After seeing it done with the Japanese servers and the many restrictions put in place on what can and can't be taken and how much, it's something I wouldn't support. SWG is too complex for mergers :P
I didn't hear about that, what restrictions were there? That also could havce something to do with EA since they ran SWG in Japan but I doubt it would be any different for us. Basically, everyone just recieved a free server transfer. Pretty much the same restrictions applied.
That was weak of them...
VERY weak. Many of those who were willing to transfer had issues, lost items or player data, and quit. It was a pretty sad.
IMO, they won't do merges like that. It's way too complicated that way, and would take weeks to get done. I would expect (like someone above stated) they will pack-up ALL structure for one publish, giving all non-houses &PA's a 0 lot value, merge databases based on Server Pops (Bria & the Lowest Server for example), and then give everyone 30 days to unpack. At that point they would perge all packed structures from Datapads to lessen the Database load.
I don't think it's that easy or they probably would have done something like that with the Japanese servers.

It's not easy. And remember, both Servers would need to be packed up to do a clean Database merge. Coding for both servers would need to be the same, and since the Japanese were transfering to active servers, that wasn't possible.
At one of the summits (and quoted in an old thread here if you feel like mining) someone posted a link to the OF's and a thread where someone said they had talked to a Dev about it, and the Dev said a pack up was easy, it was the "little things" like varying Resources & Database Load that were not. I always thought that was funny.

Uh, as far as I'm aware the only new servers to be introduced were the Euro and Japanese servers, the rest were there from the start?
Ok, I did some checking up and 12 were there on launch and the rest were introduced within the first week of launch. They had always planned for the current number of servers though.
Originally posted by pirrg why would they want to merge servers? Pretty much every galaxy has a healthy playerbase nowadays. It declined during the first months of the NGE but it is up to normal again. Not quite pre-cu numbers but its not bad enough to call for a server merger.

The other servers were opened as needed, they weren't released all at once. Yes, that number had always been planned, but they weren't sure they would need that many until the servers started filling up.
I know you really want to believe that the entire PreCU was a ghost town game that no one ever loved, but the fact is that the game that launched was one that more people enjoyed than the game that you people who started later ever played. PreCU was not one unchanged block of game play. The game as it was in 8/2003 was completely different from the one in 8/2004. It still had bugs and balance issues, but the core game was one that held a lot of promise and playability for a lot of people. The changes that came after Raph Koster was no longer in charge sucked the life out of it.

I disagree, many current SWG players are crying out for servers to be merged due to the ghost towns that are now common place (npc cities included). When I played pre-cu I saw players everywhere I went, during the CU my girlfriend noted a drop but there were still plenty playing. After the NGE my Girlfriend informed that the guild, server and game were dead and since everyone had left it no longer felt like an MMORPG.
I see more calling for a merge than those noting how healthy server populations are now, although I could be totally wrong.
Some servers definitely need a merge .
There are only about 5 servers with viable populations out of 25. If they merged everyone else they might have enough population to have 3 more viable ones.

I joined mid July 2003, so only missed out on a couple of weeks of the games history
I know how busy the game was during the first few months it was launched, I remember lagging my way through the crowds. That huge number of people didn't last more then a few months though.

Close, but not quite. I could be off, but as I remember it, it was longer than a week, I think it was a month, and they were rushed out because the Pops were WAY too high, you couldn't log on at peak times, and if you crashed, see you tomorrow.
Also, the Euro Servers were added to ease the East Coast load, and weren't planned on at the time since the Euro box came out well after the US one...

Two things I doubt we will ever see from the devs. Server Merges and Housing reduction. Both for the same reasons as wlel. I don't think they could ever clean it up without really screwing it up.
Not to mention, how would they handle Naming for both character names and guild names? Who gets priority?
There is way to much to mention when this is involved. I think they have higher priorities to attend to rather than something this insignificant.

About the only way they can do it at this point is to close ALL servers and set up 6-7 new ones and force people to transfter.

I don't know why you all continually assert that I didn't argue about anything. Parts of the NGE I thought were kind of cool. Because they were. There were also some atrocities that I had plenty of concerns about, too - and I voiced those. I voiced them in the conference room with Dallas and Julio, and I continue to voice them in the Senate forums. Adamantly. I don't expect you to take my word for it because most of that has been concealed from public view, but quit trying to assert things that you can't possibly prove.
The problem most folks seem to have is that I have chosen to conduct myself in a manner that has allowed me to continue being a part of the Senate instead of doing the "honorable" thing, setting myself on fire on Smedley's front porch in defiant protest and splattering myself all over GarVa's windshield with angst, indignance and lamentation on the public SWG boards. Me getting myself forum-banned wasn't going to help anybody get anything out of the new system.
I've said it before dozens of times, in my role as a Galactic Senator, I do not represent anybody screaming for a rollback, pre-CU and classic servers (or that open source project nobody is allowed to talk about here) - even if I personally think some of that stuff would really be kind of neat. I do serve the interests of folks who genuinely want to try and improve upon the existing, officially supported game and are willing to follow the established community guidelines on the official boards.

