I think both countries should just send their best gamers and have them duke it out over Halo or something.

I doubt either North Korea or Iran would use nukes preemptively against the United States. We've got enough nuclear firepower to turn both those countries into radioactive parking lots. The main danger is some terrorist nutjob(s) getting their hands on a nuke.

But its ok if a insane dictator who has been starving his own people to have Nuclear weapons.

Incase you hadnt heard the U.S. is not the only nation to be concerned over this.

Are you freaking crazy? Dude, they're Korean! That's such an unfair advantage! They'd whoop us silly at video games :P Oh, okay, maybe that's a S. Korea thing more so, but they could  steal S. Korea's best gamer to fight us.

One the other hand it would be a cool PPV match to watch. I for one have been lobbying for years that all wars ought to be fought by the most attractive woman from each country in the dispute fighting in jell-o. The only real flaw in my logic is some country's "most attractive woman" would still be pretty damned scary ;)

Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

You know, I agree with you really. Despite even my bravado when people spout off crap about the U.S. the whole thing WOULD be stupid. The only thing I want to correct you on is what I highlighted. N. Korea did not say they would launch a nuclear strike if we launched one at them first, they said they would launch an "annihilating nuclear strike against ANY pre-emptive strike". This could mean something as small as sending a few planes over their airspace, something they have been screaming about for years whether or not it's actually happening.

In short the threat is "Even so much as knock on our door too loud and we're going to nuke away." That's just...daft.

Yea I got that part wrong.  But I seriously doubt that NK would lauch nukes at us if we felw into their air space.  But then again you never know.  Also you gotta factor in that China would back NK in a heartbeat.  But as I said before everyone loses in a nuke war.

We should get some dog poop and put it in a bag, then we could go knock on their door and light it on fire and RUN!  Hahahaha.  Then blame it on Mexico or somthing.  Or we could do a basic egging.  We could blame that one on Italy, who needs them anyways?

Sounds like the rhetoric most nations would use if another country attacked them. Attack us and we'll attack you, pretty mucha sound diplomatic principle since the dawn of history.

If North Korea made a move on South Korea does anybody think the west would get involved militarily?

I am sure there would be condemnation from the UN, but would we take on a nuclear power?

Of course we would!  We would have to, no matter what.  We would have to pull our troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, Europe, and of course we already have troops in South Korea.  But we would do that in a second and send them all to the DMZ.  And because we already have troops there on the front lines we would have to move, because any attack by NK would take some American lives.  Also SK is a very strategic spot for the U.S.  I mean its our gateway to China basically.  We would move in with out a doubt.  And IMO it would be WW3.  But then again I really dont think that NK is going to attack SK.  I always compare Castro assasinatiny Kennedy to NK attacking SK.  After Kennedy got shot they had an interview with Castro and basically asked him if he had Kennedy killed.  And he flat out told them no, and went on to say that that would of been one of the stupidest things he could of done because it would of given America a perfect reason to invade Cuba.  Not to compare NK with Cuba.  But I dont think NK is really that stupid to open up the can of worms we like to call America.  Not that we are all powerful, but it would be one of the stupidest things they could do.  I mean they are just getting the nukes up, they dont want to give us another reason to start a war with them.  See the nukes are no so much a weapon as they are a leverage tool, and they dont want to lose that tool quite yet.  I believe that once they get a little more powerful they will use this tool inconjuction with China and maybe some other smaller nations to become the main "superpower"s.  Kind of how we think we are with England right now.  But see the future does not seem to include America IMO.  It looks like the alliance that I mentioned above and the European Union.  I believe the future will not be nation agaisnt nation, but more of alliance against alliance.  I just do not see America standing up to any major alliance.  You also have the middle east, if they could get their act together.  I believe that America will soon lose a lot of power very fast.  Just somthing we will have to deal with and adapt with or the American way of life will fail.  Good thing I'll be out of the country by then .  Really none of this post is based of facts more of my opinion and interpirtation of what I know and have seen.  Although the Castro stuff is true and some other things.

You'r stunning intellect shows through here. You'd like to see America "get Now let's just rule out the U.S. reactings with nuclear capabilities. I think at that point we'd just give Japan and S. Korea a nod and let them at it. Both countries are none too fond of N. Korea and both are quite capable of devouring them militaristically in a short time.

North Korea has more soldiers in it's army than the combined armed forces of the U.S.

South Korea wants peace and unification with the North, not war. The Japanese are pacifists and constitutionally barred from invading anywhere.

    .

    .

A few notes on other posts. The U.S. is the worlds No.2 military power. Russia outguns the U.S on nukes  3:2.

Shooting down enemy missiles is currently a fantasy. Anti missile systems were first used in conflict in 1982 and last used in 2003. So far the best results they have achieved in combat is to shoot down a friendly plane.

The U.N. is not a political body. It has no powers, it cannot "do" anything. it is a diplomatic institution at which nations from all over the world can discuss what they would like to do and make treaties amongst each other.

They would be fools not to. American troops have been staging invasion exercises on the Korea Border for 50 years. The Americans have consistently refused to sign non aggression treaties. Bush and Americans accross the board condemn North Korea openly as an enemy.

A deterant unused is not a deterrant.

North Korean's are not morons, they can only reasonably assume from this behaviour that America wants aggression. It is essential for the freedom of the people of North Korea that they develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting mainland U.S.A. The burden of developing this kind of a weapon system in a country so small has economically crippled it for many years. Despite sharing a border with China and Russia and being a natural buffer zone between those three great powers, neither China nor Russia has been willing to provide North Korea with nuclear assistence as that would also change the balance of power on their own borders.

While the handful of nuclear weapons North Korea might possess isn't enough to reduce America to ash, a single one could destroy New York. How badly does America want to invade or destroy North Korea? Not that badly is my guess. The price has become too high. (The new Korean missile does not have the potential range to hit New York currently, only Alaska). Further to this an ICBM opens up a new level of combat, it can kill your leaders.

With the ability of North Korea to nuke America, the balance of power is changed. North Korea can now invade South Korea with conventional forces should it so wish. America's nuclear Ace has been matched. The balance of power in that region altered.

Unlike in the invasion of Iraq, where our leaders can order peoples deaths from the safety of their armchairs, in an ICBM engagement, Washington is a prime target. They and their families can be killed too. Once Korea (north and south) as a country gains the level of independence from outside interferenece (be it Japanese, Russian or American), that only ICBM's can currently deliver, it will be intresting to see how the social situation develops.

Koreas independence is a problem for America. (And by knock on, her investors). Korea is the edge of the American empire. If Korea gains independance? What about Taiwan? and then Japan and so on. America's pacific trade is a about half of it's business. This is a very real threat to the American standard of life.

It's freedom from the U.S. they seek not the freedom of the American way or death.

The reason they are starving is because they want that freedom very badly.

The reason they are starving is because they are living under a Tyranny, one controlled by a madman who makes sure he and his cronies live in comfort and doesn't give a rat's ass about his people.

If they shifted income and effort from weapons production to agricultural development and improving their infrastructure, they would have nothing to fear and not need to be arming themselves.  hell the UN, US and the rest of the world would be giving them all kinds of handouts if they did this.
