You HAVE to be a Jedi, end of discussion. Sure a Jedi character would be great but I think it'd get pretty boring being only Jedi's and kind of takes away from the mystery of the Jedi. What if I just wanted to be a stormtrooper? Or just a farmer? Or just a pilot ferrying people here and there? Or whatever? No I had to be a Jedi, and I did not like being pigeon holed into working to that sole goal. I might as well play the other Star Wars games that let me do that for a one time payment of $40-50.
Actually I have no idea why the commercial said that. Jedi is a starter profession and thats all, you cannot become one unless you pick that "iconic" (grits his teeth having to use that word) profession.

I'm guessing about 8 out of every 10 remaining players is playing a jedi. Is that about right?
Makes the world sort of like that old Monty Python skecth, "Bicycle Repairman." Everone's walking around in Superman suits, then when one falls off his bike, they say "looks like a job for--Bicycle Repairman!" Then one of the Supermen changes out of his Super suit into grubby overalls and one of those little British worker's caps, and repairs it while all the Supermen marvel.
For Supermen read Jedi. For Bicycle Repairman, read the one remaining crafter on each server.
I dunno. I think the game will continue on life support for quite a while, if nothing else. Sony and LA have deep pockets, and they're unlikely to kill the game and admit they were wrong with the NGE, at least not right away. They'll at least wait for the hubbub to die down before doing it. And who knows? It may be a big hit with new gamers. Even some vets seem to like it, from the posts here on the boards. Like a lot of vets, I'm not touching it because it's not the game I bought and loved, and I also really object to how SOE/LA handled the switchout. I think just about everyone agrees that the way they did this was about as bad as possible, regardless of what they think of the game itself.
Anyway, it's time to let go and move on to something else. Let the ones who like it, play it; the rest of us should find a new game.

MmM, from what I am seeing about half actually. And I beleive alot of them are doing it simply because they don't care and don't take the game seriously anymore. Just take whats the most fun and don't care about the roleplay aspect of it or the community aspect of it because you have no idea what is going to be changed or re-done next.

It couldn't be because people actually just wanted to be jedi from the start. Might not like the fact that people actually LIKE Jedi instead of some robot building mechanic... oh well.
I mean after all the game is called Star Wars... you know, jedi and all that. Think when they make a game about Lord of the Rings people are gonna want to be Farmer Maggot? Hell no.
It's a game, suspend your disbelief and just cope with it. I mean if you can deal with the fact you can space travel millions of miles in seconds or laser swords you can deal with that.
This is one thing I really hate about mmos to date. People think that not everyone can be a hero or have a nice sword or armor piece or whatever that only a "select few" should have it. Get real people, this is a massive game and each player can do the same thing you can. If more than 2 people have the "elite" weapon doesn't mean that the world is coming to an end and things are to easy. People have to realize that this is a world that has thousands of heros and the actual movie only had a few. You cannot force people to NOT be a hero and expect them to enjoy the game. This goes for anything, including games like WoW and EQ.

So let me get this straight, there is only 2 level's of people in star wars; jedi and non-jedi trash?
Han Solo wasn't inspiring to anyone when the original movies came out? Now granted I am sure there are quite a few that solely got into it because they wanted a glowie stick and another game where they can wield the force. I never said EVERYONE did it for those reasons so I am not sure what your attempt at a point is other then everyone should be a jedi and we should all running around with our lightsabers because that was the only hero of the saga.

Your assumptions are way off base on costs to run the game. They make a HUGE profit off that monthly fee.
I didn't say they didn't make a profit. I said that you weren't paying $15 a month for content - content comes out of a different budget. You also aren't considering the cost of tech support and consumer relations for literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of players spread across a dozen server clusters speaking multiple different languages. You aren't considering the guys who make the web pages and front ends for the billing system, or the people who sift through what are undoubtedly thousands of support emails a day, the guys who maintain the ticketing system and internal email servers, the cost of liscensing software, profit sharing with LucasArts, licensing the forum software and paying for maintenence, and a thousand other little ongoing costs that don't go away.
Typical game develop doesn't tend to have a lot of these things, and those that they do have are included in the development cost of the game (several million dollars is a polite estimate). Once the game is done and out the door, you work on the next game, and roll those costs into the new development cost (or you go out of business after three games like most companies in the game industry). But when you don't get that several million dollars every year to develop something, those costs need to be paid for from somewhere, and the ongoing nature of a live game means that costs that would've gone away (ie a full QA team) will be sticking around a lot longer.
I'm not saying they aren't making profit. Of course they are. But they aren't making a profit off YOU. It greatly depends on the player. Some are leeching more than $15 worth of service a month, some aren't. It's only when you've got thousands of players that the averages start to work out in your favor. If anything, it's the casual players that make the most profit for subscription based games, and they don't have a problem with the NGE.
As for my technical background, I know my way around game development.
Wow this thread really blew up lol know what I find funny? All anyone did before the NGE is grind. Grinding skill boxes endlessly on Dantooine killing bols. And new that the NGE is here all the people who don't like it say "There is NO content from level 30-90! All you can do is grind!" Well just wth were you doing before the NGE??? Grinding!! LOL

