Originally posted by Cerrian They actually didn't have the endurance to do the mining or mission grinding either. Since they were in a corp, they decided to ask for 'corp' missions. A number of things happened:First, the veterns would send these guys off to do errands such as make a set of bookmarks for the corp, fly a hauler to carry loot that was to be refined or sold off, act as a forward scout for corp convoy. All these 'corp' missions were rewarded with $ or some kind of equipment.Second, whenever the older players went out into 0.0 to npc hunt or run complexes, they had the noobs tag along for the sole purpose of making life easier for the battleships by killing of the small npc ships and collecting the loot. Since the noobs were in the same gang with the vets, they were automatically getting cuts of the NPC bounties and the vets distributed the loots among the gang members.Third, one of the noobs wanted to get involved with the market, so some of the vets and myself would give this noob our loot that we collected from NPC hunting and had him sell it on the market. This saved us time of having to research the market value of each piece of loot, transporting the loot, and setting up the sell orders. In return for selling the goods, he got a commission on each sale. The commission varied with each person he was selling for, but I was giving him 10% for each sale. That means for every 1 mil item he was selling (which are a dime a dozen in low sec and 0.0) he was getting 100k. For every 10 mil item that he sold, which was infrequent but not rare, he was getting a 1 mil cut. For a 45 day old character, that is really good money.
That's awesome that you folks came up with that. If I had a start like that, or even some support like that now the game would probably be alot less dry at times. However I started out abit more harshly due to the corp I got involved with, which ended up going very wrong, resulting in me having very harsh words with the founder of the corp. I am not in a corp of 4 people, we all just hang abit and do some missions because I left APOC L. After that I had a very bad taste in my mouth for the game's politics, PvP, corporations, and most other player to player related aspects of the game.

It will be interesting to see how long this record lasts once DnL is out, even it's FREE preview version (SoG), coming soon. DnL will ALSO be one server only, one persistant world.
Wow! 4 pages while I slept...and only about 4 posts on my original topic...
I think some EVE supporters are BLINDED when they say that Guild Wars doesn't count...my "technical" points were ALL correct.
FACT: Instancing does not mean sharding (if EVE has had to change their "to our knowledge" statement, then obviously they realize this)
FACT: You can PLAY (ie. group, chat, SEE) GW with anyone who owns the game!
FACT: GW obviously has more people online at one time than EVE (just through sheer number of people who own the game)
CONCLUSION: EVE's "record" is a "qualified" record at best, and NO record at worst. Plus, it's self-proclaimed, and we all know how accurate self-proclaimed recommendations generally are.
Additionally, let's say I start my session in one system and my friend starts theirs in another 1/4 of the way across the galaxy. How long does it take me to get to my friend's system (or for us to meet in the middle) in travel time? 4 or 5 hours?
The point is that if those 17000 people wanted to meet in one place they could do so. In guild wars, everything is instanced so even if they had 60205010 players on concurrently it would matter anymore then when WoW or EQ2 has 520502 players on concurrently.

Sorry? Who said that was the point? You're neatly sidestepping what, most people would agree, is the real issue with players on the same server...and that is being able to meet up with friends (WoW, EQ2 if they're on a different server you can't, plain and simple), but GW and perhaps EVE if you're willing to wait for them to get to you, you can.
Plus, when would all 17000 people want to meet up anyway, and you can't tell me if they all decided to do so that it would actually succeed...I mean if it lags with 300 in one area...how is it going to handle 17000?
In GW if you hear one of your friends is playing you can meet up with them...NO TROUBLE at all. In EVE if your friend is on the other side of the galaxy...forget it! Or maybe arrange to meet in 5 hours...5 hours where you'd be able to do almost nothing because you would be travelling the whole time.
But I guess it just gets people PO'd that some people like EVE ....
I think you have it the wrong way around. It gets EVE-lovers PO'd that some people DON'T like their game. Have a look at the posts on here and you'll see that it's not the people who DON'T like EVE that are PO'd; ALL the insults have come from EVE-lovers! People who don't like EVE just say they don't like the GAME, and possibly that it's boring, but they don't resort to insulting people that like it.
What I am SICK of is that every time an EVE-lover promotes their game they seem to insert a degrading insult to anyone who doesn't like the game too. It's self-defeating, petty, and immature...if you want us to believe that EVE has a mature and patient community...well, you could start by proving it in your posts.
My original post is just stating facts...and so far NO EVE-lover has been able to say that it was false. What I didn't realize was the EVE has limited their "record" even further by excluding instanced games from it too (no doubt because of GW). Man, I could do that with almost ANY MMOG...if you have to INVENT a record to get people to play it, your confidence in it must be pretty shaky.
(BTW...I think I'm doing as much, on here, to get people to try EVE as any published figures could. Any publicity is good publicity, the saying goes. And I don't mind at all! I have absolutely nothing against the game itself, and I hope it continues to be a success! But please, EVEers, show some sense and RESPECT and stop insulting those who don't like it).

