You can fast travel by using the map from your camp. You can unlock it by spending about $580. First have to unlock the ledger, then you have to upgrade Dutch's tent for $230, then you can buy map upgrade for $350.
As far as getting to the map and back, you don't have to re-track your button presses. Go to map then just press START and it will get back to the game. I do agree though that there is a lot of running around, but it is a big world and exploring it is what makes this game one of a kind. First of all, it's darn BEAUTIFUL on ANY console (PS4 here). Second - exploring will allow you to meet new people and provide temporary encounters that hugely enrich your overall experience in the game.
Those who just rush through things to get stuff FAST no matter the reason - may give up on this game probably due to some travel times. It gets easier after you unlock the map upgrade explained above. But the game still is focused on meeting people int he wilderness, participating in the open world encounters, defending yourself from competing gangs, and many more fun things.
The stagecoaches and trains act like fast travel too, you pay for the ride and instead of just sitting in them through the whole ride like how it is with gta v taxis it gives some nice cinematics but gets you there faster.
I've done two missions in chapter two I've spent most my time just traveling around, hunting and looking for this damn Arabian white horse. I did find two treasure maps that led me to 6 gold bars at $500/bar.
I just unlocked fast travel, but it's only one way. There are missions that put you back at camp after you finished them by choosing to go back with who your with.

Best game I've played in awhile.