What in the world are you talking about? I don't recall everyone grinding when I was playing unless they wanted jedi. Pre-CU the "grind" was about 2 weeks for 2.5 professions. After the CU alittle bit longer but hardly a "grind" like lineage II or any other hard leveling MMO.
Your still stuck on the broken quest thing? I don't think that many people even brought up broken content as some huge deal, you sure seem to be trying to push it as being a big issue though.

Ok, your own post is proof of how much you know. Go through the email support system and just see how much effort SOE has put into it. You have to get past 2 autoresponder FAQ letters before you can even get to a real support staff explaining what to try before continueing and speaking to a real tech, and then after going through all that and issueing a second email saying none of that worked you get to wait about a week (or more) to get your answer. Oh ya, they have a HUGE investment in customer support.
The in-game CS staff is almost nil and they as well answer with generic template message that don't answer your query at all most the time and then close your ticket so you have to go through the trouble of issueing a new one before you can once again address the same problem with them.
So since SOE hasn't started working on SWG 2 yet, where is all that extra money that you say they should be rolling into it going?
You really are the ideal client for a business, and I mean that.
And you never answered me the last time, I thought you weren't posting here anymore?

That's about the most short sighted repsonse I have seen today....and I have been on the SWG boards even.
About the last thing I had time for was killing bols or pickets. I ran quests. I PVPed. I worked on loot for crafters in my guild. If I was killing bols, it was for meat to give to the guild chef. Grinding was never the point in the game. It was how you played after you leveled that made the game. I was too busy running a guild. Too busy running a Metropolitan city. Too busy planning events. Too busy helping my crafters. Too busy joining guys in PVP. Too buy..far too busy to grind Bols. Furthermore, there were far better ways to grind when I did need to.
But heck..what do I..a 2.1/2 year vet of SWG, playing the game since Beta 3 almost daily know about the game I spent five thousand plus hours in compared to you?
Originally posted by Squidi I said the anti-NGE guys were dicks, not idiots, and that their need to brow beat anybody who has an informed positive opinion on NGE makes it impossible for honest discourse to take place, leading me to not post my opinions on the NGE (this was in a thread about why there weren't more positive comments on the NGE, I believe). These are not my opinions on the NGE, but insight into how the game industry works, and whether you like or don't like the NGE will not affect these facts. I also happen to be considerably more knowledgeable in these matters, so whatever moronic brow beating may be attempted will only result in the poster looking like a dumb ass with a chip on his shoulder.
As someone who has been in the gaming industry for nearly 20 years and it being where I made a living for about 7 of those years....I would advise you look back over your post before calling anyone else names just because they don't like the NGE. This one paragraph alone establishes that you also fall into the class you lumped everyone else in with your last sentance.

I only called the people who engaged in pro-NGE dicks. If you do not like the NGE, that's fine with me so long as you can have a tempered discussion on the matter without trolling or otherwise forcing your opinion on others. The NGE is such that there is plenty of foundation for an educated for or against vote. My complaint comes from the fact that you can't state a pro-NGE opinion without getting flamed for it. What can I say? I'm against fascism.
My comments about being more knowledgeable were in contrast to people who said that they paid $15 a month and deserved what they didn't pay for or that SOE is rolling in cash made by stepping on the heads of SWG playerbase. If I have said anything that is incorrect, or made any speculation that is not possible, feel free to call me on it.
i disagree completely. The NGE is hardly begun in its implementation. To me, without them releasing it with the immersion and Star Wars lore that it promised, it was comparable to Horizons releasing their "Be the Dragon" game without there actually being flying dragons yet.
It may be that it's the greatest thing since Jesus. But there is no way to know, because it's not done yet, it's totally bugged, and the developers refuse to explain their 'vision'. So, nobody can make a really educated guess at this point. Not enough info.

It may have hardly begun its implementation, but how many players are paying to beta test the game? This should never have been released/ put live in the current state.

