The US supplies a lot of expensive Plane and missle system technology to allies for mainly defensive purposes.
Most of the "problem" conflicts of the world in Africa, South America, the Middle East, involve mostly small arms. The rifle of choice is the AK, produced by Russia.
In 2003. US weapons supplied 18 of the 25 armed conflicts. There is more than the AK you know

Actaully I'm not sure. You have forced me to read up and learn more.
The problem is getting reliable figures. I'm not sure Russian arms sales details are released to the press. I did enjoy that film Lord Of War. (All his gear was Russian). Maybe I will have a look at Janes website they usually have a good idea of what is going where.
The U.S. buys bullets and rocket engines off of Russia. The best selling tank is Russian. The best selling rifle is Russian. They have the worlds largest Navy and Airforces which tend to imply knock on sales.

but, how many did the Russians, 25/25 is my guess.
There is more than the AK, but you can bet one side or the other is using it, often both.
The AK is everywhere. That is for sure. But I don't know if it should be counted as official sales. I figures I have found previously in this thread are "official" numbers. Or as official as it can get. So according to these "official" numbers the US is the biggest, in terms of money atleast. But that could ofcourse mean that the US sells one F16 to Pakistan and Russia sells thousands of Ak47 to Africa for the same price. I would also think that alot of Russian weapon sales goes through bribes and stolen goods.
But wether it's Russia or the US doesn't really matter. Both are in the UN security council, along with all the other biggest arms dealers. No wonder the UN is solving all conflicts, when the security council is making enormous amounts on keeping them running.
Whose office is official anyway? The danger of these kind of statistics is that they are all very political. Like we often do the person compiling them is often compiling them to score a political point.
P.S. the Russians also sell a lot Mig 29's, artillery, munitions, satelittes, ships, submarines, aircraft carriers, guided missiles, anti tank systems, transport planes, armoured cars, spare parts, uniforms, boots, helicopters silkworms, SAM's rocket powered torpedoes and god knows what else. The Ak rifles is just the tip of the iceberg.
Pakistan has also bought Mig 29's, not just F 16.
All weapon sales go through bribes, and embargo breakers would obviously all be stolen goods.

Yes, they are very political. So I'm not saying I'm 100% sure that USA is the biggest arms dealer. But that both Russia and USA are under the top 5, that is for sure.
The USA also sells planes, artillery, munitions, satelites, missiles, anti tank systems and so on. I don't think any of these 2 sells less than the other.
What I meant with bribes/stolen goods, was that the US probably has more control over what they sell, to whom they sell. While in Russia it's all abit more, what should I say, "private".
I understand baff's comments, there is a lot of resentment in the UK about IRA sympathy in the US.
They blew up kids and innocents. When we hear someone from the US say it isn't terrorism, they were freedom fighters, it makes our f*cking blood boil, it is a very touchy subject for a lot of people.
That is why people said things like "9/11 serves the f*ckers right, perhaps now they understand what terrorism is about", it is not some noble freedom fighting cause, it is taking innocent people and turning their world to hell.
To be honest that was my "knee jerk" reaction when I saw those towers going down, which is odd because I am something of a fan of the US, hehe, I think the world could do a lot worse than the US for a superpower.
This is not how I feel 99% of the time though, I hate all terrorism and sympathise with the victims. I know not all people in the US think the IRA are cool, but I am just saying it was a perception we had over here in the UK that the USA supported the IRA.
Regarding Northern Ireland, yes my government did some pretty bad things there, and I think we should do a referendum there and let those folks decide what they want, give it back or let them stay British I really don't care, nor do I care about losing face on the matter, let the people of Northern Ireland decide.

Edit I don't think Britain and Argentina used any Russian gear in 1982, I've been struggling for other examples.
