns out. Later this year we should see the release of SQ42. Maybe a month or two off course but so far we haven't heard any changes in the release dates from CIG. So I am to assume it is on schedule and we should be seeing it soon enough.

3.0 is quite a safer bet to release this year.
Citizencon is next month, less than 40 days pretty much.
Until then there have not been re-confirmation of SQ42 releasing this year, during this year, after its announcement last year. This silence from what i've seen on other games usually follows a delay announcement.
(In fact if they missed it by about a year that would do just fine! )

I'd expect an announcement 6 months or so prior to release with a marketing build up and there's been none of that.
I'm also not too sure if this game is going to get that much marketing. One of the reason why they are keeping so much money for development are because they aren't spending all of it on marketing like other AAA games do and the press is going to talk about it even if CIG doesn't much.
On the other hand, I believe the script for SQ42 was written before the decision was made to even include planet landing.
I would like a release of the first level, or first 10 minutes. I know they said SQ42 Episode 1 will not be released piece by piece, but that was probably meant in terms of alphas and betas...
@azarhal is right, we'll learn more at CitCon.
See this Reddit thread.
Italic above: Aren't we playing a pilot? Why the need for infiltration missions? What kind of monster are they creating?
This is most likely set to be officially announced at Citizencon.
Oh far what Erin Roberts said, about 30% of SQ42 includes FPS gameplay, it's kinda like you can approach the same mission different ways, infiltration was something mentioned as one of those.
When it's clear that the product is going to be late, buyers should be informed in timely manner. Sitting on the info and keeping people uncertain for another month just because you can is not nice behavior to those who have already paid for the game.
The way i see it they don't want to make the announcement without having something to show for it. It's likely at Citizencon, we will see SQ42, hopefully see them actually playing it and then they'll talk about it.
Yes it is annoying. Their pledge document intimated that backers would be the first to know about all sorts of things but that doesn't seem to have been the case recently. Media have definitely been getting first dibs on a load of stuff.
What's strange is that people on the forums or subreddit would probably support a delay if it's for polish reasons or implementing some new tech or whatever.

Something to note, next year is clearly more likely than this year, I think that's pretty obvious but it's still not a guarantee from what Michael Graf said:
They haven't even started the ad campaign for the game.
Anything is possible but we should know for sure at the Con in Oct. I'm looking forward to playing it when it does launch. I've played the whole series.

A German games journalist whose Gamescom video report on Star Citizen and Squadron 42 was picked up by an English-speaking outlet has clarified his remarks.
PCGamesN had quoted a video by Gamestar’s Michael Graf and declared that Squadron 42 had been delayed from 2016 to 2017, but it has since become clear that Roberts said the Star Citizen-spinoff game’s content would be complete by the “end of the year” and that “some [base] systems like the AI or the cover system for infiltration missions […] will take more time,” presumably into the next year, further muddying the supposed release date.
“You are right, that was a mistake,” Graf told his readers. “I have watched the recording of the [Gamescom Roberts] interview again, and Chris talked about 2017. You hear that much during Gamescon, I’ve just mixed things up. Sorry about that!” (Translation by Rarehero.)
CIG has not yet addressed the understandable confusion, so do note that a formal updated declaration about Squadron 42 and any delay or lack thereof has not been made
