I just wanted to say that I have played both WoW and EVE, and i voted for EVE because I simply find it to be a better game. It's a more mature game, you do basically whatever you want, and you're not forced into being like everyone else.
Those are just my thoughts anyways. Personally I'll be playing Auto Assault when it comes out, though I've been considering reactivating my eve account, heh.

It wouldn't let me edit my post, sorry for the 2nd one.
I just wanted to point out that the reason any game won was because they got more votes, simple as that. If you voted for a game and it didn't win, more people voted against you. It doesn't mean your game is bad, just that more people (that voted) liked another one better.

I agree with most winners except best game. Eve cannot be a best game because it fits only a very specific player profile. I think WoW at best or EQ2 at worse should be best game because they fit general MMORPG player profile, they are fit for the masses. Dont take me wrong, I like Eve, but i cant play it for long, its too grinding for me, takes too long to accomplish anything major, takes to long to get to the juicy part. With WoW and EQ2 you get into action right away. Just another reason not to trust online polls 100%
If you want a more precise poll, just read the subscribtion numbers, the best game will have the most number of active players. 70k is nowhere near the 5 million (according to WoW press release, 5 mil IS the amount of active player accounts, NOT the total amount of game copies sold).
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
I would agree on almost all counts but..... Eve best graphics?
Sorry but you are having a laugh
Eve's graphics don't even come close to the graphics in EQ2 and this is an active Eve player for the last two years saying this. Sure their are some great backdrops, some of the ship designes look a bit old now but really EQ2 should have won this hands down.

I personaly like graphics in Eve, they are high quality, high definition and look real. unfortunately, EQ2 graphics dont look real in some cases (character models look like plastic doll). Although I was very impressed with textures in EQ2, top of the line high definition there, no questions. I just wish they had more varieties. Its hard to say whos graphics are better because most people who vote here arent technical, so they vote on whos graphics look prettier. Perhaps if there is another vote in the future, we should ask 2 questions: What game has most appealing graphics visually (prettiest graphics) and What game uses most up-to-date graphics technologies. From this perspective, I think EQ2 has best technical graphics becuase they use very high definition bumps and textures, but i personaly dont find EQ2 graphics pretty. In that perspective Eve graphics are definitely prettier.

MMORPGs are NOT about "fitting a general profile" or how long it takes to get to "the juicy part" (i.e. looking for that flash of instant gratification in your first 2 days of playing) but about team work, player interaction, game depth, and freedom to explore ... to make more of the game and do more in the game (without stooping to exploits) than the game designers can foresee ... to do more than camp a spawn or grind materials for crafting, instead to make it a reason to control an area and make it your home ... to do more than just zerg or war on others, instead to use such methods as well as guerrilla warfare and covert ops to help defend your chosen home ... to have PvP with meaning, with pain, with purpose and to protect those that wish to not partake, supporting both styles in a dynamic universe ... to make PvP mean more than the biggest sword / gun / ship / fist, instead to make it a part of everything in the game. And finally to do all of this in one, non sharded, gaming world which in turn makes a stronger game community because we have no technological limits or need to make an character on 'xyz' server to do any of the above with others we meet in the community outside of the gaming world.
EVE does it, it breaks the mold that the mega game producers want to use to make cookie cutter games like WoW and EQ ... and the players out there know it and that is why it won.