Maybe you should stick to something more along those lines rather than what you did say.
I honestly can't say I am happy about the NGE. Its what I did most every night for 2 1/2 years. Its what many did for 2 1/2 years. Can you really be all that surprised that there is such a strong reaction to it? Emotions are high. Tension is great. A lot of people feel betrayed by SOE for pulling a stunt like this. I would be willing to bet most are jeleous that anyone is enjoying the game they once enjoyed and suddenly lost.
Think of it like this. Pizza...pepporoni. Suddenly, because the pizza shop did some surveys..they remove the pepporoni and replaced it with veggies. Sure people like that....doesn't mean most do...and naturally...you aren't going to be too happy eating that veggie pizza..and some will refuse to and be mad that they can't eat and have to go hungrey all the while watching others happy that the meat is gone and the pizza is free to be "fresh". Now..they protest and want the pepporoni back. They want to know why the veggies couldnt have just been added, why replace what was good when it could have been added and been more?
Why couldn't the good parts of the NGE have been added with the current game? Why did it have to totally replace? That's what has a lot of people ultimately mad imo.
It boggles my mind how anybody can like this game as it is now...during the CU, I only played it because it was part of all access pass...i did enjoy the time i did play because of the free form sandbox play and the ease with which you could dual class...now it has more bugs than I have ever seen in a game! I logged on the other day to see how it was going(and since i dont really pay for it anyways)...my lvl 4 easily defeted lvl 12 mobs(when some bug didnt get me killed), but yet got crap xp...it was totally awful...I will give it another month and try my main respeced to commando(once they turn back on hvy weapons) or spy(if they ever get stealth working right)...but until then, i am telling everyone to stay the hell away from this pile of crap!
What is the point of deleting entire posts due to one word (out of many) when you could've just changed "dicks" to "dweebs" or something less offensive? More importantly, what is accomplished by deleting the post only to leave it quoted in full in the next few posts? And am I the only one who thinks that calling trolls "dicks" is slightly less offensive than posting John Smedley's home phone number, which is not particularly hidden and has yet to be removed? This is some seriously f**ked up moderating (I've seen others use "f**ked up" as written, so I know I'm safe on that one). Anyway...

I do not disagree. I think this is exactly the problem. Of course, the issue becomes where do we go from here? These people are upset. They are taking it out on the wrong people and through the wrong actions. I think we passed the "understanding" moratorium three weeks ago and now we just need to start kicking their asses.
Now..they protest and want the pepporoni back. They want to know why the veggies couldnt have just been added, why replace what was good when it could have been added and been more?
No, the don't protest. They find a different pizza joint or even try the veggies and see if it is still good, albeit in a different way. I've NEVER seen someone protest a change in menu. I didn't see people hanging around outside McDonalds when the McRib was gone. I personally was saddened when Taco Bell stopped doing the Cheesy Gordita Crunch, but I didn't call the manager's home phone number and leave threats on his answering machine.
It is OKAY to be upset, but to express this anger through such utter irresponsible and destructive means is way past the point where I'm willing to give anyone leeway. The second you stop being a rational correspondant and start being a troll is the SECOND your opinion stops being important.
Why couldn't the good parts of the NGE have been added with the current game? Why did it have to totally replace? That's what has a lot of people ultimately mad imo.
Because people disagree on what the good parts are (I like the combat system, not everybody does), and many of the changes are incompatible with whatever system it replaces. The 9 profession system is a good idea, and in time it will pay off. But that is completely incompatible with the way merchants and crafting were set up previously. You can't have one and not the other. You'd prefer some of the changes, but nobody can agree on which changes.
And at this point, over a month after the NGE was announced, it is way past the point where calls for rollbacks should be happening. The NGE has happened. This will not change. Either you get used to this and help make the NGE part of a brighter future for SWG or you leave the game. Sitting in forums and complaining about it's not going to make any difference at this point.

