Most MMORPG’s
I have tried are at least somewhat fun and or playable, the worst so called *Game*
I have ever seen was played by a Niece and a nephew (6 and 5 years old at
the time) on their parents old off network phones. I don’t play mobile
games myself and they were excited to show me this game, IDLE something or
other which as I watched them *Play* was basically a damned advertisement
dispenser.
When I mentioned
that to their parents’ what garbage this game was, they told me the kids only
got it for 30-45 minutes after supper, which allowed them to clean up the
kitchen uninterrupted, so the time was a treasure to the parents.
I gave the
kids a SNES classic right away and that became the de facto gaming device they
used, Mario and Luigi Halloween costumes, cakes you name it followed. On a happy note,
they got their first switch last Christmas ?
Me and friend loved playing Warhammer Online. It was not bad game at all. It was just released to soon by EA. They did not had patience to wait, they wanted money asap.
I played with a guild for about 9 months when it launched and we were following it for a few years beforehand. From what I
remember Mythic got the Warhammer license agreement and started making the game,
there was a lot of excitement because DAOC was the best RVR game ever and the Warhammer
IP was extraordinarily popular and suited to this kind of RVR world design.
For
whatever reason (money issues, earn the company founders a ton of money,
join the biggest game marketing machine at the time) a year or 2 later they
sold Mythic to Electronic Arts.
When Warhammer released at the time, I thought
the same, EA jumped in and forced their hand, releasing to early but knowing
what I do now we may not have even had the game if it wasn’t for EA. We can now
see what happens when Mark Jacobs gets an unlimited artistic time frame with little
to no over site to create an MMORPG as Camelot Unchained is in its 9th
year of development.
Even before release,
even when alpha reviews are negative.
All this does not matter. People will play garbage if it's hyped or
advertised, popular name backing it, or simply pre-picked by word of mouth as the new fad. Even knowing in your mind
it will be boring too easy or just plan bad, it doesn't matter…. Millions will
play everything anyway.
I believe the
reasion is that " mmorpg players are starving", coupled with Free to
Play. What better way to play a game for
free by having a game ftp ?
I knew New World
would be boring. You did too.
I know Pantheon will
be unplayable and completely broken. Here's the funny thing you know it too !
I know Ashes of
Creation is very complex, too complex, it will be completely broken for years.
Yet in our my minds on opening day will still be fooled anyway.
Nothing matters,
their will be millions, playing everything .
Complaining always comes later, but purchase first !
This is why games
last 30 days, people must play garbage.
Vanguard, NDA or
not, word was out that it was completely broken and un playable, no one cared. I would have too if I had a good computer for it.
Wildstar, need I say
more.
Warhammer, and I'm
just getting started.
Tell us about Star Citizen, Delete. Will that be the next WoW?

It took SC roughly a decade to gather 3,5 million “fans.” WoWs Battle for Azaroth did that in a single day. That is after pretty much all WoWs expansions did slightly less on release day but still 3+ million a piece.
But, perhaps SC will reach these numbers too, when it launches…
/Cheers, Lahnmir
The quick math is that the average user has spent about 127 dollars on SC (sorry that's a mean, obviously outliers in each direction).
I dont know if people will really play trash, some will but I find the gaming community (if not too negative at time) really speak up when they find a good game and warn about what they dont like in any given game. Follow the right reviews and you can avoid pitfalls. Even the mass of New World was easy to avoid if you took a few min to look into what people were saying. I dint play and many of my friends did not as well. I know many also went in knowing they could get a refund. So risk/reward is acceptable. Gamers have gotten smarter if you ask me.

There does seem to be a trend for games to make as much money as quickly as possible before people start finding out the flaws of the game......and many gamers pony up the $40-60 to play at release too.....Delete you just have to accept that the times are different now....It is more of a money making business than it was when UO and EQ came out.....

I am not sure things are that different. WoW launched with no end game content. Level 60 I remember only thing to do for months was raid cities. EQ1 launched with no raids or real end game content. Just a bunch of dungeons people loved to do. New MMOs now launch with MMOs that have 10+ years of content under their belts. Its a big order to compete with.
Well, I tried WoW. Didn't like it. Never played it.
It was my first MMO. I played it for a few months. Then I realized there are also good MMOs out there and I stopped WoW and played those.
Never played Wow either. Couldn't get past the shirtless abs dude with a sword the size of a surfboard.
It is strange that I can get past magic, dragons, undead walking around - but something about a 1500lb sword just kills a game for me.
This isn't realistic and immersive to you? Yeesh I guess beggars can be choosers.
One gimongous cricket bat err sword was not enough, she had to have two! Next to her...you are thinking that's her bed right? That's her handbag, how else is she goona lug that bat sword around?

People like different things and have different tolerances. This is a standard debate though, so I'll go ahead and have it real quick so that everyone can move on.

I'll offer that it's always been a money making business.
But like everything, once someone sees the potential for a LOT of money, they tend to take advantage of it.

Why are you acting like all the MMOs that have ever launched started out just as bad or worse than new world/wildstar etc. Most of them are still an absolute mess even after decades of being live.

If all it takes is some hype to get people to play absolutely anything at all, then why are so many games commercial failures? Are there a bunch of publishers who don't realize that their games would have been successful if only they had been hyped more?
Agree with OP, the standards have changed. People will play games that would have been considered garbage before. Its unfortunate but we have had to change our standards to find a drop of entertainment value. There was a time when you could be picky and still find a good MMO. I skipped EQ, went from UO to DAOC to WOW. It used to be you could make checklist and expect to get 15 of your top 20 things you wanted, now you are lucky if you can get 2 or 3 things on your checklist. But 3 is better than 0.
There was a time, if there was just 1 or 2 things I didn't like I would move to the next game. Now I deal with many things I hate, if only it has 1 thing I like. Its a sad reality.
So many players don't even know their standards changed. They have nothing good to compare too. When people are completely starved they will think the most nasty food is the best they ever tasted.
I suggest you wear some thick beer goggles or you will be sitting here complaining about games for 10 years. The standards are going down not up. Be happy if you can eek out any fun times from a game.

I'm trying not to derail the thread too hard, but in all fairness they did raise that much on a premise, not even a proof of concept first