Theres nothing wrong with a friendly discussion. Everyone can express their pro or con opinions about any subject, as long as they post polite and mature post with constructive arguments. People voted Eve to be best game, I disagree so I post my arguments why I think its not the best game. I know there wont be a revote, and Im not trying to initiate one, just expressing my point of view. Same with graphics, I agree with the vote, but some people do not, and as long as there is more then "EVE GRAPHICS SUX" message in his post, I will discuss and argue about that case.
Back to the topic, Funjifore is correct, Eve graphics look nice up close as well. I havent found any graphics flaws.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
That's a clear blow to those saying years ago that the server would never reach 10'000 concurrents users.
Opposed to $ making corp, CCP has a vision and they are doing it. No need for sequel when the original is just so damn good, and extended at no charge.
I would explain a life in a MMORPG like this.
EVE: -You start, no ideas of what to do. -Hard to learn since there is so much stuff to understand. -You do missions and they start to repeat themselves (even if ccp is strongly working on it). -When you start to understand, you realise that it's the best since you can do anything you want and you have complete freedom of what you do and even how you do it.
Others -You start, easy and linear. -Easy to understand, you learn everything quite fast. -You are free to try all the new stuff that is put in front of you (as the rest of the player base is, AT the same time). -You soon discover that it's boring to kill the same stuff over and over again to reach a new option that will allow you to grind even more.
In Eve, you don't need to grind but you are free enough to do it if you desperately choose to.
EvE deserved all the awards, i was fearing that WoW will get them cause its such a popular game with people (especially for those who never tryied a MMO before) , but it seams that people voted with their heads
I always had faith that all the hard work, free expansion, and updates that CCP gave out on a daily basis would pay off for them. This clearly shows it, their fanbase is loyal, and the geekiest of geeks. I believe this game did so well also on the mass Exodus from Star Wars Galaxies. Bringing in thousands of new players to the ranks.
Thank you Sony for only increasing your competition, i'm glad they didnt win a SINGLE award, they most certainly dont deserve it, pretty weird how Eq2's Graphics FAR SURPASS Eve's on a polygon scale. Yet because people were so fed up with SOE's horrible tactics, they voted for another company, in fact im pretty sure they woulda voted OGRE ISLAND as having better graphics than any Sony Title game on the market. God knows i did, Glad to see CCP won all of these awards. Well deserved.
I have never played EvE, so I wont comment on much, but I can say that it has the worst tutorial I have ever seen for a MMO. They should really update it (if they haven't already) to...not suck so much, for the lack of a better phrase. It was so horrible I can't even comment on gameplay aspects because, if they even showed any, I just exited after it got to a certain point of boredom.
WoW definatly deserves the best PvE slot, no doubt about that. If they would just have cross server Battlegrounds they would have a decent PvP shot, but right now the queues just ruin it. Just qurious though, was Shadowbane on the list at all? I would assume it wasn't, but back in it's day (I should probably update my sig) it had the best PvP hands down.
All in all this proves only that people voted for EvE more then anything else. Does that mean it's the best? No. Does it mean it has a loyal fanbase? Yes. Could it be the best? Sure. Is it? Not in my opinion, but then again I didn't vote.

Before you tell someone to seek out professional help, think about what you are saying. You are saying "I dont care care what 5 million people think, I think Eve is the best so THEY are wrong".. This is ignorance talking. For the most part, Eve reaches its maximum reward at the latter stage, when you have established yourself in the universe, you have credits, good corp, lots of money, raised your skills to pilot best of the best ship, and you have blueprints for that super duper ship that no other corp has. This is all fine but it takes literaly months of real time gameplay, and i mean 5-10 hours per day gameplay to reach that spot. In between, you grind, you try to make your living, you cant realy PvP since you can loose your ship and everything you worked for the last month if you get ganked by 2 15 year olds with bad attitude. Now just becuase you like Eve, dont assume its the best game. Its the best game for YOU maybe, but not so many others. If it were best game for most people, Eve would have 5 million active subscribers.
And yes, I think whatever game has most active subscribers (not counting free games) is better game. I have a trust in human beings, I think people wouldnt pay to play a game they do not enjoy. Even is fun game, but you need to invest a LOT of real life time to get to the realy fun part. You have to get through a lot of grinding, traveling, raising skills which you cannot speed up, if it says you need 1 month to raise your specific skill, it will take 1 real life month. Im sorry I offended your fanboism, but you need to cool off before posting such posts. And before you brand me with fanboism, I dont play any MMORPG atm - even though WoW is best in a sense "get in - start having fun right away", even that game takes too much time for a working man with tight schedule. if i were to start playing Eve, id have to drop my work, stop having personal life, just like what EQ1 did to me.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

