I don't have a degree. Just 10 years in the IT industry, 2 decades of gaming experience, and a healthy interest in various topics ranging from history to philosophy.
If that disqualifies me from talking about things here... well, hell, what does it matter anyway? Some college graduates around here are as inarticulate as any high school kid.

Me personally, I originally rated WoW near a perfect ten and had to go back in and revise my rating upon maxing out a couple of characters. The game is an absolute blast until level sixty, when it becomes raid after raid after raid after raid. There aren't any viable non-raiding options and every content patch adds another raid. I don't care about "epic" drops.... I just want something fun to do. I went so far as to start an officially non-raiding guild..... and people quit when they hit sixty like clockwork. Like a lot of the original beta testers, I believed Blizzard when they said WoW's endgame would be PvP driven. To give them credit, I think they believed it when they said it. But this is enough of a disapointment that it diminished my opinion of the rest of the game. Character development can be heaps of fun, but when you know there's no point to it, it takes some of the wind out of your sails.
its the most popular game, people are jealous, give it low ratings and voilá, the result is here.
Imo, WoW could use some fixing here and there. the pvp system could be improved, and some more endgame content would be nice. its not perfect. no mmo is. however compared to todays other MMO´s, I DO think its currently the best mmo out there. If you ask a hater here what other game we should play, they will either respond with a boring game like EVE, or they won't respond at all.
Its easy to see,Wow is a fast fix thats easy to smash till ubber bordom.where other games are more indepth.
Guildwars has over 300skills for each character combo, you can only use 8 at a time, anyone with half a brain can tell the pvp in guildwars is more indepth.that alone is what makes players stay and rate it higher.
Eve has "fear" real "risk" of losing it all,"freedom" to rise and make impacks in the game,.In depth pvp.
I really cant say much for wow, other then its just a fast 1 to 3 month crack fix that gets to old to fast,.theres just no freedom,.your traped in this looping repeating bad dream till you wake up and stop playing.
I dont play any of them games anymore,. GW is free so sometimes I jump in to pvp.

Thats a fair point, I don't like wow and don't consider recommending it but there are many who enjoy it. However I think the reasons for me is firstly that its not a common request I think this is because people asking for a MMORPG would normally have played WOW and if not still playing for it probably looking for something different(I don't find many request that specify wow like game) secondly recommending wow due to its popularity often doesn't seem pratical because most know of it already, thirdly I prefer EQII than wow as far as that type of game goes even though I don't really think of recommending it either and thats because "I'm being a little harsh on WOW and EQII" I'll admit it. I honestly didn't realize that they hadn't even occured to me when recommending games until you pointed that out but although I'd prefer other type of games to be supported and funded like wow I don't think I'm jeolous but just reflecting my personal bias(although I try to approach the request without bias I haven't been in regards to the large games) which again I didn't realize I'd been doing until you mentioned it.
WoW is overated IMO, it is an overgrown EQ tutorial, it is better than EQ, yet it is merely a tutorial, you go accross it in no time. If you like EQ, than WoW is better on all topics (almost) except for game lenght & diversity. WoW has the same critical flaws EQ has and Blizzard is slowly but certainly been treated like SoE, as more peoples get to experience the game for a long time.
In 3 years there will be more 'Blizzard suck threads' then you can imagine, because raiding - in the current forms - doesn't create happy customers, it harvest hatred and unhappiness.
CoV/CoH should be the #1 game as far as rating goes, but peoples dislike super heroes style games. Any non-medieval-fantasy game should be applied a compensator bonus if you really want to compare the game, except EvE off course, because EvE fanbois loooove this site, they are welcome and all, but EvE got a much higher ranking than it seriously deserve!
BioWare is going to change our lives...in 3 or 4 years most likely, still that is the best news I ever got in a loooong time. Even if they make World of Magic the Gathering, I would support them...but I honestly hope that it will be something like: Baldur's Gate 3, Bhaal Resurgence...or something among these lines! BioWare is a serious gaming company:
- They understand what the player wants, which is SOLO/GROUPING dual ending content. Raiding, Tradeskills, PvP, I would be surprised if any is included in their title and I am confident it would not be at the expense of solo/grouping.
- They can respect their own rules, Game Balancing done by BioWare won't screw someone who play the game for a long time by making him lame as in a game run by Cryptic or Blizzard. (like the D&D stuff is liked because of the stability of the rules, someone knows how they work, even if every player can 'improve' the D&D design, everyone understand what they are and what to expect) Most of the game balancing would be done prior release and after release, I am pretty sure there will be very little, if any, nerf at all. BioWare was always honest to live by their rules, to respect them, up to the end. (nothing prevent full rebalancing on new server, a new server can have any rule change you want)
- FUN, it might be hard, long, borderline tedius, but it is always FUN.

