I question whether the 17,000 concurrent users record could really be considered a record...
The reason...Guild Wars. GW has all users on the one "shard" (just as EVE does) in that ALL users can group up with, communicate with, all other users of GW.
Now, NCsoft doesn't release figures, but playing with the numbers a little bit gives food for thought.
EVE 70,000 subscribers approx. & 17,000 concurrent users, that's 24% approx.
Guild Wars 1,000,000 copies sold...let's do the sums.
Assume only half of the 1,000,000 still play...so reduce it to 500,000...also assume that GW purchasers aren't as attached to GW as EVE players are to EVE, so maybe the percentage of current GW players compared to those online at once is a 1/4 of EVE's ratio, ie. 6%.
So if JUST 6% of the 500,000 current players of GW were online that would be...30,000 concurrent users...almost double EVE's concurrent users figure...and I think I'm being VERY generous to EVE.
Anyone see where my logic is flawed?
Comments
If you look at the top of the screen the is a little window. In that window you can read "European district 1" it goes on to about 30-40 different districts. Those districts are instances. Basicly GW doesn't have all users on one "shard". They are all spread on several servers.
The poster above is correct.. we all know GW is 1 big instance.. and isn't even an MMO
And thus, this thread was ended. I guess its back to the drawing board for you Hadz. Or back to killing 10 goblins in WoW, whatever floats your boat.

Getting kind of sick of people trying to bring a game that came out of nowhere from a small company and has built itself up into the #1 MMO on this website.. and hey it takes more then 5 people giving it a 10 to put it up there and keep it there.
quit it EVE is the MMO to play.. we understand some of you cannot grasp the concept of doing you want.. be who you want.. your all to focused on a set path.. thats what wow is right? you go from town to town questing until lvl 60.. then you have 2 options..
1# mindlessly farm instances over and over again
2# farm the bg
thats it nothing else to wow except that.
Guess your too brainwashed by killing lions in wow
No offense Maca
EVE IS BORING TO MOST MMORPG PLAYERS BECAUSE OF THE SLOW PACE OF THE GAME (other than PVP).
I'm sorry *you* can't grasp the concept that while EVE ***is a very good game*** it does not appeal to the ***majority*** of MMORPG players.
EVE is a "life simulator" for lack of a better term. UO was also a "life simulator". SWG started out as a "life simulator" in that the worlds were very realistic, there were no 'class' choices that stuck with you forever and you can pretty much 'do whatever' in all those titles. All those games are or were successful at what they did.
EVE is a solid title but it is NOT for everyone. It's a game for people who enjoy a very realistic universe that doesn't hand-hold them at all through the content. It is also a very slow paced game (and don't try to spin me, I have given it PLENTY of time to determine this). Any game where people's comments include:
"I like it because I can play it on my laptop while doing something else around the house"
"I like it because I can enjoy the football game on TV while I play"
etc...
Tells it all. EVE is a very very slow paced game that, while granting infinite control to the player also leaves many players feeling like the game is empty.
There's nothing wrong with EVE. It's a great game. But I am REALLY getting sick of EVE fans trying to imply that anyone who doesn't like EVE just isn't capable of rational thought.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
HEH nah the only thing that annoys me about EVE's record is they announce a new one anytime 1 more person logs in than their current record
Seeing them post a new record nearly daily is just annoying.
Great, you're over 15000 concurrent. Don't bother me again till you top 20,000... mmmmkay? I don't need to hear that you hit 15001 and then 15002 and so on. It gets old.
It's almost as annoying as the EVE fans who post in every single thread that EVE is the end all be all of MMORPG's when *most* people find it extremely boring.

As said in my last post.. thats because people want to be hand walked through a game.. told what to do, if i want that il play a single player on my xbox.
what i get sick of is the people who didn't like it bashing the game like no tomorrow and doing their down right best to bring it down.... not gonna happen.

You're dramatizing this and that's hardly the case. Most of the announcements of the concurrent users records are done within the EVE community. I can think of only 2 press releases that mentioned such record breaking events.
nevermind actually
I would say "most" MMORPG players haven't even ever heard of EVE. And while you may not like EVE players on a holy crusade (me neither btw), I don't like assumptions based on thin air.
@ OP: Get your (technical) facts sorted.

