Ctrl-Alt-Del's Tim Buckley has just got back from E3 and given his seal of disapproval to Vanguard. He thinks Conan is much more inventive and actually gives MMO players something new rather than an EQ rehash. (Just as I thought, I don't know why people are so all over Vanguard, it really doesn't sound special in the slightest)

"As I mentioned, there were some disappointments at E3. Vangaurd among them. The game in motion just looked... well, it looked exactly like Everquest 2. Which isn't necessarily a problem, because I liked EQ2, but... we already have an EQ2. I don't see us needing another. I guess it makes sense, given the developer, but I also find it ironic given the game's recent migration back to its roots at SOE. All in all, I was completely unimpressed by the game. It was offering me nothing I couldn't get elsewhere, while Age of Conan is trying a bunch of new things." - Tim Buckley

That seems like a really bizzare thing to criticize Vanguard for, AFAIK it's been billed as "EQ 2 done right" or "the game for people who like EQ pre-EVENT" ever since they started work on it.
EDIT: To clarify, I think it's strange to play Vanguard and then criticize it for being like EQ since everything I've seen about it said that's what you should expect.
I get the feeling that you need to play Vanguard for a few hours for it to make sense.
A Work in Progress.

I didnt need a computer critic to tell me Vanguard is an EQ2. You really dont need to wait for it to come out - you just need to use your brains and common sense. Go look at the Vanguard site and information on the game. As you can see, it has all of EQ's features, like a heavy unholy grind, restricted classes and a deep craft system. Plus now that Sigil is sleeping in bed with $OE just makes it even more obvious. No, you dont need to look at the game to tell its another EQ - you just need to look at the site.
Sincerely,

Some of us are looking forward to an EQ rehash. It seems that Everquest and it's style is now something that is looked down upon by many, but the new mmorpgs of today, with their easy access, quick to the action, and combat intensive gameplay aren't as atttractive to me as the slower paced, thinking-players, time-sink, and hardcore mmorpg like Everquest was and what Vanguard seems to be. Conan looks like it might be fun for a while, until I get sick of the combat. Combat is all I am hearing about, so let's hope theres more to it. I will surely be giving both Vanguard and Conan a try, and I will see which one I like best and play it, based solely on that, nothing else.
If I listened to what people said about mmorpgs, I would be led so far away from what I prefer that I would be so disgusted with mmorpgs by now. So take my advice and play what you like, even if it is being looked down upon by others in the community.
This is exactly why I react soo much to a game like Vanguard.
They know what I like, they know it VERY well. However, past what I like, they also strap a LOT of things I dislike. I dunno which part of: 'No raiding' they don't get. Vanguard, like EQ and EQ2 offer a LOT of what I like, which competitors more or less offer. However, it come in some unholy package deal with raiding...never again!
This is exactly why I will be playing CoV and not caring for Vanguard...unless they get into their thick skull the non-raiding servers aspect...however it seem they won't. Yet, they keep saying....'hey, play it a little'. My problem is not with the FIRST parts of Vanguard, it is with ending...and this is something a player will only see after he invest himself in the game a LOT. After playing the game a LOT, enjoying it a LOT, they put this HORRIBLE* thing in front of you and deny you of everything!
This explain a LOT of the hatred, the 'Never play a SoE game' and such attitudes.
Yet...unlike 1 year ago, now I smile...BROADLY! BioWare is coming in this field! And BioWare will be offering the good aspect, without the bad ending! I just have to wait a little longer for BioWare to hit the shelves...time to smile...BROADLY! Go BioWare go!
*I can't underline the effects of raiding enough on many peoples enjoying the gameplay that lead to max level. HORRIBLE is not even strong enough, this is an awful betrayal on the most basic sense, a complete denial and backstab on your trusting players. You have a gameplay (GROUPING) and you deny it own rewards and 'ending/never ending'...yes, it can be never ending...but it has to be group-wise, not IGE or Raiding or PvP-wise...
PS: To be honest, the Vanguard DEMO should focus on raiding, since it is the goal of the game...having a demo on grouping while it end in raiding is not honest nor representative of the goal of the game...Such a demo could be done with NPCs and guildchat and you have to follow the raid and accomplish your part or the raid wipe...but no...they put a demo on the lowbie progression to it, making a false advertising on purpose, leading peoples to believe this is the goal of the game while in fact, it is merely the first step which has nothing to do with the 'real-game'. 80% of the game is not representative if the ending is in the 20% that remains.

Well the guy from CTRL ALT DEL is showing his noobishness a bit because I would say, "what did you expect from Brad Mquaid" ?
I mean not only did the guy design and build EQ1 but he has said time and time again in esponse to questions about VSoH that he wants it to be like EQ1. So its no real surprise that it looks like EQ2 because lets face it EQ2 is just a graphically prettier version of EQ1 with most of the difficulty removed. BmQ said he wanted to go back to the EQ1 difficulty model with a modern looking MMO.
Id say from the descriptions Ive read so far Sigil are delivering exactly what they promised, as usual though people tend to look at things through glasses coloured by what they hoped for rather than what they know they should have expected.

