Can a mod place this thread in the off-topic already please? It's been on the front page for 2 days now, why the OP brought it over from off-topic in the first place makes no sense.  No offense this just isn't a general discussion thread, certainly not at the point to which it has been driven off the original post, thanks.

Character customization for homosexuality? It's there barely any character customization in any game? There should be gayer or hetrosexual looking stuff in almost all of them that has alt clothing and stuff. This is nothing realy to debate opun. (in my eyes, unless I'm missing somthing).

Do you want to support stereotyping of indivduals by over playing characteristics many consider to be "gay"? Or are they just going to be well dressed and always matching (then, is he gay, or metro???)

How a player plays his/her toon is their own buisness, and if you want to play homosexual then do it however you want or see fit. I just don't see how you could customize a character to be homosexual without causes a stir with a lot of people. Homophobes for it being there, and some homosexuals for you stereotyping them.

The only way I can see to do this, without stereo typing, is to make all options in a game that are male or female (Ie in SWG a male couldn't put on a dress) unisex. Meaning if one toon wants to marry another toon, who cares what sex they are. A homosexuals money is as good as a hetrosexual persons. so why shouldn't they have the option to play the game they want? If you don't like how someone else is playing the game, put them on ignore...problem solved.

I don't know, I guess you could include a sexuality slider in character creation and have it appear in a /who or something...

But this all seems like it's solving a problem that doesn't exist. I RP gay characters online and I do fine with the character creation tools provided me by my games. In fact I suspect I may be the only gay Froglok in existence. ;)

im not gay but i would assume that they don't want to be treated any different than anyone else.  Equal rights, not different ones.  I think many people would get offended if there was a gay button of sorts, gay and straight.

Weren't there Greek warriors who were gay?  The spartans I think.  And from what I remember in school they kicked ass.  So I would roleplay one of them.

Homosexualty was part of acient Greek culture. Do you really think they could build one of the bravest armies if they were all gay? It takes generations for that :)

And belive me... Making a game "gay friendly" is the last thing on Devs mind. It's just stupid. It's retarded. Any gay person that would say that he/she demands a "gay friendly" game shoud be shot or what ever becouse that is byoned retarded. That's like biggest sexisem ever.

I doubt gays need a "gay games" to feel gay or to express there gaynes.

This must be the most stupid topic I ever seen.

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

If i recall, they were'nt homosexuals.  The Ancient Greeks that the male body was beutiful, which explains all the naked statues.  I can't remember if the spartans were gay or not, but since it was such a strict militaristic society that killed children for birth defects, or for just not looking healthy, i don't think they would have taken kindly to any difference.

Actually, the Spartans were fairly gay. The Thebans were even gayer. It was commonly believed at the time that men would fight harder and their morale would be higher if they fought side by side with their lovers, so whole units were composed of homosexual couples. For an example you might be more familiar with, many scholars agree that in Homer's epic, the Iliad, Achilles and Patrocles were gay together.

Anyway, this has no bearing on gay in MMOs, where honestly it has no more place than straight in MMOs. You have guys and girls, not sexualities.

i dont want that possiblility because young kids would be determined to become gay and they would think its alright. shure im pro-homo and im not gay but in games it shouldnt be allowed in real life its diffrent because there are diffrent age groups and yes there are in games but what im saying is younger kids play games more then go out and look for gay people well you get what i mean

One day when playing Star Wars Galaxies I filled out my bio.  As a lark I made my character gay.  Now, my bio not only was about a homosexual but was actually pretty funny.  I got some great comments about it.  A lot of people said it was nice to see something a little different.  There was the odd goof that freaked out because my character was gay.  All they did was show me how pathetic they were.  By and large it was pretty funny.

Of course its hard to feel threatened when you read about a Mon Calmari joining the Rebellion for being caught having gay sex with a Wookie by the Empire.

You see, I have a problem.  Although I'm a straight guy in RL, I often play females toons in my mmorpgs.  The reason for this is that I'd rather look at a chick's bum for hours at a time than some muscle bound guy.

