Originally posted by Shoal I did not like EVE either, and the one main reason I did not like it was the horrendously long Zone travel times. Yes, I said Zone travel times. The 'One Server' hype on this game is a total sham. The chat system is across all Servers, and there is only one Log-In Server Point. But the game is fully Zoned as much as EQ is. The fact that any player in the game can meet up in a Zone with any other player only means the it is possible for HUGE lag situations to develop, and they do. EVE is a great game for the folks that enjoy it. And, I wish them all the enjoyment in the world for them. Just was not the game for me.
It is still one server, that doesn't have to mean it's hosted on one machine, just that everyone lives in the same instance or 'shard' of the game. As for lag, EVE is generally one of the least laggy MMO's out there, and they are usually pretty quick to take steps to fix it if it becomes a problem. The real amazing thing about EVE's server is that everything points to one set of databases, most standard MMO's will have separate databases for each shard, or for each group of shards, with EVE it's one set of databases for the entire playerbase, by the second year it was running they surpassed the 2 billionth database entry, by now they are probably passed the 6 billion mark, that's a exponentially higher than most MMO's and many corporatons will ever get.
