Mine are, in no particular order:
1) Syphon filter...this is the game that got me to buy a playstation. I never had so much fun shooting out lights in my life
2) Techmo Bowl...ah the fun of 2d football...no one could stop me with tha raida's...Bo Jackson rules!!!
3) Everquest...somehow kill...camp...kill...camp...loot...sell...buy...was, and still is, so damn entertaining
4) KOTR...Ah the pure bliss of finishing this game as both a dark and light sided jedi...SWG, bow down to the greatness that is KOTR
5) GTA 3...nothing like jacking a car, killing a hooker, blowing up police cars, and becoming the coolest gangster in video game history.
Those are mine...What are yours??? ...Xaldor
Comments
EWW KOTR is crap. I'll agree with you on the other ones though. For me:
1. EQ
2. Day of Defeat
3. City of Hero's
4. Betrayal at Krondor
5. Diablo 2
6. Pool of Radience
7. All the NHL games
8. Sim City
9. Space Invaders
10. Missile Command
Crap I had more favorites than I thought.
City of Hero's Characters:
- Black Samurai - Mezmo Man - Flare -

CoH even in beta is close to the best, most fun game I have ever played.

Here's my strange list. I'll freely admit that there are "better" games out there than these five. But these are the five that meant the most to me in some form or another.
In no particular order.
1. Sonic CD - Yes, I owned a Sega CD. So why Sonic CD? I loved the music. It was the first time I really noticed the background music in a game and appreciated the work behind it.
2. Gemstone 3 / Dragonrealms - Both by the same company, Simutronics. I played these games between 1996-2000. Turned me into the MMORPG nut that I am today.
3. Chrono Trigger - Needs no paragraph.
4. Metal Gear Solid - See above.
5. Mazan: Flash of the Blade - This little known arcade game from Japan is one of my favorite games of all time. Finally a game lets me pick up a katana to pretend I'm a samurai, blocking throwing knives and cutting down enemies. When my Japan vacation was over, I left my specific Mazan as the number one highest scoring player. Then signed my name completely illegibly (let's see you try to spell your name, in Japanese, using motion capture sword )
Of course, we could add the Warcraft series, Starcraft, City of Heroes, Goldeneye, Sim City, KOTOR, Max Payne, a ton of arcade games (anyone remember the Simpsons arcade game?), anything with Mario or Link, and a ton of old Nintendo games. But then we'd be here all day.

Top 5 Ramadin not top 10...
Here are mine:
1. Duke Nukem 3D- The greatest game of all time. If you haven't played this you can't call yourself a gamer. Bitch.
2. Command and Conquer series- Oh how many hours I played this. I'd count but I'm not good at multiplying with 4 digit numbers.
3. Half Life- Another game for the true gamer.
4. BF1942- Goes without saying how kool this game is.
5. GTA- I learned how to drive with this game.
If this were a more than 5 top games thread I would say FF games next. But it isn't. Ah what the hell.
6. FF series
Also:
7: Star/Warcraft
8. Metal Gear Solid
9. Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies- The GREATEST last level of all time. You may quote me.

Dangit, I forgot Sonic and Warcraft.
City of Hero's Characters:
- Black Samurai - Mezmo Man - Flare -
-----------------Censored------------------
1. final fantasy 7 - my first videogame... ever. also the first and only game ever to make me cry. also its when i started appreciating music, before i played it i didnt really like any music. it really broadened my horizons to music and games. so it was very important to me since i played it at a young age, it holds a special place in my heart.
2. ape escape - MONKEYS!!!! MONKEYS MONKEYS MONKEYS!!!!!!! MONKEYS!!!!!!! oh yea... it was also very entertaining, best platformer ever to me. and was "revolutionary" in that it required a dual shock to play, which way back then was apparently pretty big.
3. doom - even with our pc's that will be able to play doom 3 at (nearly) full settings, you cant deny the greatness of the original doom. me and friends still have lans with it along with other of the top fps's of today.
4. warioare inc. - so... addictive... naw, just one more game... one more... one... more... ill get back to you later... damned nostrils, playing hard to pick...
5. counter-strike - as much as i look down on it now (playing raven shield), if it wasnt for this, among other half-life mods, i might have never gotten into pc gaming. hell, computers can actualy build a career, my excuse for playing so much :P.