first of all let me say these were both very good posts
personally i hate the NGE luckly my account died in november so i didnt have to waste money on something i dont like
i dont want this to sound like a flame or an insult in any way but when u said stay to make the NGE a better game is like having false hope or like fighting a lost cause we have all seen what SoEs customer service is like and that they really pay almost no attention to the community so staying with the game in hope of making it better seems like a waste of money to me which is why my account is now gone and i will never go back to swg EVER or any SoE/LA mmos (if there are any more)
anyway heres some stuff that i absolutely hate about the NGE that made me quit....
1) The newb players that join and play the tutorial during the free trial or beginning stages of play are literally blinded to what the game is really like. they make the beginning seem so realistic and so in depth that they try to trap ppl into paying for long subscribtions but once they get out of the newb stages the quickly find out the REAL swg is a pile of crap (except in some ppls opinions).
2) Combat is completely generic and professions seem like and empty shell of what they once were.... where there was a huge diversity in what specials ppl could use and what states they would apply ect ect... now the moves are just copied and supposedly made more powerful (which seemed like nothing really happened to them) AND most of the professions specials were bugged and specials didnt even work.
3) Crafting is completely dead no matter what anyone says..... the no decay crap completely killed crafting... there is absolutely no reason to craft anymore except MAYBE furniture (which is about NO income) or maybe foods, other than that no one is going to be doing any crafting because everything anyone needs can now be looted... even space parts (for newbs) architecht is gone because ppl wont be crafting harvestors anymore because theres no one around to craft..... the occasional person will need a house now and then but that will do nothing to keep the economy alive.
I was enjoying SWG before the NGE. Combat was alot better pre NGE. SOE says the NGE is fast paced, its not realy fast paced combat. Pre NGE was alot more fast paced and action packed
having to repedly click you're mouse button and constently be moving you're mouse arrow to keep it on target so you can attack doesn't make a game Action packed and fast paced.
Makeing so you run faster and so NPCS run 3x faster then you, doesn't make a game action packed and fast pace combat.
I as well have seen mass number of people leaving SWG. Everyone I knew all of my friends from SWG have left my Friends list after NGE was always empty no online people.
I do believe that at this rate SWG will eventuly have to close its servers unless as SOE claims is not happening, happens and it goes consel. but even then it might not do so well.
Sure some people will still play SWG it is going to be mostly the fanboys and people that don't know what a good quality game is. But even with people still playing if it doesn't pay enough SOE will eventuly shut it down.

QFE!!!
My stance on the NGE is that as a game it is an improvement. Simply because leveling through quests is more enjoyable. The combat I'm somewhat indifferent on, although with preferring melee characters the CU was (for my taste) a better system. If they address melee targeting issues and add in more variations in specials then my option will change, as I prefer the faster pace of the NGE. My sole issue with the NGE is that its been released in a by far incomplete state.
As for grinding, personally never done it. My template had been the same since release and only changed with respecs after the CU and NGE. I spent most of my time supporting my guild, by obtaining resources for the crafters, doing guild hunts, helping others obtain boxes, helping with city management and development and trying to loot rares. So far the NGE has killed all that, all be it mostly because populations have dropped so much.
Originally posted by anarchyart You don't have to keep clicking, you can just hold the button down.
Hate to break it to you, but holding the button down slows your rate of fire and also has to be reset each time the pointer moves off the target. If you dueled me and held the button down...you would be dead long before I was worried about healing. Much to learn of the NGE you have.
You must be using a slow weapon if clicking is faster than holding the mouse button down. Either that or lighting reflexes.
Anyway, agree in PvP or against a mob with the crazed kiting AI its not as straight forward as holding the button down. Although its certainly not constant clicking, which I feel was more his point.

Grinding!! LOL
And lots of the quest DO work from level 30+.
there IS a game after lvl 30 i know im lvl 31. people just need to LOOK FOR IT!
theres quest all over if they looked and there is tons of lvl 30 ish MOBs to kill.
Death to the rebels...LONG LIVE THE EMPIRE

As someone who has been in the gaming industry for nearly 20 years and it being where I made a living for about 7 of those years....I would advise you look back over your post before calling anyone else names just because they don't like the NGE. This one paragraph alone establishes that you also fall into the class you lumped everyone else in with your last sentance.

Anyway...
Does this mean that you want another 2 1/2 years of the same old stuff? I do not disagree. I think this is exactly the problem. Of course, the issue becomes where do we go from here? These people are upset. They are taking it out on the wrong people and through the wrong actions. I think we passed the "understanding" moratorium three weeks ago and now we just need to start kicking their asses.

3) Crafting is completely dead no matter what anyone says..... the no decay crap completely killed crafting... there is absolutely no reason to craft anymore except MAYBE furniture (which is about NO income) or maybe foods, other than that no one is going to be doing any crafting because everything anyone needs can now be looted... even space parts (for newbs) architecht is gone because ppl wont be crafting harvestors anymore because theres no one around to craft..... the occasional person will need a house now and then but that will do nothing to keep the economy alive.
anyway thats about it
~ArTIFacT~
AS a EX SWG member. I left after the NGE.
QFE!!!