I have said it, having no raid at all would be better. A YOU WIN card would be better than this raiding bitter taste, as you didn't finish, you didn't really succeed with your character, because what remain to be done is something you dislike and have nothing to do with the gameplay that brought you there. Basically you play a fun game for 60 levels and are denied your legitimate ending. Solo/Grouping end-game would be ideal, a WIN card would be okay, but a raiding trash enforcement? Blizzard is deserving a SoE treatment and they order one massive such treatment!
Raiding, done properly, would not start AFTER you max level and it would not give the best grouping/soloing tools. Raiding, as done now, will lead to hatred and unhappiness only. As the peoples who enjoy it are peoples who enjoy abusing unfair edges over honest players.

This is exactly why people don't like WOW: not simply because of the let-down about the end-game, but the feeling we were lied to that there would be certain viable options there that weren't.
For me, it was a combination of things that let me to cancel. I tell folks all the time that for a fun few months, WOW is your game, and then not feel bad if you want to quit because all that's left is raiding.
WOW's like a cheap hooker: it's good for a momentary pleasure, but you got to know when to hit it, and quit it.

Thats fairly common amogst all MMORPG games though, even at most of there own forums, it may have started with a few mistakes but the resentment spread pretty quickly. I hated SOE because of stories I heard but I believe those stories still.(heard them while playing EQII aswell about poor customer service, never really experienced it though) Games like Mourning don't help and I've heard those stories aswell. But I've overreacted on occassions were I've assumed developers/companies to be lying and on those occasion theyr most probably weren't lying but direct communication from a developer to a player helps alot! (it stops or at least moderates the speculation)
EDIT: *shrug* Also chuck marketing hype in the mix and people understanding that its often misleading but I think its true that these are all valid reasons adding to what is fairly common.
people are jealous. people are trashing it because it's popular and that's the cool thing to do.
i guess some *people* have just defined how things work in their junior high school classes or maybe their high school classes and they assume that's how works the rest of the world.
character customization - unable to choose where you put points into dexterity, strength etc. you get the same points in the same spots as everyone else of your class. lvl 60 - if you've "learned to raid"; then you have the exact same talent spec as everyone else your class. if you're raiding, then you have the exact same armor/weapons as everyone else your class. post lvl 60, can you even notice the hair color/style you chose at character creation? i mean, why do they even bother putting in the couple of little things you can change, when you never see them and everyone looks alike if they're your class/race. if they're just your class, then you look like taller/shorter versions of each other. character customization is appalling, no variety, no choices.
please refute this statement so that i see i'm just jealous.
pvp - you have to grind pvp instances many times over in order to get faction points to get items. (again with the getting of the items). pvp rank is given to those who have spent the most time in BGs - or have spent the most time scouting bgs and only staying in ones they could win quickly.
game was hyped as being very casual player friendly and where everyone (hard core and casual players) can get the same equipment, essentially. furthermore, the hardcore players would get their bonus prizes from being the ones to pvp the most/best (since it is called WARcraft). jeff *all i've every done is raid in eq and i have no creativity on my own* kaplan, pretty much screwed that pooch. nothing but raids. nothing but stolen ideas (alterac valley is nothing more/less than defense of the ancients).
there's no penalty for death. if you say "you lose precious time running back to your body" or "eventually i have to repair my equipment"; then you've just shown your noobness and how you really don't understand. you can't be looted, you can't lose any item you have - ever. this non-death penalty encourages moronic suicidal playing. since there is NO penalty, these *people* will never learn to play better.
please show me how i'm wrong here and this is just me trying to fit in with the cool kids bashing the popular game whilst wearing goth clothes and staying out of the sun so i'm super pasty white. all you get from people supporting this *game* is that it's real popular and it's a great seller and that's why it's so good AND that's why so many people hate it.
for the little kid that can only cuss to make his points.
pvp lock
three instant casts, three fears, immolate and shadowburn, soul link (automatically on, don't have to click anything), felhunter (with everything auto on, again nothing to do but put it on aggressive or point it to a target).
fear enemies (in this order) lock, priest, mage, other. spam instant casts. aoe fear if you get bumrushed. throw in immolate and/or shadowburn as needed.
no brainer to play a lock and lock (specc'd for soul link, instant cast corruption and the rest in destruction) is easily one of the more powerful (if not most powerful) toons in pvp.

