I dont play WOW...I have not played anything since SWG and am about to start playign Guild Wars, but how is WOW not on this sites list of Highest Rated MMO's if sooooooooooooo many people play it?

Because sooooooooooooo many people know how boring it is.
Because a lot of us have gotten to 60, and feel that although 1-59 game is good, the suck that is 60 and the lack of decent PVP are enough to bring a good game down.

Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
McDonald's has sold over 20 billion hamburgers. Clearly McDonalds has the best tasting hamburgers. How is it they aren't a 5 star restaurant? Maybe it's because although millions of people will eat a Mcdonalds hamburger because it's easy and familiar they don't feel it's fine dining.
WoW is a perfectly functioning game. It has familiar quests, races and abilities. It's not buggy and it has a reputable company running it. At the same time it's simplistic, lacks challenge and any originality outside of the Warcraft setting. It's been said many times that if it's your first MMO it's a great MMO. If it's not your first MMO well it's an ok game but it's nothing special.
That is why a website with many veteran gamers would not rate the game as highly as a person who got their first experience with the game. It's not a bad game though.
1) A lot of people have experienced the horror that is WoW post-60, and have over-corrected their previously too high ratings.
2) A lot of people who have never played the game have rated it very poorly simply because WoW is very popular. As you may or may not be aware, if something is very popular, it must also be very bad.

Maybe because at the time of this post we have 428,682 members in these forums. Considering WoW has 7 million players it's safe to assume that if everyone who played an mmo signed up for the forums then the rankings would be alot different.
Its the most popular, so its hated the most. its that simple. WoW truly is the mmorpg today with the highest quality. this is proven by the facts its the mmorpg with the highest reviews, most awards, and biggest subscriber base.
Right. Just because its popular doesn't mean its 'the best'. They are obviously doing something right, but they aren't making it the BEST mmorpg out there....just as everyone said before me.

Highest quality? That is certainly not proven and is certainly quite debatable. I think reasonable poeple can agree that parts of it are quite high quality for an MMO. But there really are a number of other games that have just as high or higher quality in other aspects. And there are a few games that rival it quality wise in areas where it is strong.
Eve and Ryzom certainly have higher quality Sandbox elements. And, in my opinion, EQ2 is a higher quality game with more features as things currently stand as far as the treadmill instance run games like WoW/EQ2 go.
I don't play either WoW or EQ2 anymore, but I had fun with both. I think EQ2 is all around a higher quality game. Its pvp is also much more thrilling than WoW's.
WOW took the main elements of any MMO and made them easy, so people feel acomplished anytime they play.
You SEE your experience bar move If you craft orange , your skill RAISES Money is easy to come by, so its EASY to own the best items, Epic mounts and certain items Quests are very STRAIGHTFORWARD and more
All in all it appeals to the masses, which had never had a taste of an MMO before. But as they are becomming more seasoned they are seeing that WOW is a shallow game.
It's not a bad game, its just not as good as it could have been.

You kinda failed to see why Mcdonalds is so popular. Its not becauses its trying to have the best hamburgers but its trying to be accessable to the known public, people usually eat at MCdonalds cause its cheap, its fast, and its has alot of quality. As alot of 5 star restaurants require some buck, the general public will only eat at those places every once in awhile, but with a cheap place like McDonalds people will generally keep going there, because its fast, and its good food.

It has been given these ratings for a reason. lets start with the fact that every mmorpg has downpoints. sure WoW might not give you as much freedom as EVE or Ryzom, but it really makes up for that with the PVE content. not to mention there is plenty of content. EVE and Ryzom might give more freedom, but the PVE, to say it boldly, downright sucks. then, as a reviewer, you have to make a decision what is more important. PVE gameplay (which makes up for a large portion of every mmorpg) or Freedom that is not that great if you take a closer look at it.
reviewers know what the heck they are talking about. same for the award givers. the 7 million subscriber base proves that those reviewers were right. sure you might enjoy game A more then WoW, or maybe you prefer game B, but that is all opinion. reviewers have to look at the quality parts of the game.
Game numbers vs. game value. Quantity does not equal quality. WoW is good for what it is: an easy portal for new people to the genre to get their feet wet and learn the basic mechanics before moving on to the good games. Also good for the totally anti-social who prefer to never group as the game is basically single-player all the way through with a chat client thrown in and multi-player capability. So, in essence, WoW is the tutorial before you play the real games
I have answered this question before. WoW isn't rated high because people who enjoy it and play it don't go on websites to vote on how great it is They are busy playing it.
It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

what "real" games? Everquest 2? Daoc? all of those play the exact same way like WoW, and are in no means more difficult to play.

Same reason Mc Donalds doesn't get a 5 star rating from food critics.

Because Mcdonalds delivers fast food for a cheap price. not the case with WoW.
Quit bringing up Mcdonalds, the food branch and game industry are two diffrent things, you can't compare them. a previous poster in this thread already proved why the Mcdonalds theory is flawed.

I use it because the analogy is true. WoW is cheap, easy, fast fun. People like it cause it's simple to get into, easy to play and you don't need anyone to play it. Well, till you get to 60 at least.
I play WoW I know how it is. Trying to say otherwise is just misleading to those that don't play. WoW IS the Mc Donald's of MMO's.

While I basically agree with you, I tend to think that people on this website have the same elitist flare as the people who pay $1000 for a 5-star meal at an expensive restaurant, eventhough such meals have notoriously little to eat in them. As for quality, the very few times I have eaten a meal like that mostly just made me wish I was in McDonalds.

Because its a list of the best MMO......
Not a list of the most populated.

How is it that vanilla icecream is the most popular?

Make a difference!
Two reasons:
1) A lot of people have experienced the horror that is WoW post-60, and have over-corrected their previously too high ratings.
2) A lot of people who have never played the game have rated it very poorly simply because WoW is very popular. As you may or may not be aware, if something is very popular, it must also be very bad.
Anyway, that's my Theory.
