Forget fantasy for a moment and think reality too. I'm a big history buff, so I know a little about armor and fighting. Those that wore the heavy plate armor were actually poor fighters. They were actually the tanks of the middle-ages. Being such a high status target was their "taunt". No one ever used such armor or tactics except in full scale battles where they would wade into the opposing forces "taunting" the group to attack them (most of which fell to a hammer blow or pick to the head) while the archers fired from a distance to all the targets surrounding the tank.
In small battles of 10 or so people the lighter armored or no armored fighters were the best. High evasion and high damage. A heavily armored fighter in this situation would become a slow clumsy target, with hardly any of his attacks even hitting the enemy. So unlike games, people didn't run around jumping and swinging and turning cartwheels on the battlefield wearing full plate armor.

But it's still cool . I'd rather wear full shiny plate armor instead of a leather tunic if it meant I was a warrior. I guess thats just my personal opinion, but its how I am

And I think, correct me if I am wrong, that is exactly the thing HJ is going for -- the idea that you can armor up in that shiny plate OR that leather tunic OR whatever clothing (armor) you feel best identifies your character.
And perhaps even have multiple sets of armor/clothing to suit your mood.

That is exactly what they are going for! For you to be able to play how you want your character to look.
As for me, I think of it like this: A person wearing for armor could be the worst fighter in the world and get slaughtered by millions of arrows. Yet a person in a cloth tunic who has trained for a while could dodge the arrows because the have practiced. Or even better: two fighters go into an arena, one wearing total armor thinking it will protect him even though he hasn't practiced or have any skill and the other one could wear just a leather vest with a sword and beat the guy in the armor.
It's not about the armor you have it's about the skill that you have to make you an effective hero.