This makes me feel a little strange however, and other players often treat me as a woman, and I feel bad not reciprocating.   I often have to tell them I'm not a fem in RL, which seems to make people 'uncomfortable'.

Now, if there's a homo button that I can select during character creation, I can click it and problem solved!!! I'll be  a RL guy who plays a toon who likes chicks, all the while watching my babe toon.  In other words, I'm a lesbian, trapped in a mans body.

And this is meant to stop men chatting you up, or drive them into a boner frenzy?

Then there are a lot of very weird schools out there.  Because that's the truth.

The men back then only had sex with women to procreate.  Most of them would marry and then leave their wives at home to go back to their male lovers.  And the leaders liked it because it maintained cohesiveness of the troops.

There's tons of literature written about it if you don't want to believe what people on a forum tell you.  Go look it up.

I Rp'ed  a mentalist in DAoC who was definitely light in his loafers but not openly gay. Just real real wimpy and effeminate. Also had his cousin who was a champ on the same server and in the same guild and I rp'ed him as a drunken he man womanizer. Imagine Tony Curtis opposite Walter Mathaue in the odd couple. I kept my guild in stitches when I two boxed and had them arguing back and forth.  In real life I am neither gay nor a drunken womanizer. They call them MMORPG's for a reason.

    I miss DAoC

I studied Classics for 7 years, and Ancient History for 2, it's just your school that is weird.

you have studied the Classics for 7 years, and you have never come upon examples of Greek men having sex with each other?  Do you go to Oral Roberts University?
  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

Not to the exaggerated extent described above no.

All of the love poetry I studied  is about women. Even the one about Lesbos was dissappointingly straight. I read nothing of Spartans being gay at all. I was taught that Achilles was trying to get back to his wife, and resist the charms of assorted sexy witches and mermaids. Nothing about any boy on boy action at all.

I'm aware that in the Victorian times the fall of Rome was blamed on it's decadence and man on man loving was a great bugbear of the time. And in the porno film Caligula, he shags a centurion for 20 seconds and then about 30 women for the next 2 hours.

I recently read Brad Pitt plays a gay bloke in the movie Troy. That is the only time other than this thread that I have read about gay ancient greeks.

Sorry I have no idea what Oral Roberts University is. Sounds like yours was in Soho.

    Aye.

I studied history a bit as well, and while there are cited examples of homosexuality in the past, it certainly wasn't prevalent in society. At least not the European society. I don't believe that people considered loving men 'gay' back in those days, because it wasn't about a sexual preference. It was mostly about adoring the male's physique, his natural accomplishments, his skill in battl, and his merit. Rarely did we study cases where men had male lovers, solely because they wanted to do it with each other. It was usually more of a side dish with the main meal, if that makes sense.

However, in Asian culture, it was very frequent for men to have male lovers.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

In EVE atleast you don't need some tag above your head that states your sexual orientation, if you want to play a gay character it's up to you I suppose. Also I don't think anyone is offended by them, though some do ridicule them. However their alliance is a bit to powerful to ridicule to their face, since they might war declare you then proceed to pod your miserable hide into oblivion.
Player x "Man I really hate these fags!"
    Elton John "Say what noob?"
Player x "Erm, I meant I hate this lag. Nice Battleship BTW"

That's actually a lampoon.  They are making fun of gay people, not RPing as gay people really.  It's more like a parody of gay people.

More representative in EVE is the Glamour Bunnies [GLB], who really do RP as lipstick lesbian types.

As for the main topic, I don't see an issue with RPing as gay or lesbian, in fact I have known quite a number who do so.  But having a specific identifier in character creation seems a bit much, to be honest.

Is there not allready this option?

You can act however gay you want, or what are you asking for?

A paladin in a pink tutu would only reinforce the gay stereotype and may deter from whatever feeling the game is trying to project me thinks.

Unless "bitchslapping", "finger waving" and "hair pulling" is a base skill allready, in wich case I would imagine a raid tank stopping to paint his finger nails wouldnt even raise an eye brow.
