Girl Gamers

Hey ladies, I'm a girl gamer and of course- I find myself in a world of males. I'd say at least once a day I either question my self, or get questioned by my male counterparts about WHY I'm a girl gamer. For the record I'm a pretty normal girl. I don't have any social disorders, i'm not a humpback, I live in exciting southern California where there's tons to do, and I was even a cheerleader in high school. I began playing MMORPGs about 3 years ago after learning about them from a coworker. Now I wouldn't give them up for the world. So my question is WHY do other girls game, What games are your favorites and what has your experiences been like in a world where your surrounded by testosterone and violence?

hi Kaiana!  I'm also a girl gamer, I started playing mmorpgs about 5 years ago when I was in highschool.  (I was also a cheerleader XD)   I don't know if many girls post on this board though... i've never posted, I just lurk, hehe.

I've always been addicted to games since I was a little kid (mostly fighting games and RPGs) and then I fell in love with the internet so of course MMORPGs are the best thing ever!  I love making friends online but being a girl makes it difficult... since most of the other players are guys.  When I get asked if i'm a girl I don't feel like I should have to lie, but when I say yes I get one of the following replies:

    1) liar

    2) lol, u must be really ugly!

but you can't really expect to be treated like a human being online anyway so i'm used to it.

Some of the mmorpgs i've played:  Final Fantasy XI, Phantasy Star Online (if Guild Wars counts than so does this, lol), Guild Wars, Star WarsG, Saga of Ryzom, Everquest 2, Ragnarok Online, Ashrons Call 2, Lineage 2

I really got burnt out on WoW, but it was neat to see so many other girls on a mmorpg, I mean we've always been there but not in such big numbers.

if anyone say u are ugly than he is idiot, i dunno why anyone will say something about that.
now, i myself tend to go and say Liar, mostly becouse there are lots of males out there that pretend to be "Girls" to get free stuff, and its work for them.

but when i played EQ2, in my guild alone i had 6 Females ranging from all ages, and i was in a small guild (i guess thats why there was so many in there).
some of the girls from my guil were Hardcores while others was casuals.
but now there are lot more girls playing than before, even in my bf1942 (fps game) clan i had 2 girls so just continue to play games and dont give a shit for how someone react for u being a girl.

just wanted to comment on that.

Im amazed that you're surprised at the respones you get. Like the two posters above me, the majority of the MMO playerbase are somewhere around 12-16 year old nerds with limited social experience.

    oh Ps:

"..and what has your experiences been like in a world where your surrounded by testosterone and violence?"

...this last piece of grammatical oddity made me think of the phrase "projectile vomit".

    That is all.

shocked if i see one of these kids per month :)

I game with girls all of the time.  Some of my favorite people to play with are female, and I don't hit on them.

I always hear girls complain about getting hit on, called ugly without any physicaly evidence, or accused of being a liar.  But I've never done/witnessed that myself.  In The Matrix Online I was in one of the largest Machine factions and we had quite a number of girls.  There's still plenty last time I was there (today...)  They're treated equally and with respect.

I think it's just a matter of picking your friends.  Much like real life, except you have to be more careful.  If within the first day of gaming with someone they start asking if you're female and single and what not...it's time to go your seperate ways.  Find people who just don't ask.  If it's just brought up in random conversation, fine.

You shouldn't HAVE to keep it to yourself, but unfortunately sometimes it's the best thing to do.

There are some things the internet just can't handle.  The Female is one of them.

I am neither a girl nor a cheerleader, I am sad about both accounts. Anyways I've been playin MMO's since SWG launched (R.I.P. SWG) and have spent the majority of my time grinding with my female friends ... wait that sounds bad. Moving along, even with them the old joke is that there are no women on the internet just guys with pink font. More power to you ladies we need deeper roots in the world and lets face it little gamers cannot be made with a virtual world full of dudes.

I have an issue with about 80% of girl gamers I know. No, I'm not gay. It has nothing to do with me disliking girls, or even anything that the girls themselves do. My problem is that any MMO, it seems the girl gamers, the ones everyone knows for sure are a girl... cause bullshit. They bring in the whole lame ass RP element of "He's my grandma, he's my cousin, he's my brother." In which your grandpa ends up being your cousin's pet cat.

My biggest issue really though, is that any guild I'm ever in, in any MMO has the stereotype female in it. Let me describe this stereotype female.
    1. Wants everyone to like her, or she's unpleasant.
    2. Is always an officer.
2a. Is an officer because she's a female and the guild leader wants to see her breasts on her webcam.
2b. Is an officer because the guild leader is still baffled by the existance of females.