There are similarities, sure. However it is going for the same "realistic" fantasy look. The world is not at all like EQII and that is what you should be looking at.
What do you expect at this point? I think we are at critical mass with all these fantasy games. Everything looks like something right about now.
A real sci-fi game someone? Anyone? (ground AND space)
Any kind of game besides fantasy anyone?
ya know..the first thing I thought when I saw the screenshots was "Damn EQ2 clone"
i stepped back. Listened to my own criticism, "do graphics make a game?" not really.
so the review gave contrast to EQ2 a bit further, past graphics. Ultimately, Im disappointed with it based soley on the feedback from E3.
I'm not considering it a clone. But what they are trying to achieve isnt too far past what we have with games like DAoC and EQ2.
To take it a step further, theyre not *gasp* implementing a viable PvP option in the game for anyone who likes PvP.
I cant call this a clone of any current MMO. There are a slew of things that are NOT implemented. Look down the promised racial choices and class choices and ask a beta tester whats available.
ask how much PvP has been tested or if they have seen any of the content tested in-game that was presented at e3
all i gotta say is ive beta tested a lot of MMO's and I know the majority of you who are reading this have.
when it gets to a certain phase.. its set for release and THAT...yes...that is what you are testing. you're not testing expansions.. you ARE testing what they want to relese.
done.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
The guy in that review says he doesn't like it because it's too much like EQ1 ? If he can't even take the time to read what the devs vision of the game is why would anyone care what he thinks about it ? ..." EQ1 done the right way" , how much more clear can they be that yes VG is going to be like EQ1 ?
The problem is Vanguard isn't bringing ANYTHING new to the table! (I've noticed that whenever BmcQ strays into "new" features of his MMO he won't talk about them, on the grounds they're so inventive other next-gen games might copy them, the fact is most of the next gen games have already said what they're doing that's new...BmcQ is probably waiting to pick the best and copy them himself)
I've read the FAQ and details on the website and other places and to me it sounds like a really really uninventive game. Everything has been done before! And not just that, but the designer has made a POINT of it being a LONG game, one that will take forever to do anything, which is the MAIN thing I don't like in MMOs (it's weird that he's actually trying to make that aspect a SELLING point). With everyone having increasingly shorter time to "waste" on games why would you want one that takes ages to accomplish anything?
Plus, I don't think Tim Buckley is talking about what it looked like graphics-wise (at least not entirely), I think he meant it "looked" the same as EQ2, as in you have exactly the same goals, movement, combat, skills, spells, races, classes, etc. Honestly, if I wanted EQ or EQ2 I'd be playing them, but I got bored of them QUICK and for all the reasons that BmcQ is listing as selling points in his new "state of the art" game...haha!
Anyway, I'll reserve my full judgement until release, or at least until beta test reports start coming from trusted members of the community. Suffice to say I'm looking forward to the differences Conan will bring rather than the "10 year old game 'done right'" that Vanguard claims to be.
With the MMORPG market in the state it is now most people don't want yet another EQ clone whether or nor it's "done the right way" or not.
We've had pretty much nothing but fantasy elf crap EQ clones for the past 7 years and it's done gone stale. The EQ style "get a sandwich" combat system has run it's course and needs to be retired and getting to level 10 is guaranteed to take more than a month is not a selling point anymore.
Also, playing EQ1 or Vanguard or any game like them doesn't make you "hardcore", it makes you the only people willing to tolerate antiquated gameplay.
Indeed.
Btw Stratics awarded VSoH Best of Show as well as runner up in the gfx dept.
As I have said in past post, Vanguard is not going to be the one mmo to rule them all as some people make it out to be. From my .....experience with the game I wont be buying when it goes on the selves.
The Brave Do Not Fear The Grave
Who is Ctrl-Alt-Del's Tim Buckley anyway?
Is he an important figure in the MMO community or something?
He went to E3 and saw the game...did you?
He went to E3 and saw the game...did you?
well..............who is he? Does he make MMO's or something? Is he a reviewer?
No, I didn't see it but I'm not the one giving my "seal of disapproval" Just asking who he is to the MMO community.
How many MMO's can you have custom housing? I know only a few
How many MMO's give you the difficulty of the first two MMORPS?
How many MMO's give you your custom ships?
How many MMO's give you ridable steeds that can fly and PLAYERS can control?
Vanguard looks like a star in my eyes. A new light shining in on the MMO drought. I cannot wait for Vanguard to release and let me just say this. Many people look down on Vanguard right now, but I guarantee you that will change when all the reviews come out for the game.
