lol, I already mentioned this in the Manifesto thread. Someone thought a duel system should please both PvP and carebears alike, and I had to tell them how it does not. Exact same thing as you said. I want that freedom, that choice to avenge myself for whatever reason I choose.
Some people are just anti-competitive and do not want to compete with other people. They do not want to show others that they are better than them, or they do not want others to beat them. Either way, it is someones right to not have to compete with other people.
I just do not understand why this is so hard to understand...
If the game requires competition between players, then anti-competitive people should not be playing it. They have no right to complain, they should have known that is what the game was about. But, on the flipside, it works the same way. If there is no PvP play in the game, people who want PvP play have no right to complain either.

This is my problem. There are no MMORPGs out right now that fit my style. Most games try to compromise to please both PvPers and carebears, or they are just straight-forward carebear games.
I would like to know why people love PvP games, and why all games even those that shouldnt be PvP are involving PvP aspects.
A point of contention in the MMORPG I play is the Arena, the people that flock to the arena are Anti-RP and try to ruin the game for others, I've noticed that most people that are Pvp pro, feel they have to prove something to others.
Originally posted by geld PVP and Non PVP are as different as chess and solitaire. There are those who get thrills from competition. From rising up to the challenge. Knowing that you defeated another human opponent in a fair fight. Knowing that he is fully aware of the loss, and will most likely plot his revenge. Or losing in a fair fight, then working our way back, and claiming your revenge. Then there are those who keep away from competition. The game is a personal challenge. Lets not keep score. We are all winners, if we work together. Knowing that you overcame challenges, but did not step on anyones toes, make anyone feel bad in the process. Everyone walks away happy.
Who says pvp has to be about keeping score? This is exactly where so many people get confused. When I was in third grade, I used to not talk to anyone. Conversation scared me, especially with older people. It seemed like for a while any time I tried to get attention I just made my self look silly. There were other people who always got attention, and sometimes I would do the same things as them and it wouldn't work for me. If I did get some attention, such kids would always try and steal it from me.
Long story short, competition is everywhere. Do I freak out over conversation now? No because I grew up. Kids always used to play games and if they didn't win they wanted a do over. Real life games between adults are more friendly. When I was 16 I used to be like the people here and raise my voice in arguments just because It made me mad someone disagreed with me. Since then I grew up. When I first played mmorpgs I got mad when someone pked me. Now its just a game.
Why do you think people play mmorpgs rather than just sit around talking with their friends. Why do people play sports and set themselves up for the possibility of losing? Because the friendlier the competition the less it feels good to win. The problem now is just that even for experienced pvpers the system allows it so that the competition becomes like a blood feud or something. The perfect spot is to place it at the same level as say 2 baseball teams playing each other. Except a mmorpg can be so much better because rather than have any time to trip over it when you lose it can be set up so that you just get right back into the game. PVP is not inherently bad to anyone.

PvP to me is the ultimate interaction between people on an online game. I see no need for me to play an online game if I can't get that kind of interaction. I understand some people like the interaction that's presented in a co-op style of play and even just the interaction of socializing.
As for why games that shouldn't be PvP are involving PvP aspects, I have no idea except that the developers think they have to please everyone. In my opinion, when they do that, they are compromising their gameplay.
There will always be people who are Anti-RP and there will always be people who try to ruin the game for others. I don't think they are mutually exclusive though. There are also those people who are very competitive and do think they have something to prove to others (this is a typical guy behavior that applies even outside of a MMORPG).
PvP doesn't have to be just battling each other or PKng. It could be spying on each other, sabotaging one another, etc. Unfortunately, not many games incorporate this into their gameplay. I think the first generation of MMORPGs wasn't really prepared for how people will react with each other online. Therefore, the rules were hard to come up with on how to reward or penalize someone by their interaction with other players. Second generation games aren't handling it much better. Once they get out of the mode of D&D and EQ, they'll start being creative and make games that balance those PvP problems and it won't be much of an issue anymore (no more of these long thread).
Also, welcome to the forums. I haven't been here that long myself.
- Pure competitors, those love PvP no matter what. (spot that can be compared: Boxing, baseball, basketball, hockey...)
- Friendly competitors. Those dont like direct combat with others players for a reason or another, but they actually crave for a competition. (I fall here unless game based turn where I crave for PvP, real time game = no PvP no matter what, I dont bear defeat at another player hand in real time, as simple as that) The success of someone should not mean anything bad to anyone for players in that category, those players dont crave to remove anything from anyone(which is PvP), they just want to do stuff better then others. (sport that can be compared: racing, throwing, most of the stuff we see in the Olympic things fall here...)
- Cooperators. Those folks have my upmost respect and I wont say anything here, I understand them the less and yet I am with them the most! Yet, they certainly dislike both of the above, they flee the PvP and dislike competition, no matter how friendly, yet, they bear it and give me a place in their group anyday! (sports that can be compare: Skying(not in front of judges), skating, surfing, boats in general....)
Most of the arguments you hear is between the competitors and the friendly competitors which clash endlessly, cooperators dont argue much and try to find a peacefull solution while the other 2 put oil on the fire!

