I really like WOW does now. PVP toggle with PVP based skills unique to PVP. It lets you, the player, choose. I am also excited about how Dune Awakening is looking at PVP. It seems to be treating PVP as more like conflict and war. Now implementation will be interesting but I really like what the plan is. In an interview the lead dev said there would be PVP around crash sites and you may show up and be the only players and proceed to scavenge for resources. All the sudden some big guild shows up with 100 players and you have the choice to run or stay. But with a map that will be giant and with lots of options, its mot like its limited to a certain small area or location.
I have a few problems with menu toggle pvp like in WoW. First, most players will just not toggle pvp because why would you intentionally handicap yourself when you can just simple toggle it off. In wow, most people toggle it on to just mindlessly complete their world quest and toggle it off again. Also with the way WoW does faction pvp one side out numbers the other side every time and of course the winning side can just keep it toggled on without worry for an exp/faction bonus.

Second, one of the reasons I play an MMO is to be immersed in a world. When I go into a menu to toggle on pvp and phase into some alternate reality where people can fight each other it just feels like a game and not a world.

Ultimately what ashes is doing would be my favorite solution if they can get it to work properly. Consequences to random ganking but it keeps that tension that you COULD be attacked even if its rare. Also, the open seas are open pvp as well. The rest is opt in. They made it all make sense from a lore perspective as well.

I can agree but in my experience there are truly no consequences to ganking. Most in the ganker crowd feed on attempted punishment or consequences.

I was using WOW as an example. I do not think the toggle is perfect but I prefer the choice to be in my control so if its a toggle, a zone, etc... I like that model.

Difference is that WOW was a PVE mmo from the ground up, PVP battlegrounds came later. There was pure PVE content, AOC is a PVP mmo with hardly any true PVE content.

This will be there undoing, just like New World, you would think that devs would of learnt there lesson by now.

This is absolutely false. There will many 8 man dungeons and 40 man raids. Both instanced and open world. We have already seen examples of both from their live streams. Most likely there will be way more than WoW had on its release. Its a tab target game with a standard healer-tank-dps format unlike new world. It shouldn't be anything like it.

Its a PvX game. Both pvp and pve. Also WoW started out with both pve and pvp servers both being nearly equally populated for a long time. Battlegrounds came in patch 1.5 shortly after release. Ashes should be similar only with a better system for the open world pvp rather than pointless murdering with no consequences or rewards.

Yes, I would enjoy a FFA game like EVE but designed around a traditonal fantasy theme which had character based avatars instead of just ships.

I agree.  While some loved the TEF system in SWG, I absolutely despised it.  Nothing ruined the game setting more that having some group of rebel scum jump suddenly flag and jump you 5 on 1 and then literally a few minutes later they are just dancing and waving at you in the same place and you cannot do anything about it because their "flag" is off.  Total bullshit.

Make no mistake AOC is PVP mmorpg first and foremost. Nearly everything you do in game so far is for PVP in some way it effects your PVP.

We been getting cookie cutter MMOs for the most part. Taking the same concept since WoW. We have gotten so many WoW clones or MOBA combat over done.

Ashes is doing something different and what do we demand? Pull out that cookie cutter please. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone. Ashes has made every system in the game play into PvX. Not here is an MMO with a slice for PvPers and over there a slice for X, Y, Z gamers there.

This gane is not for everyone. But people who live for meaningful PvP that has real inpact on your server. People that like PvP and PvE. This is their potential MMO home.

Trying to make this game more PvE carebear friendly, would need to rework every game system.

That being said this is not that scary. Yes PvP enabled everywhere but the flagging system does two things. People who PK gamers will open the PKer to losing allot if they get killed. Also debuff that make it impossible to keep PKing. The debuffs get so bad a 5 year old with a practice sword will be able to take out the PKer.

No loop hole, only game time will remove crouption and PK debuffs. Yes every area of PvE has a chance for PvP but you will mostly be doing that teamed. So that also slows down PKers.

Ashes is designed with more PvE content then allot of PvE MMOs. Crafting, Mount husbandry, Housing open world and instanced, Raids, Instanced and open world dungeons both small (supporting a couple of teams) to very large (Seven floors and each floor supporting up to 6 teams. Just to name some. Real PvX done right is your PvE at any time, may include PvP.

Also PvP encounters also have objectives that require you to PvE or you will lose the PvP battle. This is one of their anti zerg mechanics. :)

Main inspiration for AoC is ArchAge which at it's core it's a Conflict/PvP/Guild vs Guild game if I'm not mistaken.

Oh yeah it definitely popular in other genres but how much so in MMORPGs though. I'd say FFA  full loot in MMORPGs where you spend a lot of effort gaining gear not so much.

Ashes has already showed a few raids and WoW had 1 raid on release.

I played alpha 1. The last time we got to play the game was over 3 years ago. There will be alpha 2 information revealed tomorrow so we will see how it goes.

The devs themselves call the game PvX. I dont see how dungeons/raids are pvp focused. Its got all the same stuff you would do in a PvE mmo.

I liked in DAoC that gear was not so much the focus. Gear wore out and broke but was easy to get. Mostly items came from crafters with some cool drops that were easy to get. I am not sure where Ashes lands in this. I know 30-40% of your chars power comes from gear but what the % of standard gear power over epic rare gear. I have no clue. Cant wait to find out.

I enjoyed the PVP in DAOC too. I went to an area and the rest of the game aside from Darkness Falls had no PvP. I love this type of PvP game.

Every town will have a certain number of plots available for open world houses depending on the size of the town. You can also build open world houses on a freehold which is a plot of land outside of a town. These things may not be easy to get though because spots are limited. So towns can build apartment buildings which allows for many instanced housing so everyone should be able to get some form of housing if you have a lot of citizens.