Maca,
Oddly enough I have NEVER seen a post that "bashes" eve and "tries to bring it down" like you're claiming. I've seen people do that regarding Horizons, WoW, EQ2, DAOC, SWG and numerous other titles but the WORST thing I've seen people say about EVE was:
"It's boring"
That's the ONE consistent statement by every player who doesn't like EVE. It's "boring". Not "it's a bad game" Not "it sucks" Just: "It's Boring".
You like EVE, it fits your playstyle. Insulting those who enjoy a different playstyle is just stupid and narrow minded. Kind of like most of the rest of the EVE fans that post here.
There is NOTHING WRONG WITH EVE, get that through your head. It's just fine as it is. But it will not and does not appeal to the MASSES.
*MOST* people want a game that entertains them and gives them things to do. Sure they like open ended content as WELL but EVE *only* gives open ended content. There is no middle ground. It's a game suited to avid roleplayers and people who like hyper-realistic life simulations. It is not a game suited to those who want a game to provide content for them to consume.
And thinking that wanting that from an MMORPG is wrong is bad thinking. It's not "wrong" it's just "a different playstyle".
EVE caters to a very specific set of gaming mindsets. Because of that it will often be labelled boring. Get used to it.

People who play it get into the mindset you have to mine.. not true.. i have mined only in my first week in EVE that was 2 years ago... after that first week i got myself a punisher and went on npc missions.
I couldn't decide which was more exciting in Eve: Mining, NPC missions, or traveling.
Believe me, if CCP would do anything to improve the pacing of Eve I'd be back in that game today. In concept it's an awesome game that deserves it's recognition. Very realistic, somewhat complex, great graphics, great economy, etc. Unfortunatley it's the pace of the game that bothered me. When I found myself reading, watching TV, working on projects, while playing the game, I knew it was time to give up the ghost. I even got killed a few times and I could've cared less at that point.
Having said that about pacing, Eve is still one of those games that continues to tug at my interest. I was thinking of giving the game another go during the holidays.

Hey look I did the same thing (I loathe mining).
NPC missions are "ok" the first few times. But after "rescue the damzel" for the 1000000000th time it got kinda old. Even going to another faction doesn't change the missions. There are about 10 or 11 missions of each type (kill, delivery, research, crafting). All the same. Everywhere.
Please try again. Missions are fun for a bit but they RAPIDLY get repetitive because there are so few of each type. They don't progress any kind of story line or plot. Their only purpose that I can devine is to help you raise your faction standing and make a little cash.
And mining is still the fastest way to make credits, unless you play the market.
The game is very slow paced. And PVE combat is ok but looting afterwards is just a nightmare 1 level 2 mission can take upwards of 30 minutes just to loot your kills after the fight is over (which probably took about 5-10 minutes). NOT FUN!

It's not really that 'smart people' play MMORPG's it's that the average age of an MMORPG player is in the 30's while the average age of a console gamer is in the lower 20's.
Huge difference when you start tossing us 30-somethings (and even folks in their 50's) into the mix

I had an interesting discussion with my corpmates last week on the topic of noobs and mining. Over the last few months we've had a number of new members that are also relatively new to EVE. Two of them were complaining about how boring and tedious it was to mine and build up their assests. Their real complaint was the grind for $ though. What made it interesting was that some of the other new members were avoiding the mindless grinding completely. The only real difference between these 2 groups of people were their MMO background. The 2 that were grinding away came from FFXI and WoW while the other group were playing EVE as their first MMO or came from UO after taking a multi-year break from MMOs.
The difference between both groups has raised my suspecion regarding a lot of criticism EVE has faced since the last major content patch and the subsequent increase in playerbase and attention following the patch. Could it be that the MMO industry over the last 2-3 years have grown too much vertically (in population size) and not enough horizontally (variety of design architechtures)? Is the industry so dominated by a single MMO design philosophy (level grind, crafting, directly controlled avatars, developer made quests) that the majority of the MMO population has certian sterotypes, expectations, and assumptions ingrained into their minds that hinders them from playing other MMOs that deviate from their norms?
It would be facinating if this is the case. It would also be very distrubing since I don't think the MMO market has even come close to full maturity yet and it would be way too soon for the industry to lock themselves into an unofficial set of design standards.

