Right but as I said I'm 95% sure I heard this game is oculus rift compatible. I don't know for sure as I don't own one but I remember hearing that. So if that's true they are already prepared for that issue.

Also I kind of question if VR is really the future of gaming or something like 3D Movies or the Wii that will be really big for awhile but won't overtake traditional gaming.
Well, that's the thing, 20 years from now the Rift will be ancient, as will the underlying tech that allows Star Citizen to function in current VR.  Good chance new VR headsets 20 years from now have issues running such old titles, if we haven't moved on to AR products or something else, as you mention.
We've had the option to replace video games and movies with different experiences several times. 3D movies, the Wii etc.

Until they come up with a way to hook games directly into your brain so you experience them like your really there while your body sleeps... I don't think traditional controller or mouse/keyboard games will be obsolete.

People don't have the stamina to take part in a fully immersive experience where they are using their entire body for all that long. A traditional game though, they can play all day. Also, the tech is super expensive and while the prices come down over time don't expect to be getting tech that hasn't even been invented yet for cheap anytime soon.

Star Citizen is a space game and can be played with a rift and a joystick. What is more immersive than that for a space fighter sim until the brainjacks come?

Cockpit seat on hydraulics. With VR helmet and HOTAS joystick as you suggested.

I have seen some of these set-ups amongst SC fans already.

    Including a converted real-airplane simulator capsule ;-)
(used during the night, as commercial pilots use it during the day for training)

There are also some YouTube videos of fans that made a total conversion (mock up of SC fighter cockpit with 3 screens, hydraulics, custom made control panels using tablets, custom made switchboards, foot pedals and voice recognition software with the voice of stars (e.g. J.A.R.V.I.S. voice from Iron Man or William Shatner).

I'm glad I'm not on the hook for $5k, or even $250.

At some point maybe they will stop this spaceship selling madness, but right now I doubt it.

I can't put into words how I feel about this game, to me its just meh...more SC bullshit and the sad part is I did back it

the only thing I am glad about this game is I only spent £30 iirc or maybe £50 but tbh it was that long ago I don't give a crap about the cash now

They will never stop selling spaceships as long as they have people willing to throw money at them.

The sad part is CR could announce they are shutting down development of the game but they are keeping the art department so they can keep pumping out ship jpegs for you to buy and people would probably still throw money at them.

I wont develop any feelings until I can actually play the game on its release date.

Those couple lines summed it up for me.

"Your wasting my fn time..GIVE ME ALL YOU GOT".

Then i have to wonder about people who claim what is already there is decent to good,i am like wtf are you smoking, that game is garbage as of right now.
Will it ever be good?I am more than certain it will have about 2-4 weeks of pretty good game play, after that time period it is just pvp cash shops in space and nothing more.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Then again some people think sitting in a small cockpit is good game play..hmm what can i say,if that is their target for a quality game add in a VR helmet, all the power to you,i am looking for a MUCH better game.

    That's the right stance imo.

There's a reason why you should not take kids on long journeys, they get restless easily while needing constant attention annoying everyone on board with their antics in the process.

Same reason why developers stay shut about their game development process.  :D

When the only reason you brought those kids along was so you could shake them down for gas money every ten minutes, you forfeit any right to complain about their restlessness.

Well last I noticed nobody is forced to buy stuff from Apple, Microsoft or EA...

Well CIG did brodcasted this venture to all gamers interested in space games in general.

I dunno how, why or when kids felt the need to leave the comfort of their nest to venture into the gaming development world but I'm sure they had their reasons.

Maybe they felt the gaming world was missing something when after all it was their life that was missing we can't know.

In the end their money is as good as any even if their judgment is lacking there is still no way to prevent kids with enough age to get a credit a spend money on things they don't understand as Steam so clearly shows.

They would probably end up spending it on booze or bubble gum so it's not all lost anyway.  :D

Thankfully Star Citizen has 2 big things going for it.

    1. It has almost no competition from AAA MMOs currently in development because the only thing we are getting on AAA MMOs currently in development is rumors.

    2. As graphics improve it takes longer, and longer, and longer for me to feel like an older game is "outdated". The tech being used in Star Citizen is so cutting edge I question if it will ever feel outdated to me.

Given these two factors I'm content to say "It will get here when it gets here."
That Pic is outdated, it's from 2.5 I believe, with 3.0 and beyond lightning and character faces have improved exponentially!

I keep seeing all these pics with incredible detail and resolution.  Does anyone believe that this will be how things actually look in-game?  That a modern desktop is capable of running something like this in-motion with dozens of other players on the screen?  It doesn't make sense.

Those are all taken ingame by random players with the Cinematic camera mode.
You can watch it from backers who use it at it's fullest like Hasgaha or XenthorX

You just answered the question why over 2 million people consider Star Citizen to be something special.

Go in game (at free weekend if you do not want to pay anything) and see it for yourself. Screenshots in Cinematic Mode for best results.

Yeah, it's really special at 15fps.
You either have a bad rig or not optimized your SC settings. There can be bad fps spikes but overall the game runs faster than that. And there are many fan made videos online that show it.

How far along in development is Star Citizen, compared to where it's supposed to be?  Is it true that the full game was supposed to launch in 2014, and it's still in a pre-alpha or alpha?
  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,328
The very first iteration - before start of crowdfunding - spoke about 2014. This was supposed to be a much smaller and more focussed game. Then the crowdfunding campaign broke all records and 100+ Stretch Goals were added, with explicit and vocal support by a majority of the fans. It was absolutely clear that this much larger game will take longer. Still ... this "2014" is brought up dozens of times every year, out of context and usually for propaganda purposes.

Star Citizen is currently in Alpha. As of today Alpha 3.2 on Live Servers, playable for all backers.
