We've got decent content coming in decent time for once and the WoW team is already taking more hits, I don't see why anyone currently playing would want to risk that by having members shifted to tend to legacy servers.
are you kidding me. At the end of WOLK the average Sub Population was over 12 million.
Within 6 Months after Cata Blizzard/WoW lost over 5.5 MILLION Subs (Many hard core raiders who set a precedent and standard) due to many factors and over the years the over all Dumbing down & idiot proofing of content ESP raiding. WoW has become so mind blowingly easy. Its a joke; a joke to make the Generation of Entitlement (Gamers) feel better about themselves w/o the effort of dedication Vanilla WoW took.
Want a Legendary weapon ? (that usually meant one or two people per guild of serious, dedicated "REAL" raiders and took almost an entire expansion to obtain) - just grind out a few dailies. Want a full set of BIS armor? Just shoot an apple out of a tree or simply buy a gross assortment of BoEs on the AH - Higher I-Level than you currently need but hey, High item level BoE gear can carry you through that raid right?... because the way the game is going Gear Trumps Skill.
Full raids that took 9 mos to complete now take a week to complete. Sad...truly sad.
And don't give me "times have changed" BS. Gamers have changed because Devs feed into their attitude of Entitlement - Thank you GhostCrawler - Many Newer Gamers today are in a hurry to End Game through the door of Entitlement.
Vanilla WoW or Legacy Servers (usually referring to Vanilla Through WoLK) would have a huge impact and success rate as well as generate a lot of revenue for Blizzard Plus most likely bring back/retain its more amazing tenured players on Legacy servers but also these players might play New WoW as well. And maybe just maybe some of these newer players now who don't have time for lore or tool-kits, guilds or group/team cohesion might find they enjoy Legacy - the rewarding challenge of an older more difficult WoW.
Its an investment but its a win, win all around! =D
Nost created a high demand service for players wanting the original content game. Blizzards rewrite back in cata was for all intents and purposes.. pure crap.
The demand for original content is very high. Many players who played original content hate the new direction Blizzard took to satisfy 12 year olds. Many other who are currently playing are wanting Legacy servers to see what all the hub-bub is about.
The Vanilla server content was higher quality IMO. It was darker, this happy go lucky format that was introduced in Cataclysm is too ... i dunno... teenage quality for me.
I didnt buy into the whole time travel rewrite of Azerothian history... to me it seemed an over stretch that failed to grab the majority of players interest.
Maybe in the end Blizzard should make a Legacy server or two and do an alternate darker story that interests those of a more mature group of players.
Why should Blizzard/Activision (B/A) spend money or time at BlizzCon promoting a Vanilla server. All the Vanilla community wants is to Play WoW For Free (P4F). I suspect that B/A are working on a deal for the Nostalrius team to implement Nostalrius as a p2p operation. Where the Nostalrius team gets a piece of the pie after reaching a threshold monetary amount. If the threshold isn't met, then they don't get paid. The reddit community believe Nostalrius team made the threat already.
That is not the case at all. Legacy players desire Subs. 90% of the population donated monthly to the Nost dev team. The Nost team already made it VERY clear they want nothing but to play the game as they feel (and I agree) was meant to be before GhostCrawler butchered it. The original threat was on initial cease and desist out of pure frustration.

This is because 90% of the newer players don't know anything about the lore - nor do they care to know. I read it was the Devs way to try and bring back BC and expose the newer players to WC3 Lore.
I agree about the Teenage Quality beginning with Pandas for me.
I loved playing WoW and did so for nine years. Then I had to leave, not because I lacked funds. but because the game lacked anything that I wanted to do anymore. It has become to much a casual game rather than what it started out as, a decent MMO with a bit of a challenge to everything. Now it is just faceroll for the win. I for one will not go back for any reason except vanilla servers being implemented. The highest I would go to would be WotLK, at least there were some challenges still in there then that were worth it. I still did not like the changes to the talent system, but could overlook it for the story and the questing system in Wrath. RIP Chuckshot of Draka.
Meh no news here, I never expected them to make one in the first place, why would they are not that desperate for money,
maybe not desperate for money, but probably desperate for players. The company makes plenty of money off of Overwatch, the population drop of WoW though is hitting them hard. Sure Blizzard isnt telling us the declining numbers anymore, but it isnt hard to figure out that since Wrath the population of wow has been in a pretty steady decline.
Think of it this way...
If the player base of WoW was a financial graph of a company then WoW would be a failing business and the Critical Thinking trouble shooters would already have been called in during Cata to see what the company needed to do to bring profits back up.
