Originally posted by MisfitZ I decided to purchase a Revolution after watching the video demonstrating how the controller works. Nintendo is doing something awesome: Advancing the way we interact with games.
If you can call their gimmicks innovations. The DS dual screen is nothing great, it's annoying to look at two screens. Most games just fill the botom screen with filler images. A touch screen isn't new for gaming either. There are PDA's and a little system called Game.Com that failed. No one uses it because it's hard to develop for and serves a poor method of control. A big screen and normal controls is much better (ie. PSP).
This new controller where you swing randomly around already exists in a game thing called Xavix. It doesn't work very well and I'll be surprised if Nintendo gets it to work nicely. Their systems and games these days are gimmicks mainly tailored for kids. It looks like the Revolution is no different.
lol nintendo is making a huge mistake....it looks kind of cool, but who is going to want to hold that? I mean do people play video games with their remote now?
Since I've seen that, I will NOT be buying the new Nintendo. You can't do anything with that "simple" controller. I know they tried to make it more simpler to use, but come on! It's foolish.
It's amazing how pathetically shortsighted everyone is over this. So many people are making these snap judgement calls based simply on how the controller looks.
On other boards people are whining that "you won't be able to play game x or game y with this controller". You know what? You're just being lazy. Ultimately people are bashing this controller because they are too unmotivated to spend a little extra time getting used to something new/different. Think back years ago when you first played a game using a 'conventional' controller (which Nintendo came up with, by the way). Were you an expert with it? Not hardly. You had to get used to it, but in a short time it felt completely normal.
It's just laziness. Out of the three, I'm looking forward to the Revolution most of all.
Why take something that EVERYONE's use to and then FU** with it and make it look like a piece of crap. How are you going to play FPS, RPGs and other games that require more then 2 buttons...
OH MY BAD! This is Nintendo. I promissed myself I won't say or do anything foolish, but just think for two seconds.
They [Nintendo] is trying to reinvent the wheel, again they are doing something foolish and won't make the sales they predect.

This shows me that you have not read anything about the controller at all, but have simply judged it based on it's look. One of it's big strengths will be FPS games, as it has been stated by those that have played the demo of Metroid Prime 2 (modifed for the controller), that it makes playing FPS games even easier and more intuitive than using the keyboard/mouse combo. And I suppose, for people with bear claws-type hands, that xbox's controller felt -so- right. That controller had more buttons than a bra strap.
It's actually pretty similar to any normal controller... just split up into two pieces connected by a cord. The reason it's split up, is because only the right side has the aiming thing, so the left hand piece has the analog stick for movement. There's a total of 3 buttons... i think they shoulda tried for 4, but the "shell" controller combination increases that aspect. You've still got your start and select, and an extra D pad.
This is an IGN creation or something, but it's just to give an idea.
The first picture isn't nothing more then a Gamecube controller... I see how it's suppose to work, but I don't think people want to "relearn" how to play games.

It looks like a remote... unless for some reason you think remotes look stupid. If youre going to make fun of a controller for looking stupid, then attack the PS3 controller
I'm all for remotes, but you don't use them for games.. I mean.. there's already a ps2 controller out.. been out.. imagine using 'that' to play Max Payne or something.. I think not sir..
Uh, you would use the remote like a mouse using it to look around, and use the analog for movement. It would be way better for FPSs aiming wise than a clumsy analog stick.
I liked Metroid Prime just fine on my GameCube. I can only imagine if I did buy such a thing, I'd drop it on the ground so much I'd have to hide in the mountains away from civilization in order to mask my embarassment.

If it's fun, then people will "relearn" how to play games. Personally, i see lots of potential for FPS games. The left hand piece allows you move forward/back and strafe, the two index finger buttons are fire and something else, while you still have the A button too. The D pad can let you switch through weapons. It could almost be like a combination of "Time Crisis 3" style pointing and shooting at the screen, with conventional FPS movement on your own part.
Lot's of people learned how to dance on DDR pads because it was fun. The eyetoy has been said to be fun, despite how ridiculous people look waving their arms at the TV. I don't see what's so bad about this new controller other than that it looks different, and i applaud Nintendo for having the balls to try something new. Yes, some people say they like to throw "gimmicks" in... but you never know when a gimmick will become the next big thing.
Nintendo is THE pwnerator and was making big market release games when most of the people who post on this site were still just in concept.
I love Nintendo and Mario like I love Star Wars and Indiana Jones. That controller looks wierd as all get out, but so did the power glove! Oh wait, the power glove sucked.... hmmm....Ok it's wierd but kinda funky too. I love change and it's actually about time someone mixed it up a little, looks like it will work don't you think?
Wierd can be good too, just look at Napoleon Dynamite My vote is, try it you might like it....yeah, yeah that's it.