Hmm, It would be nearly Impossible for me to rank them in order, so MY TOP 5 IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:
1. Super Mario Brother 3- Oh come on, how could someone not like this game? This is what was the bridge to all my gaming today. Well sure, I did play games before this (I did play the original mario on nintendo, yay for me), but SMB3 is what started to pick up my interest for games, and who doesn't want to bash some people with a hammer in the hammer suit? COME ON! (And of course the fact that some crazy japanese people can beat the game in 11 minutes, such a high quality game aint it?)
2. Final Fantasy IV (2 if we are talking American style) - This game was absolutely awesome, I loved every minute of this game. All you young schoolers would be like (OMG wtf, FFIV? Nah it's al about FFVII+) believe me, every FF before FFVII was 10x better than FFVII and on. Especially IV, this game was supremely awesome. This I could proudly say kicked up my appreciation for RPG's.
3. Runescape - NOW BEFORE EVERYONE ERUPTS ON ME!!! I'm sure 99% of you would go (WTF, why would you rank that as a top 5!!!!!111onetwoten) well simple, Runescape is what started my MMORPG fever, without it, I would have never become the MMORPG freak/computer/programming freak that I am today, so I have no choice but to put it as a top 5, without it, my life would be so different o_O.
4. Sonic 1 - Oh man, what a game, WHAT A GAME! Sonic 1 was one of the greatest games of all time (hence, in the top 5). I loved it, come on, who doesn't want to be a speedy little hedgehog? I do I do . This game was amazing, words cannot describe the amazingness. Though I never bought many games for the genesis, I was very happy that I bought the genesis, because I had sonic on the system. Let's not for get the incredibly scary underwater music, when you are running out of breath and you have to go up for air, you guys remember that, scared that **** out of me (I was like 7, give me a break).
5. Megaman 2 - Oh come on, shalt we not forget our good friend Megaman? I loved the series, I loved every bit of it. And since I can't put every single megaman on the list, let's put the first one that I played, Megaman 2!!! What a game, what a game, busting up some monsters with meh high quality pellets (no mega buster or uber buster or sword or whatever), while desperately trying to get through quick man's level (any of you megaman 2 players, you guys know how annoying quick man's level was :P) Oh man, good times, good times.
Well there you have it, though I am an mmorpg freak now, I still have to go back to my roots, because games of the early 90s late 80s were so much better than what we have today :P.
TOP 5 GAMES OF ALL TIME is not a title that can be earned with a short attention span. Every game has to be compared to what what it is now, what did it do for the industry, and what was it at the time. My top games are oldies, but they are the road map that got us from sprites to 3D, and from linear gameplay to the open ended MMOs.
Railraod Tycoon - Because Sid Meier is a genius.
Pirates! - Because Sid Meier is a super genius.
Gunship! - Damn, Sid Meier and Microprose get a lot of credit for the early days.
Mechwarrior and Mechwarrior 2 - both absolutely groundbreaking when they were released.
Wing Commander and Wing Commander 2 - Because they changed gaming from what it was to what it is today.
For honorable mentions, I would like to thank,
Galaga - for a game not afraid to shoot.
ZAXXON - for teaching us about scrolling landscapes.
ORION - For being the first multiplatform, multiplayer, modem connectable game... in 1984.
Everquest - You may not be what you once were, but you did move the genre from obscurity.
OK, again in no particular order:
1) Civilization - Holy smoke! I literally played this game for 24hours straight, and it was SINGLE PLAYER. For those of you who don't remember Civ or Civ 2, I feel sorry for you. It's hard, from a 21st century perspective, to realize how groundbreaking this game was. A true variation of chess, Civilization was an experience like no other. Turn based combat combined with diplomacy and the ascendancy of civilization was an irresistible package. An incredible accomplishment.
2) Castle Wolfenstein - No, I don't mean the 3D precursor to Doom and Quake, I'm talking about the original Apple II game that ran in 48 K (yes K) of memory. You found yourself deep inside a Nazi castle with nothing but a gun and 6 bullets. The game actually spoke about 8 German phrases (this was 1981!!!) Your task was to escape. Along the way you stole uniforms, bulletproof vests, grenades, schnapps, and hopefully the plans to Operation Rheingold. Escape was a major accomplishment. Written by Silas Warner and published by Muse, this was arguably the best game produced for the Apple II.
3) Ultima IV - Richard Garriott's RPG series hit its peak with this game which introduced a character known as "The Avatar." The player was forced to make choices that weren't stark right vs. wrong, and bad behavior actually affected the player's standing. Later games furthered the adventures of the Avatar, but none were as refreshing or as iconoclastic as this game. Every veteran CRPG player will list this game in his top 10.
4) EverQuest - Love it or hate it, EverQuest made the MMORPG genre what it is today. It wasn't the first and many will argue it wasn't the best, but EQ was one of those titles that came along at the right time when everything was coming together. Online gaming, consumer internet access, first person viewpoint, and a social chat system were among the things that started to hit their stride in 1999, and EverQuest was the binding system that brought it all into one magical package. Dubbed "EverCrack" for its addictive nature, thousands of people played and continue to play this title and its expansions. Even people who left the game years ago will still tell stories of their adventures in Norrath.
5) Elite - The seminal space trading game. Created over 20 years ago, people still play the original and many have tried to capture the elusive soul of this game. Almost any space commerce simulation developer will mention Elite and compare his game to that title. As simple as it sounds (buy low at base A, travel to base B, sell high), there was something unique here that many will argue has never been recaptured in over two decades of attempts.
Honorable Mention
-----
Old timer.
I'm going go with my personal list, rather than something I could back up with facts. Nothing I hate worse than having to priase a game I hated becuase it did well on the market, or had some new feature everyone but me thought was nifty.
Chess - it's a real thinking mans game. If you can master chess, you can master a great deal of things.
Elite - I played this endlessly for a year or so on my Commador 64. I love this game, I'd still play it if I could find the image again.... It's a space flight simulator, ray trace graphics you fight priates and ferry around goods from one space station to another to buy better gear for your ship. While search for quests to do. I could go on about details,
Space Quest - If you didn't play this line, you really need to. (up until they became VGA)
Barren Realms Elite - not to be confused with Elite this was the 1st on-line game I ever go into. I think it was '89 or so. Those are darn poly-tech kids, we used to wage constant war on them from several states away, it would takes days for our ships to get passed from BBS to BBS to find it's way to CA without making a long distance phone call.
VGA planets - I love turn based warware games, VGA Plantes was a little chessy even for it's day. But it something I looked forward to each day. Something no other game offered. It did suck to lose a 6 month long game.
TradeWars - another Door game classic. Played this on about 20 local BBS's. If you didn't, well the early 90's must have been far more meaniful to you.
Llamatron - I just like to say "Llammatron", you can't say that and frawn. Isn't that what playing games is all about?
Hunt the wumpus - the very 1st video game I ever played. My dad soldered together are 8088 from zip lock bags of chips, it booted to basic, and we coded this game from a book I believe. I can't tell you how exciting it was. My bother and I played this game for months. (until we got ahol
You can play it here: http://www.taylor.org/~patrick/wumpus/