that's a loaded statement. as you've pointed out many times before, no one can tell you what game you should play, it's a matter of your choice and opinion.
isn't that the definition of hypocrite? maybe you should choose whether you want someone to actually give you the better game(s) name(s) or you want to slam them FOR giving you those names (which you've done in the recent past).
better games out right now than wow? based upon what? graphics? gameplay? fun things to do for months to come? character customization?
graphics. COx, ryzom, eve, a couple of others have pretty great graphics.
gameplay? fun things to do for months to come? uo, horizons, daoc, ao, shadowbane, ryzom, eve, or pretty much any game that doesn't just dump all the gameplay into hundreds of hours of raiding.
character customization? um, all the games i've already mentioned beat wow in character customization. this is not an opinion, this is a fact. name one other game (just use the ones i've mentioned to make it easy on yourselves) that does not let you assign points into stats (strength, dexterity, etc) BUT gives you those stats so it looks like you have some sort of rp-toon? name another game with that lack PLUS everyone is vying to get the same exact gear and everyone looks alike with maybe just one or two minor items different -- where every choice you COULD make (talents) has already been chosen for you because there's only one build you can take into the raids...
challenges? well, i've defined challenges in different games a few times, idiots mucked that up. some idiots have taken one or two statements out of the definition of challenging things in other games and just mis-represented everything i said because.... oh yeah, because they DON'T play wow and they're NOT a fanboi lemming. fact - wow is dummied down and simple. fact - if you disagree with that you've either never played an mmo other than wow, or you're in denial.
fanatical cult following of people (who whether they play the game or not) that defends the game like it was their god? well, that covers wow for certain.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Right now i am currently playing wow very casualy. It takes me a very long time to do anything. There are things i love, from the first aid to herbalism to changing up skills to being albe to train in different things.
I haven't reached end game nor plan to but enjoy very much exploring the world as much as I want to.
As far as playing in the mean time till something else comes along that is fine too. But frankly there is nothing out there in the near future that interests me. So as a casual player that is not in a hurry, i enjoy logging in day or night in any area of the game any level finding groups asap if i want or just camp a spawn to my hearts content.
It may be a long while before i ever feel the same way about a game as I did swg and or daoc but that is ok to in the mean time i found something to do that is fun to me.
Of course the problem comes in after being in a polished game with not so many glaring bugs it will be hard to deal with other up and coming mmorpgs that will be released as sloppy as some of the recent trys. I found i just do not have the stamina or will power to deal with sloppiness at this point . That is ok too.

If you absolutely wants us to advertise our employers, I could tell you to go visit sarbakan.com, to encourage some of our clients like Nick.com, Warner or Disney...but...I am no PR, I leave that to the PR, I am an animal who do game designs, nothing more, I am not well versed in talking in public, I basically say what I want to say, the PR folks go over the doc changing everything, I veto some sentences and that is it! ...and as a player, as a gamer, I prefer MMOs, this is all! When I come home...I dream about what BioWare will release!

WoW was a game billed as revolutionary, the only thing that ended up being revolutionary is the amount of boxes it was able to push via name recognition and marketing. It was supposed to feature dynamic world PvP , not retarded BGs where people needed to log 8+ hours a day for 4 months to make the HWL climb. I mean hell they were able to climb higher in the rankings by just /afking in the BGs instead of fighting for a long time. The PvP is strictly gear-based, not skill-based. Yes, that is some ground breaking PvP.
The PvE is beyond bland. EQ end-game PvE was much more challenging.
WoW is a cookie-cutter game that literally requires no skill or competency. It is not a set-up conducive for long-term retention. If it had anything that was interesting enough to keep people's attention long-term you would not see the mass exodus of people to sites like these demeaning the game.
If you played something that was o.k. for a while, quickly lost its luster and couldn't keep your sub would you goto a website and say: "Yes, go play this game, it's tolerable for awhile..."? That's basically the best review of this game I could give. People have the right to vent their displeasure with a game that ultimately didn't live up to the hype.

