Today we have stumbled upon the Forum Troll in its natural habitat... Crikey! Notice how fast it strikes, coming out of NOWHERE to deliver a one line attack post in the forums for a game it apparently has no interest in! And look how it riles up the natives so! This one is clearly an aged and experienced Forum Troll! We should all consider ourselves lucky to have gotten to experience such a sight first hand!
That's all for the show this week, please join us again on "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom!"
I guess my whole point is that not all of us like the cartoony graphics, but, of course, the masses of gaming youth out there will love it.
It's sort of like the phenomenon I saw at this one amusement park that was legendary for its frightening Halloweenfest. They had strobe lights, chain saws, the works and it'd scare anybody, even adults. One year they decided to dumb it down for the masses of kids, since kids are mostly their primary customer. Jason the chainsaw wielding freak got replaced with Casper the Friendly ghost, and the park was no longer very scary on Halloween. It got sanitized basically, dumbed down, smoothed over for the masses.
That's what cartoonish graphics do for MMORPG's. Sure, they have their following, and it's big. But it sure would be cool to see a little more realism in the graphics department. Would make for a more immersive game, in my opinion.
[As far as the comment about a Mythic Rep "owning" a potential customer, no one "owns" their customers. The customer always wins, because the customer takes his credit card and goes somewhere else. The guy can go back and brag in the boardroom about how he slammed a former Mythic player (yes, I was in DAOC for a time), but he won't be counting my dollars in this revenue figures.]
Oh, now I got your point. Your point is that your ignorant of the fact that Warhammer games have been around for DECADES...!!
So, my 1983 Warhammer board game of Orcs should be changed to soemthing un-WoW like ...? The characters should'nt resemble the orcs on the box or the mini-figurines..?