In this example... by legion the company would have failed, declared bankruptcy and tried to cover its rear.
Guess Blizzards happy to have overwatch covering its losses....
I see very little long term reward for making a legacy server. Short term you get people back, but soon they could be a problem demanding a do over of the later expansions to their liking or even new expansions in their vanilla playstyle.
Don't care about Legacy servers, never did, and I won't start now. What's the point of going backwards? I still can't wrap my head around what Vanilla WoW did so much better?
This kind of thing is just people being "grandpa's" and of course seeing everything with Rose-colored glasses. I really feel there's little to nothing appealing about playing the old version.
I think Blizzard should just work on some of the older content and give it a bit more of an overhaul. Maybe instead of wasting time of Legacy servers, what if they do the level sync thing they did in Legion? Wouldn't that make most of the old content more relevant and worth spending time playing and completing zones? Maybe add the rare monster hunts, and world quests on the scale of the entire game world just like they did in the pre-patch to legion with the invasions? Maybe have current events change some of the missions and zones more drastically so those leveling feel more involved?
I just think there are way better ways to bring back some of the old magic, without devolving the gaming experience to an outdated game.
I know people will hate this point of view, but I feel there's really just a lot of people that don't want to pay for content. They want crap for free, so they will play an older version of the game. Thinking 1-2 million will pay full subscriptions for Vanilla is completely unrealistic. And I assure you if Blizzard handles Legacy servers, you will have to pay to keep the service running, like it or not. Which would be a financial bust in 8 months after all the Legacy warriors bitch and complain about the sub fee and quit. Which if you don't think that is exactly how this will go down, you are deluding yourselves.
Did anyone really think that Blizzard would for once give the players what they asked for?
They are in the business of stringing people along, Legion as their latest product blantantly shows this. They have always been going from "we'll look into that...", "soon...", "we appreciate your feedback..." to "we've never said that...", "everything as it currently is is as intended", "at the moment we have no plans to..."
The problem with giving certain vocal, special interest groups exactly what they want is that it often takes away from what all the other people that happily pay them money without complaining want. So why the fuck should Blizzard give two shits about people that don't like them think?
I am perfectly satisfied with almost all Blizzard products. I own all of their games and play them more regularly than any other companies. Why? Because without a doubt, Blizzard has always delivered on the highest tier and polish of gaming that any company has even come close to, consistently, in all their IP's. Since dollars usually reflect opinion, Blizzard makes more than any other developer, and they mostly do it on PC, where most companies have switch to gain more market in the console. I always know that if Blizzard has a hand in it, it will be a fun, enjoyable experience that I can repeat day after day.
Their investment dollars operates at over a billion. That means people have invested huge amounts of money into a software developer. Software development is one of the riskiest things to invest in as more often than not, companies don't deliver the product necessary to claw back the development costs. Blizzard always delivers on their investments, which is why they have the largest development loans in the business.
If Blizzard puts their name on it, its pretty much a 100% guarantee the game will be quality and fun, at least from an objective, general stand point. Some people just don't like them as a company or their games they produce for personal reasons. But this is the minority, not majority, despite vocal objections to the contrary.

Not that I agree with @Konfess in any way, but I'd love to see a source for your supposed 90% of the population donating. Anecdotal it may be, but I never met a person while playing that claimed to have donated.
Furthermore, as seen here, donations directly to the Nost team were short lived and hard to do. In the short time between when that community update was posted and the time the server was shut down it was only possible to give payments directly to their hosting provider, not the Nost team.
Even on servers where it's possible to get rather hefty rewards for donating I doubt that the number of people who do so is anywhere close to 90%. I doubt it was any different for Nost. Unless you have some proof I can only assume your making numbers up to support your argument, which isn't doing the Vanilla community any favors.
there is absolutely truth to what you claim; However almost Every single player that played on Legacy servers whether Nost or others Private Legacy Servers or have not played but would like to have told me personally as well as stated in forums that they would indeed pay a sub - paying a sub is just common sense as it is needed for maintenance and funding the dev team alone - I actually see this as a moot point.
Did anyone really think that Blizzard would for once give the players what they asked for?

I agree with what you're saying, but I want to point that out everything you're saying can be true while at the same time legacy servers being a good idea can also be true. The original game was popular for a reason; it satisfied its players. The current game also satisfies its players, but not really the same players that enjoyed the original game and not in the same way. If they bring back legacy servers, there's the potential to satisfy both the old and new players.
You are missing the point - a HUGE point: 5.5 Million players left (most of them tenured players - Many of them Semi hard core to Hard core Raiders) shortly after the launch of Cata out of a 12mil + sub base. Why? Because of the drastic overhaul and dramatic changes that clearly differentiates Legacy WoW from new WoW.
