Wow at least has an exceptable sized customer base.
Now im not saying wow is the best game out there, im simply sayong that from a business perspective, its the only one ( of the Western MMOs) that comes close to being a true success.
those games running up so much spin, getting review sites to give plugs and then like 2 recent releases, fail to deliver miserably, should be pulled at once. past track records (turbine) should be a big part of the release proccess. it boggles the mind how these inept producers/developers/etc, can continue to talk people with money into supporting the garbage they produce.
and sadly some people are taken in and waste money on the trash.
there are just simply too many niche games, mainstream or otherwise that "deserve to die" because of this i feel mmo' are reall in a stagnated state, trying one upmanship instead of the groundbreaking originality that would make people happy. that would be the groundbreaking something that works.
can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.
Hmm now I'm not going to say any particular game but a "genre" if you will of games in general.
- Endless Grindfests,
These games may appear to look good but when it comes down to it the whole game is grinding, heck even PvP in these particular games is either
1 - Pressing 2-3 buttons constantly to kill you're enemy, whilst standing still, and in some rare cases actually moving 2 - Potion spamming until either you or your enemy runs out of potions
So to sum it up I want all games that, where the only place where grinding is NOT involved is in the character creation (Although this is generally tediously boring with Pre-Sets) to be completely and utterly obliterated.
Oh and lets not forget the trashtalk there is after you get "owned"
WoW...deserves to suvive..not because I like the game (I hate it) but it keeps those immature 13year olds away from other MMO's.
I would say most Korean MMO's don't deserve to survive, There all the same game with a new look...Although a few have pleased me for a little over a month.

SWG... for having developers that consistently take the easy way out,... even when they know it is the exact opposite of what a majority of their subscribers want.
Hmmm... one could really post an entire Hall of Shame here but these ones stand out for me who sadly has played them all....
Basically, all things emanating from, purchased and corrupted by or otherwise foisted on the gaming public by Sony Online Entertainment. Just a quick rundown for anyone who has not experienced these "gems"
EverQuest - A good first gen MMORPG in its day but even saying that is being lenient. The game is rife with outrageous time-sinks even to this day as they try to plaster a pretty face on the same tired game mechanics the game has suffered with for years. It would seem that here was born the ideas that in order to engage, occupy and entertain players, you should be making them camp for endless hours for named spawns, keeping drop rates insanely low for things like epic armor crafting, forcing players to click millions of times before they can craft anything of value, etc. was born. It is as if they deliberately decided that the best way to keep players playing and revenue flowing would be to make sure it takes them forever to advance thier characters and complete the better quests in the game. Only recently have the older areas in the game gotten a badly needed facelift and even so, much of the world looks just as it did in 1999, blocky npcs and all. Evercamp as some call it is legendary for its incredible real life-sucking timewasters instead of real engaging and entertaining content. It's one saving grace is raiding if you like that, which is all that is really left of it today. Even that however, requires an investment of 30 to 40 hours a week to acctually accomplish anything so for those with jobs, families they like to see, other interests, other games, etc. it's not a viable or sane I might add, option.
EverQuest II - Having seen the outcome of Asheron's Call 2, where a new game was launched by a company trying to capitalize on the name brand recognition and lore of a previously successful title, SOE in its infinite wisdom thought to do it all again with EQ2. Sure enough, they succeeded too in repeating the abysmal failure that was AC2, revenue-wise at least. EQ2 was intended to be where WoW is today but of course, it is on the bottom of the MMO ocean instead. Nice going there and I am glad I am not an investor in that company. Naturally, in keeping with thier complete ineptitude in discerning what thier customers would like, they also made this yet another amazingly time consuming venture where basically, only the hardcore need apply, at least if you want to experience the end game such as it is, nevermind perhaps enjoy the fun of raising up multiple characters of various classes. Good luck with that for those of you still there wishing it was something better than it actually is under the pretty face they put on it.
Star Wars Galaxies - Here we have the award-winner for worst waste of a good license in MMO history to date I would say. And what little they had, they destroyed for thier few faithful, leaving the game lost in space and I would venture to say this is permanently so now. The folks at Lucas Arts should pull thier license and shut this abortion of a game down now, wait a couple years, and do it again with a company that is serious about trying to produce high quality content and preferable some track record of actually doing so: Funcom comes to mind. The AO launch debacle effectively murdered what was to become a very good game. Today, even giving it away they can't do much more than perhaps keep what is it, one server up? That of course has nothing to do with what AO was to become, it has a lot to do with foolish management driven by marketing instead of software development people I would think. Hopefully, with that lesson under thier belt, the next one will be a hit for them. These are people who could potentially do Star Wars right. I might have said Mythic as well, but now that EA has aquired them, I have my doubts about thier future also. Look what EA did to the Ultima franchise. It devolved into fighting Todd McFarlane action figures as you play a Samurai basically. And it never did get a decent graphics upgrade. Sure they are doing it now, how many years too late? Yes, they seem to be trying to ressurrect UO but as Yoda would say, "There is no try, there is only do." EA either cannot or will not do it. I have no idea which it is.