Well, I know when I want a game based on a classic series I don't want it to resemble its roots. Thats just insane.
Siehst du mich Erkennst du mich Ganz tief in meinem Herz ist noch ein Platz f?r dich Ich suche dich Ich sehne mich nach dem was ich geliebt hab doch ich find es nicht
The only similiarities between the two are the fact that dwarves, orcs, etc. exist in the world. How many fantasy settings have dwarves, orcs, and the like? Tons.
When you look at peoples comparison when WoW pictures are placed right next to WAR pictures there is a huge difference. While they may look cartoony they are much more detailed and realistic then WoW. The graphics in this game blow away WoW and imo it blows away the graphics of any other game out at the moment other then maybe Lineage II.
Ok, pardon the sarcasm as it is probably going to come out pretty thick.
On graphics...of course its going to be cartoony or in some way non-realistic. In real life I am not 4ft tall, bearded, encased in Mitrhil armor and wielding an oversized hammer of WTFPWNAGE...although at times I wish I was. The particular style of WAR's graphics may not sit well with you but that is pure aesthetics (pardon my spelling too...)
I have also heard gameplay issues mentioned. Most of us (since WAR is in Alpha) have no basis upon which to comment. I know the comparisons to WoW abound and the mechanics in it were fairly polished but I can only hope that Mythic will continue to work their magic and make WAR an even better game. The mechanics in DAOC (when I tried it out about a year and a half ago) did what they were supposed to and did it pretty well. All we can ask for is a well thought out, easy to use and functional interface with which to explore the FANTASY world of WAR.
So...again. WAR is not real. It is FANTASY. Therefore the graphics will NOT be REALISTIC.
Also graphics and pretty sparkles do NOT equal game mechanics...
Strangely looking at the screenshots i cant really see what he means by "cartoony"... it sures doesnt look like WoW, the characters have a more solid and "real" (as real as fantasy can be) feeling and looking than WoW, when i look at wow characters i see, strong colors, "kind of" cell shaded characters, when i look at WAR characters i see iron, greys, metal and lot's of small details, i can almost touch the figurin but without the plastic look , so, no, i dont think they look alike
They don't look cartoony to me, but then the gameplay is my only concern in games... ok that's a lie, if it feels like i'm playing on a shitty old engine, then i'm concerned and simply uninstall it.
You may not think you were trolling, but coming to the WAR section and posting just to say you're not going to give them any money is trolling, whether you accept it or not.
It wouldn't be very Warhammer like if they used 'realistic' graphics, it just wouldn't work. Mythic have done a fantastic job in my opinion. They could quite easily have used the Nintendo 64 graphics WoW uses, but they haven't. They've balanced it much so it looks kind of realistic and gritty, whilst not going as far to have bold colours and such.
I presumed Warcraft was inspired by (either that or copied) Warhammer. WoW was made and released to the masses, but now the grand daddy has come to play, WAR, while not catering for the masses (if i dare say, children) it will be a epic game.
The only way you can compare these 2 games is by content of the world, storyline, imagination and originality. Warhammer is original, it was here first, Warcraft just copied it or took inspiration from it. In that you could say not much imagination went into Warcraft, seeing as all they needed to do was borrow things from the Warhammer world (not the pc game). Even looking at those comparism pictures it's amusing to see that Warhammer used the wealth of artwork from the tabletop games to the comics.. I wonder what Warcraft used?
I have a big beef with the cartoony graphics as well, but, to be realistic; This is a _Warhammer_ MMO, when blizzard made warcraft they completely ripped off the design from warhammer down to the smallest detail. Thats no news, and not really anything wrong with it either, the gaming industry is constantly borrowing (stealing) stuff back and forth. Now what, 15 years later, warcraft is a mmo, and warhammer which warcrafts graphical design is based on is also becomming an mmo, of course they are going to be very similar.
I however would much more like the DaoC (without ToA) style graphics, more realistic and low-fantasy is the shit for me. Things doesn't have to look like cartoons or be stupidly exaggerated just because it's a computer game, that's been proven over and over. But as someone said, gameplay is what prevails, not graphics, if it is fun I will be hooked even if it looks like Scorched Earth.
Personally i dont mind the graphics, if it's a fun game i'll get used to it's look aswell. I was extremly sceptical about wow and i simply refused to buy it, but some friends forced it upon me and while at first i felt really uneasy about the too cartoony look in time i grew to like it.
BUT, to be fair though, there's another side to the look of Warhammer, not just the figurines. And somewhere along the way there was a decission made to go with a more cartoony look. I too would've prefered the 'artwork' look, now THAT's grittylookin :P But.. well, whatever

Well, to be fair we've only seen some gfx for the Greenskins and the Dwarves, the Orcs and the Goblins will look kinda cartoony any way you make them, it's just the way they look, and the dwarves look pretty good in my opinion...
I hope that the overall graphics will be on par with (or even better than :P ) the graphics in Warhammer: Mark of Chaos ... Cause that's just beautifull :P

I'm not bothered by the graphics at all. Poor graphics are what you find in games like Roma Victor. While stylized graphics are found in games like World of Warcraft and Warhammer.

I'm not saying the game looks like WoW. I realize that argument has been done to death already. I do agree that WAR has pretty cartoony graphics, although not nearly as bad as WoW's... I think the screens you posted are a good example of how the graphicws could have been warhammer, but less cartoony.

We are chaos! Chaos is strong! I'm still going to be chaos in that game too. Though I got to say eldar is my second favorite in the RTS genre.

As long as they capture the pure gorey chaos of the source material this game will own. Any game designed with fun large scale pvp at the core has my wallet opening faster than a drunk girl on prom night.
I'm glad you posted those screens Nimuel. I, like many others, dislike the more cartoony approach that WAR is taking and wish they would have taken a step towards artwork instead of the miniatures. I love the Warhammer artwork and I definitely think that graphics that were more realistic (in a fantasy setting) would definitely have still been true to the IP.
I'm definitely still playing this game because the RvR sounds like a blast but I just wish WAR's character models would have taken a more realistic approach.