As we both know we have been over this more times then I can count... See, I do think you mean well, I really do. BUT supporting what is "EXSISTING" right now is the problem. How you can support what is known as the biggest MMO mess, (even you cannot deny that this is a wreck.)
And you know what... That line about supporting people that wanted to "GENUINELY" to help IMPROVE THE GAME, is bullshit... I DID SUPPORT THEM, I DID HELP, I WANTED TO IMPROVE THE GAME WE HAD... In fact you know damn well all the stupid Betas half the time some of us were in.. you know that I MYSELF DID CARE, if I did not I would have not been part of them, I would not have been in all the PMs with TH or Arjun, or even yourself a couple times... You know Godamn well how much some of us gave a shit.. We were there man time and time again to support things... ALOT OF PEOPLE HERE WERE...
And then the NGE happend, uprooting all that we trusted and helped to make...
How can you support this when YOU KNOW GOD DAMN well what was voiced at the summits? Your role as a GS was to support us, to listen NOT TO CHOOSE What you could listen to.. (For the small group of people that wanted the easy game) ... I know what the people wanted that I met at the summits and in game, Hell you know I know some of your old guild mates... I know Damn well they do not like or supported this mess, quit because of it and won't return to it.
This is not like it is a debate to ask if people want the old game back... Crap man, that is obsurd to think otherwise. Because you accept the NGE for what it is and then say "Well, I will make the best out of it" is bullshit... THAT is the copout... that is where I thought some GS's (OR SHALL I SAY MORE OF THEM) before they quit or left would have stood up more often and expressed how bad this was.
You guys all claimed to listen to the people, well- I know what most of them have said and here we are 9 months later and the game is fucked.. You know it, I know it and so do alot of wise gaming industry people.
Have you seen the posts from some of them on thier own Blogs???? Do you not understand where this is ending up? See, I know that you have the sense to see what is going on with their comments... making excuses and statements is not common posts from these people.
If you guys were all so right then guess what? The NGE would have been a success, plain and simple. Looks like with the Devs TRYING to add back in all the things they swore not to, while not admiting they failed with thier ideas shows this.
In the end I know how this will end up... the one thing I guess I can say is that I stood up for what I thought was right, I have to think that SOE did see all of us, drop from the server, yell at them at the summits, express our thoughts as best we could, cause them to get extra forum mods to control the damage, but let's not forget the server populations and sub- accounts.
The phrase used at the launch of the NGE was "Time will tell" ... guess what it has.
I think the worst part about this is I still think alot of this could have been stopped, I just don't know who will take that responsibility when this is over.

Now, about servers. Tempest opened on Aug 1, 03. I think there were a few others that also opened around then. So yeah, in the beginning they DID need to open more servers. What really started driving people away was the bugs that wouldn't get fixed. That's been the issue since launch. The devs never bothered to try to fix the bugs. I don't think they could pull off server mergers. They would TOTALLY screw that up if they tried.

I want to roast him more then any of you trust me... But I also know him.. which makes it worse.
I loved his group of old Guildys.. they were a class act, no joke.. also until the NGE I think Unagi was a good person that meant well all of the time no joke. He was a good SL corr and he CARED about the game.
I just think now this is all different... I have to think he is subjected to shit just like us..make no excuse I am pissed at him and think this has gone wrong but again.. I just think the NGE did alot of this.

First off, I hold nothing against you, Unagi.
However, you cannot prove that you have voiced critiques, adamantly or otherwise, if you mostly critique the NGE in the Senate forums which are concealed from public view.
You can state that you have done so, but that doesn't mean much as it is very easy to lie especially when the truth cannot be obtained. Further, anything stated by other senators is similarly suspect, as they could be just supporting their fellow senator.
Now, if you were to cut and paste one of the posts where you have adamantly voiced your opposition to certain parts of the NGE that would be different.
Personally, I don't care if you like the NGE or not.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

I was going through this page for the info
Please tell me this is not the same Unagi that attended the (Austin get together to give input on the system we now know as the "NGE").... I just have to think this is someone making a joke of the SOE forum named person.
note: he did seem less "fanboied" if you will at one time...in his defense-- not so carebear driven.
Sorry, Isk - it's the real me.
Dammit... man, I actually thought it was someone being like you or somthing.. no clue.
I swear knowing you went to Austin broke my heart that you did not argue this mess. Sorry man, I use the NGEs success as the fact it was a mistake lol. (kinda hard to argue that 9 months later as "it all worked out fine" lol)

After seeing his posts on the SOE boards, I learned alot about this guy though.

Not to mention, how would they handle Naming for both character names and guild names? Who gets priority?
There is way to much to mention when this is involved. I think they have higher priorities to attend to rather than something this insignificant.

Actually, the problem I have with you is your attitude towards other players. I've read a lot of your stuff in tha past, and you have made good points. I won't flame you for playing, GF plays & a few friends, and if I don't flame them, I won't flame you. I actually respect that you are still trying to improve the game, especially if you enjoy it. Do I sgree it can be saved? No, but to each their own, and I respect that.
That said, you have been extreamly abusive & arrogant towards other players, and you don't treat other's opinions with respect (at least from what I've seen). You're a Senator, you will always draw fire, but you should be able to brush it off and step above it, not wrap it in crap and toss it back...
I hope you stay around here and help to raise the discussions. The more Senators (not to mention non-Fanboi players) on this board, the better for everyone IMO.
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

Listen -- I understand your response in anger, I am more of a ANTI-NGEr as you know but for me please, this will not help anyone with those comments that brazen.
I have known him quite a long time now in threads and posts... from his guild and his conduct. I am against everything he says about the NGE being good, BUT still man I cannot condone that response.
For me please at least kill the name calling like that. -- He can speak somewhat more freely here I think but I just want to avoid the direct name calling like that. (TRUST ME) I feel strongly as you do though.

In a way I am glad to see him, another Bria'n and guild I know.. I have to think that the NGE in a whole has not helped him in anyway.. But at the same time he is human.