I am happy you enjoy Blizzard games and it is true their products hands down are superior to other Gaming Organizations Globally, however that is partly due to the fact of the new Generation of Disposable Flimsy here today - gone tomorrow Games flood the market to satisfy this new gen of zerg mentality gamers.
Those 5.5 million subs left primarily because of the Over all dumbing down of WoW. That is a HUGE number!!!
Playing Legacy is not mere nostalgia but its participating in a FAR superior product that yield a measure of complex difficulty, team work, a superior social structure that is both satisfying & rewarding. NEW WoW now has very little of that. Again...want a BIS Legendary weapon? Just do a few quests and its yours. Where is the challenge and reward in such a juvenile - generation of entitlement system? Where? WoW is no longer WoW that so many remember and deeply cherished. Instead - Its Barney's play time for kiddies of all ages!!!
Since the code exists, its merely man power, time and effort to launch just a couple of Legacy servers. Blizzard (in regards to WoW and D3 at least) stopped listening to the heart of their Core Players years ago.
Most tenured players are not happy with the direction that Blizzard has gone. To ignore those players who clearly set a precedent (which inspires others to rise to the occasion and excel as well) is truly sad. Hell...I remember when GMs actually played the game.
I am perfectly satisfied with almost all Blizzard products. I own all of their games and play them more regularly than any other companies. Why? This is the reason we're in this mess in the first place. Everything
that sells well is almost always pure casual garbage. I hate to sound
like some old "back in my day!" fart but games were better pre 2008.
Blizzard may be able to shit out gold every 10 years but it's only
something the generation raised with phones will truly appreciate.
Blizzard is only successful because they don't take chances, they have money, and they have good business acumen. Everything they make (now) is either a skinner box (warcraft, diablo) or a repetitive competitive game meant to be played in bite sized chunks (overwatch, hearthstone, heroes of the storm). They have it all down to a disgusting science.
We're experiencing a video game crash, but instead of everyone losing their jobs we're glorifying and rewarding the ones holding the smoking gun.
Keep the doors open on any talks about anything to keep the hype buzz going.Try to create some buzz at the same time for Blizzcon to help sales for that advertising event.
Never give distinct answers because A any answer might backfire with backlash/negativity and B your team really has no clue what it is doing because you were too busy marketing Blizzcon.
That is what all that buzz as about.Fast forward and time has shown that since the very first day Wow became a thought,Blizzard has copied SOE and every type of design they have shown.IMO there is no question since EQ franchise added legacy servers Blizzard likely does it as well but also likely is some added twist to make it work and not just be some fly by night idea.
SOE/DB did it for no other reason than hopes of creating more revenue,Blizzard will use the exact same reason but if their team has any competence at all, they will have seen that the gimmick is a VERY short term fix and will not hold up over time. There is real reason behind legacy servers and i know people will not agree at all but i have seen it for years now going way back to Asian grinders.People like to be show offs, have high egos, they want a new server to get all those firsts and perhaps be the new kingdog of pvp.
There is absolutely no logical sense to a vanilla server,i doubt we would even see a content lock because that would not generate NEW revenue.Point being it wouldn't even be a vanilla server for very long and then what?Obvious answer, just more of the same that Blizzard has been doing fro mda y1,creating a carrot on a stick, chase that NEW tier of gear in instances and that si the game from day 1 till now, nothing has changed.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
As to the private server ordeal,i used to be 100% against but after seeing developers purposely exploit and rip off gamer's i feel we need private servers.
Yes in the fine print of sold games there are all kinds of legal terms and documents to thwart any attempt to discredit Blizzard from doing nothing more than exploiting users but imo laws need to change to keep game developers from completely owning the gamer's rights. We buy a home,a car, geesh even a simple slice of pizza,we OWN IT and we can turn around and use it or sell it as we please but somehow game developers have managed to twist the law and our rights via copyright claims and intellectual property rights.
If you as a business are charging people for your service and it is a CRAP service, guess what happens in the real world, somebody else steals your business away.Oh but they are using OUR property to make money from the same service we offer "subscription fees".This is the SHADY part of law i don't like, sure it is your property but you already SOLD IT just like any other business sale in this world.I will point it out again >>>used car salesmen, they are selling dealers cars again, making profit from that same product/sale.
The ONLY difference here is the online service and NOBODY has rights to an online service as that is not a copyright idea.if someone else wants to ffer a better online service they SHOULD be allowed to,yes even if using said game, just like a used car salesmen is using the same product.

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games