Make no mistake, MMORPG's are not games, they are hobbies. If you have a job, you'll need to give up watching TV in order to play one. You'll be better off for it.

Achievers realise that killers as a concept are necessary in order to make achievement meaningful and worthwhile (there being no way to "lose" the game if any fool can "win" just by plodding slowly unchallenged). -bartle

I am happy to see there are a few other people like me who like the Civ type game too, instead of just action games
My list would have to be
1 Civilisation
2 Ascendancy - Which was kinda alien civilisation, taking over solar systems but it was cool cos each race actually had a different skill unlike the normal Civilisation
3 I am gonna show my age here and say I used to like the old text based RPGs from companies like Infosoft, I mean sure there were no pictures, but you could get generators for em and write your own and pass em around which I think was fun
4 EQ has to go in, cos even though it is not cutting edge any more it really did introduce me to online games, and kept me hooked for almost 3 years
5 And.... I hate to say it but I used to love Tetris, it was a classic of its day and even though it was really quite mindless it would keep me amused for ages (especially once i found a 3D version)
(I am sooo old, lol)
Very difficult to pick 5 so heres just a few of my favorite all time games
In no particular order:
FPS:
Counter-Strike: It's been around so many years now and still has countless people playing it, including me i've been playing since beta 5.2 the good old days.
RTS:
Red Alert 1&2: My fav RTS of all time. I was thinking about Dune for a moment but these really got me into the multiplier side of RTS' every weekend i'd play a few games with a friend of mine and for 30mins we'd have a ceasefire and just build up army's of hundreds of tanks... the rushes while laggy were just beautiful
Warcraft Series: Who hasn't played those?!?!
Adventure:
The Monkey Island Series: Till this day my all time favorite games.. look theres a 3-headed monkey!!!
While im at it i might as well mention Day of the tentacle as well lucasarts is just brilliant with funny adventure games.
MMORPG:
DAOC: Well it's been my favorite mmorpg so far and was very difficult to leave especially the community there
Lineage I : While i didn't end up playing it for very long it was fantastic
Fighting Games:
Tekken Tag: The game never leaves my ps2
Street Fighter 2: what can i say?... Hadoken!
Mortal Kombat: Loved the game, i was a sub-zero freak. surprisingly i also loved the movies unlike most people and of course i must mention the techno mortal kombat theme song.... its still great.