I always end up really close with these players. I don't do the usual super respectful, treat girls better bla bla crap. I'm straight up, honest, and kid around with them. They love me for this. Of course all the MEN in the guild call me disrepectful, and immature, yaddya.

I guess my beef isn't with girl gamers. It's with the guys that can't seem to handle the girl gamers.

Plus, I play video games to escape from girls emotional crap. Seeing it in my escape from life is frightens me. I might have to turn to methamphetamines next! ::::03::

choosing officers in guilds is always politics. one way or another so it doesnt really matter

and not all girl gamers "show their breasts on webcams"

in fact the worst your average girl gamer will do is be extra nice and recieve favors from guy gamers.

and i dont like all the chovanistic idiotic guy gamers who assume that emotions are female by nature and will avoid them at all costs by blowing stuff up in games.

both are stereotypes expressed by those that dont recognize the compexity of a good MMO's social aspect.

please read the prince and then post again.

Okay. First off, I've seen plenty of girl gamers breasts on webcam. iro.ragnarokonline.com = tons of female players. Girls will do anything for money in cyberspace too. ;)

Second off, playing video games to escape the real world is a very good reason to play video games.

Since when are we discussing the complexity of an MMOs social aspects? We're discussing female gamers, not all the other stuff.

Oh yeah, I've read The Prince. It has a very "Shutup, and killstuff. Blow shit up, and take no bullshit." point of view.

Great to see girl gamers standing up for themselves.....

I get really sick of seeing a player that identifies themselves as a girl (real or not) that immediately gets a group of hormonealy challenged followers trying to get her (him) to send pics or flash boobies.

I played as a girl one time just to see what it was like.... had a rotten time..

After that I started selling a series of girl gamer shirts....

Heya Kaiana, first, welcome to the mmorpg.com forums, always nice to see more estrogen show up :).

I've been gaming for years now and playing mmo's for just about 5, I've met lots of great people in my time online, many have been girls, lots have been guys, it's never been so much a thing about gender with me but of the person, and I've had many amazing experiences and have made life long friends. Which in the end, I guess is what keeps me playing mmo's.

As for the testosterone and violence... meh ! I grew up with 4 brothers so it's certainly nothing I'm not used too but the best way I deal with it is knowing who I am and being proud of that.

I'm proud of being a girl gamer, I like showing that we're not some weird genetic offshoot of the female species, like you I'm a fairly normal girl. I have a boyfriend, I have great friends, a wonderful family, I go to school, I work and I obsess over all the same crazy stuff every other female does. It just so happens that I love gaming and it's appart of me, it makes up who I am as a person in the world.

One of the things I did do to help "deal" with the whole "playing in a guys world" thing was immerse myself in the sceen as best I could. I joined two local lan groups, one being all female and the other mix, I stopped being afraid of being a girl online, it's who I am, why the hell should I not show it. I joined and participated in female gaming sites and tried to attend events, basically anything I could do to get into it.

In the end, I'm not some wacky ideological power feminist though, I know I'm not going to change the minds of many male gamers that seem to have a hard time accepting female gamers (and I've met many) or other females for that matter, who just don't get it. And that's ok, because I don't play games for anyone other then me and my friends and if by chance along the way I can get more girls into gaming, all the much better.

I was in a BF1942 DC(mod) clan for quite a few years and for awhile we had a 40-50 year old lady who had a Ph.D.(100% sure) in some area of science or such. Anyway, Mary was one hell of a soldier. A lot of us would use her in matches and general gameplay like infantry would use tanks in WWII: To hide behind for protection when advancing heh.(Not as in the human-shield sense btw)

I've also played with many people in WoW who were female characters and said they were females in RL. I would never assume they are ugly or disfigured, and I hardly ever doubted them. It wasn't like I planned to cyber or "date" any of them so I had no reason to be distrusting at all. Generally I find playing with female gamers refreshing. I find 13 yr old female gamers 3-4 times more mature than 20 year old male gamers.

I'm a male gamer, but I just can't see why girls should game too. I also can't see if people find out that a certain gamer is a girl, they claim that she's ugly, stupid or something else.

If i find out a gamer is a girl, i'd normal(not giving items for the: Ohh you big strong ele, can't you give this and that)

Teala, and girls like her, are my hero. I tried so hard to get into BF2 when it came out, I've always wanted to get really into a FPS and BF2 seemed like the perfect one at the time but in the end I just couldn't do it. Only so many times I can get shot and laugh it off image