Planetside - Oh yes, we are going to shell out a monthy fee for a massive shooter. Not. We have an endless stream of excellent shooters, some of them pretty sizable too, and they cost ZERO per month to play. So, do we really want to play one that is needlessly complex with toons we have to level just to go invade some bases over and over? Well, the sales figures don't lie. I guess it turns out that most of us do NOT want to do this. Surprise, surprise. A little bit simpler and the GW sales model might have worked wonders here but no...
The Matrix Online - I had to save the best for last. With a track record like the above, SOE then takes failure to a whole new level by actually buying a failed MMO and adding that into thier mix of lack luster titles. The wonders never cease at SOE really. I wonder how many hours Mr. Smedley logged this week in any of those games? My guess is if he games at all, he's probably a closet WoW fan but then again, I find it hard to believe that guy is a gamer. The suits run the show at SOE and boy does it show too.
I know you asked for ONE game here and I guess I will cheat a little by lumping this mess together into one account as SOE has done, namely a Station Players Account. This would be the worst waste of time on the market today and if you waste the money on all of that software and all of those expansions to bring it "current" it is surely the biggest waste of gaming dollars today as well. What a laugh that they would bundle time-sinkers like EQ, EQ2, etc. together so the hapless could have absolutely no real life whatsoever, which would need to be the case to advance in say two or three of the above. And just to "sweeten" the deal, you EVEN GET the Station Players games! Aye, these fantastical gems of yesteryear, crafted by then Verant programmers, probably screwing off on the EQ project, are still up and running, sort of. I mean, why play something entertaining and fun like say, X-Box Live arcade when you can play these babies!
How's that for some richly deserved SOE bashing from a customer of years who is ashamed to even admit it. And before I am flamed for this bitter tirade, yes I know I own it all. It is my fault exclusively for allowing myself to waste so many hours and so much money on what turned out to be some of the worst PC gaming I've seen since PC gaming's inception. But life is for learning and as such, I won't even install Vanguard. I've learned my lessons the hard way and at last.
Say what you will about WoW but the fact is, the masses vote with thier wallets and the people have spoken loud and clear. The game does a lot of things right and shows once again that when a developer sincerely tries to listen to, entertain, and give good value to thier customers, they win. Everybody wins. Why is that so hard for so many companies to figure out? My hat is off to Blizzard for moving the genre in the right direction, even if it was evolutionary, not revolutionary. Good enough. I can't wait to see what they and others like them bring to market in the coming years via WoW expansions and new titles.
What many companies don't seem to realize is that the normal people in this world who have maybe 15 or 20 hours top that they want to spend on PC entertainment, which must be shared with competing titles of interest, would be willing to pay for something they can have fun with that can be played and FULLY enjoyed within those time constraints. The games that take notice of this enormous potential customer base will also be runaway successes like WOW has been. It ain't rocket science. The MASSIVE market has not even begun to be tapped the way I believe it will be in the future by companies with management that have a clue.
As for Vanguard saving the day for SOE, I would have to say no, I don't think it will. I wish that I could say yes, but when I hear about things like corpse runs and other old school wastes of time I realize that the same team that brought us EQ has not been paying attention. I think Microsoft figured this out also. Why do you think they sold Vanguard to SOE? Simple. They don't see it as a profitable business venture and I'd have to guess they are going to turn out to be right. The EQ faithful will flock to see it initially whereas EQ2 was such a letdown but then when the rose colored glasses come off, it's not going to be pretty for SOE who's investors by then will probably be screaming for them to get out of this market altogether and go make money elsewhere doing what they actually do well.
That's my take on worst MMORPGs in general and SOE's bundled offerings in particular.
Originally posted by Orthosin No question in my mind EQ2, once vanguard comes out EQ2 will serve no true purpose.
I sure wouldn't bet real money on that. Maybe it'll be the demise of EQ since it seems to be much more similar to that... don't know. It has a lot of the same, somewhat outdated, features as EQ. I do know that reading about McQuaid's ideas on MMORPGs that I'm not the least bit impressed. He seems to like all the things most people want OUT of their games these days... not in them. Maybe there will be an initial rush to play, considering he has such a recognisable name, but I predict subscribers dropping like flies when the "free" month ends. It'll make a nice addition to SOE's Station Access, though.
