The Guardian is a respected broadsheet but the days are gone when that meant anything, the bywords of broadsheet and broadcasting where once reason and balance. Now their bywords are drama and fear, they have adopted the very position of the tabloids and social media whom they still point the finger at for bad news.

This may be very serious, studies are just starting, but the journalists already apparently know.

It’s going to take it’s toll, Virologist’s have been telling us that viruses can’t be controlled since we’ve known about viruses.

    We keep working on it.

*My government* is not trying to kill or subdue you.

Yes, there are legitimate reasons to be wary of new vaccines, kind of like buying the first model year of a car. Thing is, the quality control is as good as humans can accomplish in these things. How many hundreds of millions or maybe a billion have taken a vacation now?

I was stunned to learn that my kids were never taught about Julius Caesar or Genghis Khan in public school.

They say those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

These are depressing and more importantly trying times.

     Imho

edit: changed Your government  to My government  because that’s not true for everyone unfortunately :(

There wasn't really anything wrong with Guardian's article. It was more like OP was unhappy with possible consequences mentioned by Guardian, and invented his own more radical consequences.

The tenor of the article is fear. It is not just what is said it is the words chosen.

concern, extremely high number of mutations, issuing precautions, travel restrictions, markets around the world saw falls, uncertainty.

That's just from seven consecutive lines. The fact that real significance is not known is mentioned once, as a medical opinion put in amongst many more anxious quotes from the medical community. While they drum up fear by looking at countries reaction across the world which is politicians voicing the same concerns again and again. This is not reason and balance.

The sad fact is from the Telegraph to the Times, from the BBC to Channel 5 this is what the fourth estate is now like.

Let me take this opportunity to say get your first, second, booster jab wherever you are at as that makes perfect sense while ignoring the doom mongering.

I would say the only doom thing about it is that it points the fact that this virus is going to be with us for a very long time.  Also that we should not be surprise about maybe seeing lock downs continue to happen in the future. Best I think we should hope for is that will become benign over time. That it will be like the seasonal flu, a thing you put up with and take some precautions for.

new variant=medium term vaccine side effects. Have another booster or 10 to make it worse. Variant is a timely cover story.

Viruses were here long before us and will remain well after we're gone. Viruses change to stay alive. For example, We have lived with and through various influenza strains for generations.

Mass chaos and over reactions are just a part of the human race. Fortunately it's not all of us. Unfortunately it seems almost (key word) exclusive to those in charge.

Just give me all of your stuff if you're headed off to live in seclusion with your N95 mask and hand sanitizer.

If a virus like Ebola Zaire ever mutates to take longer to "incubate" before killing it's host or goes full air born there won't be much left of civilization or humanity.

Looks like the Earth is trying very hard to control the numbers of it's greatest parasite.

Probably a good time to pray to whatever gods you believe in.

Yeah yeah doom and gloom doom and gloom, gooble gobble one of us, one of us. I've had Covid, it made me mildly ill, and I'm fully vaxed for whatever good that will do me. And while I agree Covid can indeed be lethal you probably have a better chance of getting knocked down by a cross town bus than dying from the virus if you are a normal healthy individual.

Once upon a time not that long ago we looked at lunatic fringe survivalists as complete nut jobs for sitting in their bunkers, surrounded by a massive over supply of sundries, and clutching their shotguns waiting for Helter Skelter or the Red Menace, or Global Thermo Nuclear War, or possibly even Gozilla.

Now days those nut jobs are us. It reminds me of my early childhood where our leaders actually believed the best way to survive a nuclear attack was to hide under a desk with a book over your head. That we could somehow win a nuclear exchange and still have some semblance of society left afterwards. These days our leaders seem even stupider than that. I'm not going to spend the rest of my days hiding in a hole because some weak willed, incompetent milksop of a politician tells me to. Arseholes, the lot of them.

Actually were in this position because we were, as a group,  unable to detect and control the parasites who have a death grip on humanity and the infestation is now fatal.

Most people are good and work hard, hardly parasites.  It's not the "earth" that's trying to get rid of us.

That's the most ridiculous conspiracy theory ever. Viruses do not penetrate intact skin. You can get a virus through mucous membranes in your lungs, mouth, genitals and sometimes even stomach or eyes. You can also get a virus through open wounds. But a virus can't get through unbroken skin.

    Interesting, I also believe you.
So why are sanitizer stations every place since the pandemic ?

By using them your rubbing "what ever germs" that are on your skin.

Don't know why your calling me ridiculous, I'm not the one putting the stations all over the place.

Watching videos of people, you see them rub their faces all the time. People rub their eyes, their noses, and their face every few minutes.

Try it; watch yourself, and count how many times you rub your face.

Using hand sanitizer kills the virus on your hands so that next time you rub your face, you won't get infected.

Should civilization fall to dust there will be no MMORPGs to play. Reality will be far more adventurous to compensate, though many will dislike the increased rate of permadeath.

While the Covid-19 pandemic is enough to make the house of cards modern civilization is built of wobble I don't think it enough to make it topple. Though many have died and many more have been impaired for life, the overall rate of those that suffer so is still low and being further reduced with vaccination.

Still, the impact it has had shows we are inadequately prepared to handle pandemics with even that degree of severity. We'd do well to collectively maintain a higher degree of preparedness as it is only a matter of time until one of greater extremity comes along.
  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,499
COVID isn't going to cause the collapse of civilization.  The real nightmare scenario is a virus that is both tremendously contagious and also extremely deadly.  COVID is the former, but not the latter.  If it had the lethality of smallpox or bubonic plague, then we'd be in real trouble.

I think bcbully's point was that, as ridiculous as delete's claims about hand sanitizer are, there are more ridiculous conspiracy theories out there.  Such as 5G radiation cloning things, or whatever else it is that 5G radiation is speculated to do, at least apart from transmitting data and slightly warming things that absorb it.