tuttorial have changed like 8 times no matter what is the tutorial eve always changing with all this new ships and the expasions... 3 years i play and i have not learn more than 70% of the game
I played Eve awhile back. Just not my cup of tea. While I apreciate some of the things the game offers, I just don't have the time that one must invest in order to make any progress.
Hilarious thread, very fun to read. Eve fans getting their hackles up defending their game and some haters trying to cry foul.
Fact is it is a Readers choice award, and the readers have spoken. Congrats to EVE fans for hoisting their game up for more of the world to see. WoW truly does have some great PVE also. Ryzom deserves every accolade it gets, it's just a very special game.
Biggest suprise obviously is Dungeons and Dragons Online, winning on sheer name recognition.
I'm happiest that Vanguard came in last on most anticipated. I just don't want the average gamer even corrupting the sanctity of it.
Well I've played eve trial twice. First time when the game launched. I thought the game sucked then for the same reasons you think it sucks now. "Hard to get in", complex, long time afk on auto. Didn't even finish the trial... After a long time I heard there was another trial and decided to check it again. But since I had a bad experience, I decided to read the game mechanics to play it the way it was meant to be played. This time I really enjoyed it. Didn't do 10% of the games possibilities and I want more. Really hard to play and it's not for everyone... But it has by far the best game experience and immersion once you get inside it. But the point it's hard to get it. One of the great points in my opinion is that you don'yt have to spend 8 hours logged/day to have a nice character. The game makes it slow paced for everyone so if I log a few hours (I have to work also...) each day AND use my brain i can become a much better player than someone who just wants to kill things 8 hours a day. Some guys like soccer, some guys like chess, this doesn't mean one or the other sucks...
Ps: I've also played WoW, SWG. WoW is also a great game, but it didn't deliver me the immersion i need to pay to play.
I haven't played EVE... but I have played WoW and EQ2... how WoW is even close to EQ2 in the Graphics vote just completely invalidates the awards... This clear bias to a title name basically removes credibility from all the awards...sorry...
Ok firstly I didn't vote in this but if I had then I would have voted for Eve as much as possible and just to clarify:
1. I have played video games for years and years and years; 2. I have played MMORPG's for years; and 3. I played WoW for one day and deleted it from my computer (not because I hate the game its just not my cup of tea).
I don't know CCP very well yet, but any dealings I have had with the volunteers that work for them have been amazingly helpful. Yes they actually have people who help you learn this game because guys it ain't easy, its rich and complicated and oh so yummy. So yes they are better than those lovelys over at SE or at Blizzard because honestly I haven't talked to anyone affiated with either of those two companies. And yet within minutes of logging on to Eve I had someone say "Hi and welcome and if you have any problems let me know".
The graphics? Hmmm well I have never ever played a RPG like Eve. I don't even feel the need to role play because quite simply I'm there and its as real as you get. This is the most emersive game I have ever played. I panic when rats or pirates enter a system when I am mining, I scream when my ship gets blown up and I'm not gonna say what happens when I wake up in my clone. In other words I feel this game. That is why it wins on graphics in my book because it sucks you in and you are there looking at this amazing planet under you just enjoying the view. It makes you believe.
PVP um well its insane and honestly it scares me to death. Yes this is a game where you have to use your brain. It doesn't matter how big your guns are, if you are too slow you are toast. But what I love most of all is that in this universe Karmah is key.
So for me this is the best game, the game that I want to spend the time on. For me I likened it to the old checkers vs. chess debate. They are both fun it just depends on what you want. I have played games for years and finally I have found what I want.
Originally posted by Herithius I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the last 14 pages, but on the Eve Online website they specifically told their players about these awards and asked them to vote. That would be the most obvious reason why Eve Online claimed the awards. If WoW, EQ2 or L2 officially told their players about the awards and asked them to vote, they probably would have won too. They probably just didn't care as much. Not to take anything away from Eve, but it has quite the small subscription base compared to other mmorpgs for the simple reason most don't care to play it. Why? Because most don't think its a game worth buying. Thats not stab at Eve, just a point of fact. Oh well, the awards probably meant he most to Eve Online so props to them.
There was 1 forum post telling players of the nomination as far as i know.
And NEVER did CCP say "please vote"
Also, i would doubt there was no post like it on the WoW boards..
edit @ the_hanz
howcome i never heard of you?
Which brings me to another point: because eve is all in one server and the community is so tightknit: fame is possible in the game Thats a major draw for me
My 2 cents... I find it interesting to look at the parallels between Eve and SoR.
Both have:
* Almost non-existent quests beyone vanilla fedex or bounty runs.
* Massive skill trees and a real focus on skills and crafting.
* The requirement that a player get off their butt, go out and explore and actively look for something to do.
* Deep technical play and a steep learning curve. This makes them both appeal to a more mature player base.
* A focus on social interaction to the point that its required to get anything done. Unfriendly players get weeded out real fast because if you cant cooperate and interact with others, there is pretty much no way to advance very far in the game.
* A small, but very loyal subscriber base and thus a relatively better relationship between the devs and the players than elsewhere.
* A much more complex and realistic world than other MMOs present. SoR has flocking, herding, migration patterns, seasons, etc. Eve has an incredible NPC population and they keep adding more kinds of objects to the universe. In both worlds you can just explore and look at the sights for longer than you would think possible.
Its also interesting that while Eve obviously had a huge fan turnout and this thread grows quite long, SoR was nominated for best story but the forum over there is relatively empty.

Instant gratification is NOT a mark of a good MMORPG ... you sir, need professional help.
To even type the above shows a lack of understand of the foundations of MMORPGs on a massive scale. Your ignorance should be used as a printed example of a fanboi gone horribly insane.
Peace.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

tuttorial have changed like 8 times
no matter what is the tutorial
eve always changing with all this new ships and the expasions... 3 years i play and i have not learn more than 70% of the game
I played Eve awhile back. Just not my cup of tea. While I apreciate some of the things the game offers, I just don't have the time that one must invest in order to make any progress.
Anyway, gratz CCP.

Ok firstly I didn't vote in this but if I had then I would have voted for Eve as much as possible and just to clarify:
1. I have played video games for years and years and years;
2. I have played MMORPG's for years; and
I want EVE.