This is very true. The reason I'm so excited about this thing is because it is so different from what we have right now. I've moved on to playing mostly PC games in the past year, simply due to the fact that I've grown tired of the same old same old from consoles. When you think about it, except for better graphics and processing power, consoles haven't changed in a very long time. We've essentially been playing the same damn games the same damn way for ten years now. Except for the advent of online play, how has console gaming changed since the release of the N64 and PS1? It hasn't.

This isn't DDR, you don't dance on your game controller do you? I didn't think so.
Why take something and redo it? I think XBOX and PS has some of the best controllers, why doesn't Nintendo think they have to REDO everything?
Again, I believe it's a nail sealer for a lot of people... I know I will NOT waste my money on that system or any other systems for that matter.

Of course it's not DDR. That was simply an example, based on your comment about people being unwilling to learn new ways to play games. You think people will reject something just because they're unfamiliar with it, and i'm using examples to show you that people can try something new and get hooked on it. See?
The original D pad was an innovation. I'm sure someone back then questioned why they had to try something new too. The simple answer is, because it could lead to something better and more interesting. As you can see, the Revolution controller has more than one form; and that allows many different game styles to be made. The traditional controller is likely better for certain types of games, and they acknowledge that with the shell attachment. But the point and nunchucks open up a new dimension. How can you complain about new types of gameplay?
I see many people on this forum claim that they consider gameplay the most important thing. Apparantly that's not the case, if they can call Revolution trash just because they're unfamiliar with the controller. But if you're a true gamer, you'll see that this is a big step, and a big risk by Nintendo... and that it deserves more than a 4 second snap judgement based on your inability to deal with new things.

Do you not understand what I'm getting at?!
Yes this might be the holy grail of controllers, but I highly doubt it. Look at how many times Nintendo has tried to "redo" something and it was a total flop.
I'm saying their track record isn't something I can hold them to.
So we will just HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE when it comes out, don't we?

This is very true. When it comes to MMORPG gamers, one of the biggest complaints you hear is how the MMORPG genre isn't trying to innovate--how everyone plays it safe and boring. Yet, when it comes to a new console controller, those same people whine "Why change what works? I don't want to learn how to use something like that." LOL Whatever.

Lol, they practicly invented the d-pad, they practicly invented the analog style controller. 2 things you find on virtually any controller these days.
I dont know about this controller really. 1 thing i like about a console is the fact i can play it laid back on the couch. I dont want to be swinging or waving my arms, and what if you play multiplayer ? You had to sit at least a arms length from each other. I really dont know, i think it will be fun to play around with and for for instance a FPS it would be handy if not the new "way to play", but i dont wanna sit with my arm extended for 4 hours ?
I think it will allow some innovative ideas and games, but i do think nintendo would be wise to offer a "standard" controller alongside it, and i really wonder if this will be a revolution, and not just a funny "extra" on the controller market.
Originally posted by Djin Do you not understand what I'm getting at?! Actually it is you who does not understand what everyone else is getting at. You're simply refusing to look at the bigger picture because you don't like how the controller looks.
Yes this might be the holy grail of controllers, but I highly doubt it. Look at how many times Nintendo has tried to "redo" something and it was a total flop. Interesting. Please list all of these total flops Nintendo has been guilty of. The only thing that really bombed on them was the Virtual Boy. While they may have come in 3rd with their last two consoles, ironically enough it was because they were NOT moving foward in design like their competitors were (N64 with the cartridge format, and GC with no online play). As far as "redos" go, they've been highly successful; they created the D-Pad controller set up which was used by all competitors up until (*gasp*) Nintendo created the analog controller as well (and we all know that was a total flop, right?). If you remember correctly, both the Sega Saturn and PS1 had standard D-Pad controllers until both saw the inherent advantage in the N64's analog controller. I'm saying their track record isn't something I can hold them to. So we will just HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE when it comes out, don't we?

It's been stated that the controller is highly sensitive to movement, so while you can play with exaggerated movements if you want to (like in the presentation video), you don't have to. Gamespot's playtest with the controller stated that it responded well to even very slight movements.
So all those lazy gamers worried about having a heart attack playing games need not worry lol...
