How I Feel About Star Citizen At This Point

A little video I edited in Vegas Pro that sums up how I feel about Star Citizen and Squadron 42 at this point.

Love that video.  Unfortunately the longer development takes the more people will come down on the project.  Even people who have been long time backers.  Unfortunately a lengthy development cycle doesn't always guarantee a great game.

Imagine that. A game looking so good people get restless to play it lol

My main issue when game development drags on is "Will it be outdated by the time it releases?" That is a very serious concern for some of the lower budget crowdfunded games.

Thankfully Star Citizen has 2 big things going for it.

    1. It has almost no competition from AAA MMOs currently in development because the only thing we are getting on AAA MMOs currently in development is rumors.

    2.

As graphics improve it takes longer, and longer, and longer for me to feel like an older game is "outdated". The tech being used in Star Citizen is so cutting edge I question if it will ever feel outdated to me.

Given these two factors I'm content to say "It will get here when it gets here."

That Pic is outdated, it's from 2.5 I believe, with 3.0 and beyond lightning and character faces have improved exponentially!

Well then, it would seem that only those with really, really tricked out rigs will get the max experience. Hopefully we peons will see price drops on some of the current high end vid cards by the time this  maybe goes to beta.

Looking at the graphics quality of what little they've released, I'm worried about this too.  The last time I bought a whole new computer just to play a game, I was sorely disappointed.

So, how many players are supposed to be able to be in the same area? I mean, with this detail, that might work for a high end pc in a single player game.
But for a MMO with PVP and that kind of character detail? That will be a huge difference in performance requirements.

The optimization for this game will have to be absolutely unprecedented levels of flawless for that level of graphical fidelity to work in anything nearing "massively" multiplayer.

What about the new ship package for ONLY 27K. You can't look at what is in the package if you didn't spend 1K on the game. That is ridiculous and GL. I will not try this game as it obviously a Pay to win game.

Any P2W has yet to be determined.  Once the ships they've purchased are released into the wild, we can better judge.  If the biggest spenders end up dominating due to the purchases they made prior to release, you best bet there will be user reviews eating the title alive.

I don't fund KS but I am actually very interested in Star Citizen. The game looks great so far, but there are many troubling signs. However, if it were to actually be released, I'd hop in on day 1 if time permits because it looks like it could be awesome.

The graphics are sweet, the landing on stations and planets is awesome. The P2W aspect doesn't bother me that much, probably because if it is like EVE, it really doesn't matter as the ships are balanced in and of themselves. A player in EVE with 10 million sp vs someone with 100m sp isn't that much different. Even a person with a 2 billion isk ship vs a person with a 10 million ship is overpowered compared to one ship, but if it is caught by multiple pirates, it is game over for the 2 billion isk ship.

Plus, who cares about having all the ships, if the game is fun, then playing it is fun and achieving the ship is going to be fun.

I truly hope it releases and it is good. I just won't throw any skin in the game especially when there are so many other people will to do it for me. If a game doesn't get funded, then it was probably never meant to be.

I have a hard time believing they will let this revenue model go after game release. From business perspective it would make no sense. Their excuse would be very easy too, because ' a MMO is never finished' .

So it would make more sense to keep shifting that line and see where acceptance stops and then just write a public apology letter and shift back a little and keep that going.

The price of the ships in pre-alpha and alpha turned me off right away..... By the time it released I would be years behind the learning curve of many of the players.

This is where some of my skepticism stems from, too.

We've seen pretty much every dev team in the past decade walk back on such promises.  CIG and company have a decision to make:

    A) Stick to their word and undoubtedly lose tens of thousands of dollars (or more) in potential revenue from ship sales, or B) continue the sales and weather the flak, knowing they have a core base who is too invested both emotionally and monetarily to do anything but continue to buy so long as CIG continues to serve them up new purchase potential.

That's really the issue with the beast crowdfunding has become in general- years of expectations (and aquisecense) from whales for devs to continue to provide cash options being lost due to principle, or a guarantee that they will be crucified by the consumer base at large for losing said principles if they recant on their earlier promise.

The more perks you give out for the duration of development, the more you're setting yourself up for a huge gap in revenue if you choose to end those streams at release.

But why is being behind the learning curve an issue? You only jump into games if you are there on launch day? Who cares if you are behind the curve, you start playing and you have fun and you work your way up. The behind the curve is meaningless especially if a game is going to be around for years. what is a few weeks or months lag time?

Also, if you want to catch up to players, just read about the game and study it like you would a test in school and you'll catch up to players. If you like the game, the learning won't feel like learning, you will be having fun.

    The game is doing fine.

After 3.0 the pace of updates shows to be catching up, more releases of gameplay mechanics related to professions, content and so forth, much much MUCH better pace than pre-3.0.

And to me, that's what really matters.

You know what is really beginning to annoy me?  They keep making excuses on why we don't have female avatars yet.  Don't give me this shit that well they have to perfect the male animations first.  Hell, now they are saying they might not even be available for SQ42.  Really?

Calm down with the drama and do some search before posting nonsense.

That package is aimed to the whales and not to regular players. It was the community that suggested CIG to only show it to players with 1k spent. It's a package that includes many huge ship's aimed at ORG play.

There are female NPC's in the current Online build.

Squadron 42 vertical slice showcased several more female NPC's, but you won't play as a female as the main player is male.

So no female players at all in SQ42?

The player is a hot shot pilot and the performance capture was all performed by the actor Ian Duncan so we will play as a male pilot.

Unless CIG does something like in the Witcher 3 where you play other characters I dont think we will get much to choose from.

I got the impression that the marines in the SC universe are predominantly/exclusively male and women in the navy are rare (and mostly in technical positions). With some exceptions (female civilian pilots have been seen and we know of at least one military capital ship commander that is female --> Admiral Bishops daughter, actress Gillian Anderson) it could be argued that there is an in game reason for limiting the player to a male avatar in SQ42 at first (as he is on his first tour of duty).

I'll try it when it releases/launches.

I also think it is either too big to fail or going to be the bigger they are the harder they fall...

CR probably isn't interested in female player characters.  Believe me if he really wanted it, it would be there.  They even had a female dev play as a male character in a demo still using her voice.
