Trying to get the communities feel on this after a discussion in another thread ... So plz answer very simply Is LOTROs Ettenmoors Open World PVP ...

For me Open world PVP is for example UO,Shadowbane ,Eve,DArkfall,Mortal Online ,AC Darktide  etc ..

LOTROs Ettenmoors does not fit , its a very small seperate zone ,that has practically no effect on the actual Game World...

No its not , the question is as it stands , Ettenmoors is not part of the LOTRO world .. even the devs dont list it as such .. https://www.lotro.com/en/explore/world#_enedwaith
Ettenmoors is a very very small zone , you can run across it under 5 minutes .. Its a glorified BG .. simple as that

I don't even know why that is a question.
    The answer is: NO

LOTRO is not a Open World PvP game.
LOTRO has SOME (very limited) Open World PvP areas (1 to be precise)

It can't be any more simple than that.

You just answered his question as a yes.  The Ettenmoors zone is an Open World PvP area.  He did not ask about the whole game.

his question is asking about the one zone not the game.  His wording is horrible if that was his intent.

Does it have "matches".  Are you bared to #v#.  Does it have a "win" mechanism to end the event.   If not then it is an Open World PvP Zone.  Same as other games where they have PvP areas and PvE areas.

No, it's not open world PvP...it's open zone PvP, which is basically the same as a PvP area found in most other games.

Open World = An open world in a game is a game space in which players are not limited to a set path.  So if there are "win conditions" that have to be met then no.

Yep you are right, my head was still with the other thread.
Anyway at least one of the 2 answer was on Topic :p

By the way I think that this thread is going to derail pretty fast as the main point is defining what 'Open World' actually means.
For me it means anything that it is not instanced, but for other the meaning might be different.

This is going to be another Train-wreck, watch this space...

here is a good read.. That is lobbying for OPENWORLD pvmp in LOTRO.And why Ettenmoors is not OpenWorld, the problem it faces and presentts and possible solutions .. most noteworthy is a new server that is actually Open World PVMP............https://theartofwarg.com/category/ettenmoors/page/17/

And this would be fun as hell can imagine the fun as we raid the Shire with a pack Wargs and Spiders , with a horde of Orcs ... Now that would be epic Open WOrld PVMP ..

Let's do a quick analogy that should help this make more sense.

    Open World PvP = Burger
Open World PvP Game = Burger Joint

You do not have to be a burger joint to serve a burger. Serving a burger does not make you a burger joint. A burger served somewhere other than a burger joint is still a burger.

You don't have to be an Open World PvP Game to have Open World PvP. Having Open World PvP does not make you an Open World PvP Game. Open World PvP outside an Open World PvP Game is still Open World PvP.

EVE is an Open World PvP Game.
The Ettenmoors is an Open World PvP Zone.
LOTRO is not an Open World PvP Game.
The Ettenmoors is still an Open World PvP Zone.

By using the term "pretty much" you create a scale instead of a definition.  By that reasoning MOBA's are Open World PvP.

    No because they are instances.

"...an instance is a special area, typically a dungeon, that generates a new copy of the location for each group, or for certain number of players, that enters the area."

LOTRO is not. It is a persistent open world zone.

Thus as an area for PvP it fits the criteria of open world PvP.

The question is what does "Open World" mean.  It is a "playstyle" or a definition of the virtual environment.

WoW is Open World virtual environ, but most would not say it is Open World playstyle.

  • EldurianEldurian Member EpicPosts: 2,736
People are using the "world" part of the phrase incorrectly. Open world PvP does not mean that the entire world is open PvP. It means it's PvP that takes place within an open world.

"Virtually all Open World PvP games place some limit on where and/or when this type of PvP can occur. This is typically done by zone, area, or character level. Regardless of restriction, if this type of combat can occur, it is considered Open World PvP." (source)

WoW is an Open World PvP *game* IMHO because you can PvP pretty much everywhere. If you take ESO as another example, It's not an Open World PvP game because you can only PvP in Cyrodiil.

That's a damn good point. If you were to define Open World PvP as:

"...you can PvP pretty much everywhere within the game."

I'm assuming based off the interpretation that it means "the world is open to PvP" then you have to include titles such as:

    Halo
    Age of Empires
    Starcraft
    SMITE
    League of Legends
    etc.

Because their entire worlds are PvP enabled.

There is no such issue when defining Open World PvP as PVP which happens in an Open World.

  • frostymugfrostymug Member RarePosts: 645
To me, no it isn't open world PvP. It's a (very) little walled garden where you can go PvP and do whatever, yet have zero effect on the game's world and inhabitants. You're not even taking your actual character in there a lot of the time unless you only play freep.

Now, this fire needs some fuel... sandbox or scripted? Go!
