They also made a global message

Maybe Stephen will learn from this and fix the gaping holes in his "flagging" system as far as preventing griefing.

Guess they dont want the game to look so bad when the streamer is getting ganked constantly.

So the popular streamer gets protection from their great PvP system. Flawed system is what it is.

Streamers get their own servers in some MMO's this is nothing new, still dubious none the less. But I am happy streamers do get their own servers, I would not want to play on a server with them.

If they don't wise up before launch about how byzantine their flagging system is I can't see the game being a success. But launch is ages away and fingers crossed they wise up.

Stephen has said (now, not sure if this is new or a reaction to the griefing incident) that you will not be able to PvP in the starter zone.   I think that is another good, incremental shift in the right direction.

But at it's heart, this incident indicates to me that they definitely have a system problem which does NOT prevent griefing.  If it were player XYZ, Stephen would not care.  He only took action here because there were 70,000 viewers watching Asmongold when it happened.

Seems odd, isn't PvP, griefing, and PK'ing a selling point for the game? Isn't that the audience they are going after?

Look, fully 90% of the posters in this forum took a look at the ruleset and immediately identified several serious problems.  I'm shocked that alleged game development professionals cannot see the obvious flaws in core designs.

This is as bad as a car designer having the exhaust vent into the cabin and claiming it helps warm up the car for the occupants during the winter.

Additionally, the total disconnect from community management norms that calls out a streamer for protection - boggles my mind.

It may be time to deposit this title in the "clueless" bin.

Well.. the Reddit and Discord have blown up about this.

And this is a GOOD thing.

The system they pushed had far too many ways to be abused.  Now, they can see the massive amount of feedback they are getting in real time, while there is still time to change the systems.

It's a fine needle they need to thread.  They want to make sure there is danger in the world, and that players can take corrective action and fight other players doing things like spying, or botting, or some other abusive action.   At the same time they need to make it very painful to just gank random players minding their own business.

I have always found flags the be a very flawed system.  We will see if they can keep tweaking it to get it into the elusive sweet spot.

I can talk about the A2 testers I have played with thinks. Seems 1/2 seem to like the flagging system and 1/2 want a PvE server. I have only met one person that said they will not play Ashes with the current flagging system. They were a Kickstarter backer that had no clue back in 2017 when Steven was pitching this game. They missed he was talking about a PvP world. Personally I hope Steven sticks with his plan but does keep working on making courption system more polished. They are going in the right direction IMO.

Gonna be fun to watch the burning ship slowly sink.

"If you don't like it, we'll ban you!" "This game isn't for you!" "Go play something else." "Buy another product." Great marketing slogans from failed businesses that could have been successful, but weren't.

I watched the stream. Poor fellow was being constantly attacked and others were healing him. So it went on and on. He wasn't even able to look around , he was running about trying to get away and the attackers and healers followed him.

    It was a total shitshow.

The developer's reaction to asmongold getting attacked and being PvPed does not bode well. It showed clearly this is a developer very much afraid of what impression is being created and far from the blasé "this game isn't for you" attitude.

Most mmo games and specially crowdfunded ones live and die by fostering a healthy community that keeps growing/renewing. Protecting players enjoyment (streamers or not) while the game is being developed and doesn't have systems in place to deter griefing is mandatory.

Isn't griefing the entire point of a FFA PvP MMO?

hmmm I think that's what happens but it's not the point. Well, I suppose it would depend on the game and its systems. In Lineage 2 open pvp was for finding and attacking enemy players, clearing out areas where you and your group/clan wanted to level, and essentially creating danger.

I remember there was a bridge where there was a higher level player and he/she (probably a guy but I did once meet a pk'er who was a woman.) would charge a toll for those who wanted to cross. And they were good to their word Pay them a toll and he would let you on your way. Don't pay the toll and he would "kill" you.

It just so happens that griefing is a part of that pie. But I wouldn't say it's the "point."

I think the focus on this is in the wrong direction. We see it as Steven is a jurk. His focus is off.

First Steven is working hard to make PKer a thing that is really bad. Using it is a choice but be ready there will be consequences. Steven saw his game being used in a way he did not intend. Till he can patch it and make sure that does not happen till then. He saw what was happening and put a stop on it. He so much does not want that to be part of his game. He would rather perma ban someone who was grefing. Myself. I'm happy he did what he did. Will he be able to tune the flagging rule? I don't know but I appreciate he cares.