Agreed, the PvP purpose could have been improved considerably, and was a letdown of the game. I'm not so critical of BGs though they were fun but the game should have been more world pvp focused.
The PvE is beyond bland. EQ end-game PvE was much more challenging.
Agreed, typically instances were very static.

Competancy is tested for sure with raids and grouping, of course you will get people that can't do both. But it does test that. Skill I agree, I had a post about 'skill-based' mechanics which they actually had in warcraft 3 but for some reason didn't want to use in WoW.

Good point though I do think WoW is ok at least for a short while or especially if you are new to the mmo genre.

(again with the getting of the items). pvp rank is given to those who have spent the most time in BGs - or have spent the most time scouting bgs and only staying in ones they could win quickly.
game was hyped as being very casual player friendly and where everyone (hard core and casual players) can get the same equipment, essentially. furthermore, the hardcore players would get their bonus prizes from being the ones to pvp the most/best (since it is called WARcraft). jeff *all i've every done is raid in eq and i have no creativity on my own* kaplan, pretty much screwed that pooch. nothing but raids. nothing but stolen ideas (alterac valley is nothing more/less than defense of the ancients).
there's no penalty for death. if you say "you lose precious time running back to your body" or "eventually i have to repair my equipment"; then you've just shown your noobness and how you really don't understand. you can't be looted, you can't lose any item you have - ever. this non-death penalty encourages moronic suicidal playing. since there is NO penalty, these *people* will never learn to play better.
please show me how i'm wrong here and this is just me trying to fit in with the cool kids bashing the popular game whilst wearing goth clothes and staying out of the sun so i'm super pasty white. all you get from people supporting this *game* is that it's real popular and it's a great seller and that's why it's so good AND that's why so many people hate it.
for the little kid that can only cuss to make his points.
pvp lock
three instant casts, three fears, immolate and shadowburn, soul link (automatically on, don't have to click anything), felhunter (with everything auto on, again nothing to do but put it on aggressive or point it to a target).
fear enemies (in this order) lock, priest, mage, other. spam instant casts. aoe fear if you get bumrushed. throw in immolate and/or shadowburn as needed.
no brainer to play a lock and lock (specc'd for soul link, instant cast corruption and the rest in destruction) is easily one of the more powerful (if not most powerful) toons in pvp.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I don't even get how you can be jealous of a game....it's a frigen game!
I don't even get how you can be jealous of a game....it's a frigen game!
But look at the forums and the bickering and the people advertising there game of choice like they were getting payed to advertise for it
EDIT Glad you understand enough for me to get a conversation about it though, just making space for a conversation
isn't that the definition of hypocrite? maybe you should choose whether you want someone to actually give you the better game(s) name(s) or you want to slam them FOR giving you those names (which you've done in the recent past).
better games out right now than wow? based upon what? graphics? gameplay? fun things to do for months to come? character customization?

That is ok too.
fanatical cult following of people (who whether they play the game or not) that defends the game like it was their god? well, that covers wow for certain.
Just wanted to seperate those two things you said.
But getting a FUN game, that make you happy and entertain you a LOT is better than a salary!
CoV/CoH are the less bad MMOs choice ATM, BioWare is going to rake our world!
When I come home...I dream about what BioWare will release!

double post. my bizzle
People have the right to vent their displeasure with a game that ultimately didn't live up to the hype.

lol
wouldn't know about that company or those games though, haven't played them as i'm not interested in the hero theme personally but not the grind thing either
but
lol
Agreed, the PvP purpose could have been improved considerably, and was a letdown of the game. I'm not so critical of BGs though they were fun but the game should have been more world pvp focused.
Agreed, typically instances were very static. Competancy is tested for sure with raids and grouping, of course you will get people that can't do both. But it does test that. Skill I agree, I had a post about 'skill-based' mechanics which they actually had in warcraft 3 but for some reason didn't want to use in WoW.Good point though I do think WoW is ok at least for a short while or especially if you are new to the mmo genre.