Have you tried Shadowbane? If you are a pure PvP'er, than this is the game for you...
Shadowbane is a horrid game, its laggy, its jumpy, it should of been released 5 years ago. Not to mention when you get in a guild that isnt the complete newbie underdog, you have no one to attack! Overall, the game as well lacks content, and PvP in that game doesnt give you very much control.

I think some people play online games not to become the Uber L337 Character, but rather, to explore an immersive world with your friends, meet new people, socialise. Maybe try to contribute to the game world. Maybe they want respect in a positive way, from always helpng others. There are plenty of reasons.
Also don't try to lower the competitiveness of your PVP system, or else you will be excluding the hardcore PVPers. IMO the perfect PVP system involves a definate setback to the loser. The victor can claim the loot from the loser. There should be racial differences and such that will encourage PVP via race vs race. Players can ambush other players and kill them quickly, before they have much chance to defend themselves. These are just some things I see in the perfect PVP system. If you exclude these things then you will find some people will start liking your PVP system less.
There is a reason why there is not one game in the world that EVERYONE likes.

Actually I think there will be a game that the whole world would like. A virtual world, I mean think about it, ever wanted to blow up the IRS headquarters because they wont quit stealing from you? Well in a virtual world, you can! With no consequences.
Ever wanted to see what its like to be a fugitive! In the virtual world you can! Ever wanted to see what it feels like to drown, but not really drown?! In a virtual world you can!

I think a game with NO consequences will get boring quickly. I mean, what happens when you've blown up the IRS, drowned, and done everything else there is to do? If there are no consequences, then nothing will happen except you feeling satisfied that you've done it. There needs to be consequences, thats what will make a game truly last IMO. How about this? Once you've blown up the IRS, other players would come after you, ones that were hired by the government to catch the fugitive. You will either run and hide, or stand and fight. Maybe you could disguise yourself, then infiltrate the government headquarters and hack into their systems, and remove all records of yourself. Or maybe you will become the leader of a large criminal organisation ready to start a revolution to take down the corrupt government. Whatever you like. If there are No consequences, then PVP will be rather boring. If you kill someone, what happens? nothing. They can come right back and try to kill you, what then? there must be consequences, they will die, maybe be reborn or something, but you steal their equipment that they've been working so hard to get. Thats what will make the game fun for me.

I never said there wouldnt be consequences, what I'm saying is that it'd be truely virtual. I'd also think that the game would have to have, yes, dare I say it, PERMANENT DEATH!! AHHH!!! Hide the children!
Be an assassin, a corrupt dictator. Would definitely be interesting. Also would be a good way to vent your anger, pick up an MP-5 and go physcho...

Permanent Death. Now you're talking. I wish there was a decent MMORPG with permant death full PVP. That is how I picture my ideal MMORPG
how about this idea? it's permanent death unless you're in a guild. A guild could have a crystal that brings you back to life. That way you will have all the newbies begging to join a guild, and the guildmasters will decide whether they're worthy etc. Could get them to perform tasks/quests to prove their worth. Also your guild could defeat another guild by destroying their crystal. Just a thought.