Thats not an answer, youre just "neatly sidestepping" the question. Now why dont you answer it.
I think, even the people who don't like Eve, give credit where credit is due. Everyone's major issue is the pace of the game. Even the "fast paced" way to play Eve is slower than other MMOs. Honestly, I just didn't have the time to, or the desire, to spend forever and a day mining. Nor did I want to spend 8 actual weeks waiting on a skill to train. The only reason I even tried Eve was because I really love space sims.

Oh...and MY posts have been distasteful? I'm not the one calling people "moron", "twit", "kiddie", "impatient", "dumb"...the list goes on...just for not being totally enamoured with a game.
FACT: You can PLAY (ie. group, chat, SEE) GW with anyone who owns the game!
Incorrect! Only one mmorpg game has this, and that is Strive For Power. In all other mmorpgs, players are able to log off. Thus, even in GW, just because someone owns the game, does not mean you are 100% of the time able to chat, and play with them aka interact with their character. Because they can and will be logged off at some point.
FACT: GW obviously has more people online at one time than EVE (just through sheer number of people who own the game)
Incorrect. You yourself have made your own fact here moot, and false. Just because someone owns a game obviously means they do not necessarily play it. Millions of people own EQ. But it has roughly 200k players.
Question to you - Does GW post its number of current online players when one logs in?
If GW does not, then GW cannot enter any, any, discussion about current online players. All that can be said is "GW has an estimated [number of players] online at the same time. Based on no hard, accurate data. Since GW has not released any official figures on how many players are online at the same time."
IMHO Anarchy Online still has the record of number of players online, in the same game/gameworld/server world, at the same time. Back when AO had only two servers with no server cap. Back when AO had roughly 60k players during its first year of release. Of course, AO was sooo error ridden it was unplayable many times. The insane lag just one of many problems. AO currently has server caps, and 3 servers now.
More important than the topic of this thread is this:
Ragnarok Online probably has the record for most concurrent users with 700k on at the same exact time worldwide like a year or 2 ago; but they have official servers in every continent except Antartica.
17k really isnt that much if you ask me. In beta's I have been on there are usually maxed server to 20k people on a server at the same exact time; on far smaller universes. When you enter a town where 10k people are at, the lag gets autrocious and you get covered in a sea of Signs.

This post was meant in summary for all those who had ignored the points made in my opening post. Go back and read my opening post and tell me if I haven't been realistic with the figures I estimated there.
I haven't played every game either...I was just using the example of GW...There may even be quite a few other MMOs that could boast concurrent users on one server higher than 17,000. But, if you see the title of my post, it wasn't to prove GW had the most...it was to discuss the CLAIM that EVE makes as to it holding the record. (And yes they DO claim to hold the record...even if they ADJUST what the record actually is from time to time)
Hadz if you get overly anti-EVE you know that people are going to stop taking you seriously. You do have a decent argument though, and if you can point out an MMO that beats 17k players on 1 for sure, and not just kinda shard, then you win woohoo for you.
Looking at the EVE site, as somone else posted they refer to their own record, and not some kind of world record in the announcements. It's funny how it all gets out of control, CCP just likes to let their players know that the game is growing and suddenly it's this big deal.
In response to the upcoming "your a fanboy" from someone... I'm bored with EVE, training speed needs to be faster, I'm just going to cancel my account this month and set a LOOONG skill that way I can save myself some cash. The economy and PvP systems in place are still amazing, unique, challenging and fun but getting to them is certainly not. I'm not going to change my avatar because I think it looks cool, it's as simple as that.

Good idea. Post on eve forums. And make as much players possible on one spot....
And make sure to record this. It will be fun to see EVE servers crush and possibly even BURN !!!
p.s.
In newbie zone - where there is most players in one place in one time , lag is unberable most of the time. And here I am talking about not so many players , perhaps 100 at one time...

All people in guild wars can't meet in 1 instance either. Even if it takes 5 hours to meet your friend in Eve, you still can meet him. In GW you can't always meet your friend in the District you want too. If your friend is in European distric 32 and it's full you can't join him there. Instead you both have to go to European District 53. In Eve all player are in the same universe. If they decide to they can meet in one region, server might not handle it, but they would all be in that 1 region. Just like all players on a Wow server can meet in 1 place. In GW all the players can NEVER be in the same place, because every District has a hardware limit of 100 people or so.
The day when GW starts to show how many players are on your current shard/server this discussion can be based on facts and hard numbers. EVE is one of the few games, where you see how many players are online on the server - I know no other major mmo (correct me if there is one) that shows you the current number of players on your server. If that changes the claim of EVE (which based on up to todays information is correct) can be discussed again, until then its only theorizing and senseless bashing, by EVE lovers and EVE "critics".