I'd be interested to know exactly how your 'other two' "avoided" the $ grind. Because, quite frankly, I've only found 3 ways to make money in EVE:
1) Grind mining - BORING
2) Grind missions - Ok for a while but gets REALLY repetitive
3) Play the market - ok if you don't mind LONG ASS travel times.
I did a combination of the three and still got very frustrated with the game very quickly.
Even more than the repetitive nature of the "grind" portion of play, however, I disliked the skill system. I LOVE skill based systems, don't get me wrong. But I don't like EVE's time-gated method of handling skills. I much prefer to be able to increase my skills through USE rather than selecting them and then just waiting for them to finish. (REALLY annoying on the ones that take 18 days+) I also really hated that you could only ever train 1 skill at a time. That, to me, is unrealistic. Why can't you learn to shoot missiles and improve your targetting at the same time? That makes no sense to me.
Anyway. I liked EVE but it got boring quick.

I am glad I am not the only one. I give them their full due for earning the records but they also don't mention that no other MMO has nowhere near as many "zones" as they do.
Each system seperates out the players just like a zone in any other game. When you have that many zones the higher numbers mean less since they are all spaced out over a huge world. As for as what Eve can handle in comparison to the rest, they zones start getting real shaky alot sooner then many games when they start hitting high populations in 1 system.
So while it is a remarkable achievment for them, the statistic is somewhat bogus as well. I don't feel its in perspective.

I don't like to be handwalked through a dam thing yet Eve can get VERY very dry and mind numbing. Sorry, I get tired of waiting for yet the next skill to time down quite often. And I often find myself not wanting to do anything til I have that new skill. I find the storylines in Eve very superficial, I never feel an ounce of it in the game. Most PvE is done in deadspace where it has zero effect on anything and I yet to get any feeling at all of war between any 2 races. Its all just text on a website, you can play the entire game and never get anything out of the storyline because it has zero bearing on the game.
Ya I can make my own story like in SWG, my own adventure so to speak. But when I am stuck in a spaceship 24x7 and can't actually get out and do anything, that kinda dries up the desire to roleplay.
EVE is a great game, I play it currently. 2 accounts as a matter of fact but don't sit and tell me that THE reason its not liked is because we that feel the dry and boring times in it need to be handheld through content. Thats as bad as when everyone started using the term "spoon fed" around here in regard to the WoW vs EQ II epic debates.

Are you suggesting that the MAIN reason people don't play EVE is because they are TOO carebearish and EVE is too hardcore for them, which is why they play WoW and EQ2, for an easy life.
Seriously, do you REALLY believe that?
Actually its funny you mention the hyper-realistic...
It's actually the one thing about the game that has me going insane half the time. It's not realistic at all, there are very few aspects of the game that actually are grounded in reality. Even their math is flawed alot of the time and logic. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine about EVE when I hear people talking about the attention to detail and how realistic it is.

They actually didn't have the endurance to do the mining or mission grinding either. Since they were in a corp, they decided to ask for 'corp' missions. A number of things happened:
First, the veterns would send these guys off to do errands such as make a set of bookmarks for the corp, fly a hauler to carry loot that was to be refined or sold off, act as a forward scout for corp convoy. All these 'corp' missions were rewarded with $ or some kind of equipment.
Second, whenever the older players went out into 0.0 to npc hunt or run complexes, they had the noobs tag along for the sole purpose of making life easier for the battleships by killing of the small npc ships and collecting the loot. Since the noobs were in the same gang with the vets, they were automatically getting cuts of the NPC bounties and the vets distributed the loots among the gang members.
Third, one of the noobs wanted to get involved with the market, so some of the vets and myself would give this noob our loot that we collected from NPC hunting and had him sell it on the market. This saved us time of having to research the market value of each piece of loot, transporting the loot, and setting up the sell orders. In return for selling the goods, he got a commission on each sale. The commission varied with each person he was selling for, but I was giving him 10% for each sale. That means for every 1 mil item he was selling (which are a dime a dozen in low sec and 0.0) he was getting 100k. For every 10 mil item that he sold, which was infrequent but not rare, he was getting a 1 mil cut. For a 45 day old character, that is really good money.