I am currently waiting for Saga of Ryzom, which was going to have permadeath, and GvG style PvP. But in the end it seems they scrapped the idea as there are sooooo many things that could go wrong with lag, connection and the like, I mean, could you imagine if your high lvl character was permanently killed by a newbie while in lag limbo? I think Permadeath will have to wait until technology has improved considerably.

Well, I was talking modern day style MMRPG, although I suppose there could be ways to bring back to life in a way. Such as those shockers or whatever they're called the doctors use, CPR, etc.
I say the government of the world should unite! AND BRING ABOUT THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY THING OF THE CENTURY! A VIRTUAL WORLD, THATS A GAME! Whoot, world peace, and tons of fun!

i don't like the idea of permadeth at all. you are supposed to die in games. there should be temporary penalties, yes. but a mmorpg is a long-term game and you work so many hours/days/weeks/months/years on your character...the possibility of permadeth is not at all appealing to me.
just seems sad to me that probably 99% of people who hate pvp only hate it because they were unsuccesful at it and it flawed their game play.. seems a petty reason to debate it out of MMORPG's they're meant to be tough.. live with it
Ryzoms answer to permadeath was to have descendants, you put a certain amount of effort into buying your 'child' some training while you live, and then when you die you just move in, and while you would not be as powerful as before, you would not be a total newbie. I don't think it would work in any game were death happens like 3 times in a big raid.... but it is an interesting thought for a more relaxed kinda game
"No one who likes PVE combat can say they don't like PVP combat. It's an invalid opinion. It's like saying you like to eat apples that stay edible and tasty for 1 week, but you don't like apples that stay edible and tasty for 2 weeks. It's just plain retarded. PVE is the same as PVP, except in PVE a dev programs a robot to fight you, where in PVP the player fights you directly"
I would tend to agree with this post about this subject, i personally do not tend to like PvP, i enjoy PvE because the fights tend to be fair, and because i tend not to lose them (i do not like losing - and i guess most people are of the same opinion). What i do not like about PvP is that the fights are not always fair, i often get killed by players of a much higher level, more often than not its in one hit so thats how much chance i stand. I beleive this is why lots of people hate PvP. If you can spend hundreds of hours on the game and reach the highest level then PvP can become fun, because it is more or less just like PvE but with better AI (Indeed just 'I'). One more thing i would say is that some people just arent good at PvP, so why must they be force to do it.
To say that somebody MUST like PvP is foolish, and to say PvP is better is foolish, it is all a matter of opinion and there are many reasons why people dont like PvP.
Ps: Dont call me a carebear just cos i dont like losing. You would hate if you got shot just going about your day to day business in real life, so i hate getting shot while doing my online business (whatever that may be at the time).
Is it me but do i find the struggleing tie between Beta Rulz and I Could Care Less hilarious. I mean i voted for i could carelss because i could do just that...care less. But why is it people feel that PvP is a necassity.
And have you noticed that nearly all PvPers are just dicks wanting to be an even bigger dick in the virtual world? They run about killing others laughing about all their victory...most hilarious though is when them thereselves are killed and they throw a humongous fit...............................
To conclude this post, the world is full of dicks and assholes...

Whoot, world peace, and tons of fun!

just seems sad to me that probably 99% of people who hate pvp only hate it because they were unsuccesful at it and it flawed their game play.. seems a petty reason to debate it out of MMORPG's they're meant to be tough.. live with it
"No one who likes PVE combat can say they don't like PVP combat.
Muahahahahahahaha
MUAHAHAHAHAHA
Is it me but do i find the struggleing tie between Beta Rulz and I Could Care Less hilarious. I mean i voted for i could carelss because i could do just that...care less. But why is it people feel that PvP is a necassity.
And have you noticed that nearly all PvPers are just dicks wanting to be an even bigger dick in the virtual world? They run about killing others laughing about all their victory...most hilarious though is when them thereselves are killed and they throw a humongous fit...............................
To conclude this post, the world is full of dicks and assholes...
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
