I'm a WoW fan. I think a lot of players on this board feel WoW is too easy, features boring quests, or focuses too much on grinding. I've also heard complaints about the way the expansion is taking the game, the way the graphics look, etc.
Also, there are some people on this board who enjoy niche games. That is, games that aren't fantasy MMORPGs. I see a lot of people who are also waiting on new games which promise to be different from WoW. People who are burned on on WoW are often the first to speak when the topic is brought up.
mostly hardcore players who didnt like the fact that casual players could enjoy a game, or players who for some reason or another didnt like the game and get aggrivated at the fact that the game has 8 million+ players
Because MMORPG.com users tend to be old school mmor's that remember what an mmorpg is supposed to be about.
Its a solid, well made game, ill give it that, but content-wise, lets put it this way... WoW is the brittney spears (back when she was still singing) of mmorpgs. Well polished, looks like it should work, but all in all, bad taste. Makes lots of money, but that dosent make it good.

Right on the money man. This is really one of the best post ive seen dealing with this topic.

That analogy doesn't make sense. Every singer has fans, stalkers and a line of haters who nothing better else to do, but to whine and moan while reminding us that this singer will eventually hit rock bottom one day. Kind of like what you're doing now.
I don't really hate it. I just don't play it anymore. Its one of the few games I actually do not want to go back to because I did many of the things I set out to do.
Its reminds me of arcade games. For example, back when Mortal Kombat 2 came out and everyone was trying to figure out all the fatalities it was really popular. Once I figured everything out and beat the game with every character and learned all the moves I was done. I never really went back to play the game anymore, ever.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Yes, and what do you say when those "whiners" turn out to be entirely correct? The fact is, WOW has some serious failings. All games do to one degree or another. You can like the game and admit its weak points to yourself and others, come on now, just try it.

You can like the game and admit its weak points to yourself and others, come on now, just try it. While you're busy hating, people are having fun. And one day WoW will close it doors permenantly as no game will last forever, but will the former players be angry? Nope, they'll have fond memories of the times they raided, pvp'ed and hanged out with their buddies. Meanwhile, you continue hating, telling the players leaving WoW that you "told them so," but they'll merely smile and ask you what game did you play that had the most influence on your life and was able to impact the world the way WoW did.
You'll think for a moment of course and realize none of the MMORPGs were able to wrap you up tightly it's world and making your forget there was world out there. You'll realize too late that WoW was the game for and it offer everything you want, but you were to selfish to realize it. You want the game to be exclusive to your need and you totally forgot that game is trying to everyone else too. Think about it, every time a MMORPG cames out, you wanted that game to hold a candle to WoW, offer the same feeling as WoW did all while having content exclusive to you. WoW was the game that motivate you to play other games, even if it was out of sheer hatred. And with WoW dead, you have nothing else to hate and no motivation to go on and other games. And with WoW gone, other games will have nothing to aspire to, resulting even worser MMORPGs than we have now.
You don't have to play WoW, but you shouldn't have WoW. It's waste of time since it's just a game. Rather than lingering on the negative aspect of the game, try focusing on the good qualities and the happy times you had to continue motivating you to play MMORPGs and hope for the future that other gaming companies will do their best to keep the dream WoW started. What dream you ask? To bring haters and fanboys together under website and it's forums to discuss their opinions and ideas to give future developers something to strive for.
Most MMO developers now feel driven to copy that POS because its so successful instead of trying something different and making their own unique games. Its WOW that is responsible for the ruination of games that were once good like SWG who have turned what was once a unique and fantastic game into a WOW wannabe.
Its by the grace of God that we at least still have a couple of companies like FUNCOM and CCP who are brave enough to do their own thing despite what the rest of the market is doing.

people should strive to talk about the positives more than negatives, i mean if a game gave you enjoyment then it accomplished its task, and if you dont like something about it then go play a game that you think is better.
i know this is SOMEWHAT skewed because quite a few players dont know about many MMO's, but WoW does have 8 million players, and they wouldnt be playing if they didnt find it fun for some reason or another. When dealing with games EVERYTHING is based on opinions, and WoW is (based on the opinions of 8 million gamers) a fun game. You dont have to agree with it, but then again you dont have to muckrake up all the apparent "flaws" it has
Because it f*cked it up for everybody else...... Add City of Heroes and City of Villains to that list. They had one of the best, most polished MMO's out there. When CoV launched they tried to add PvP which turned into a disaster. It led to a cluster of "balancing changes" that really ruined some play sets. Now they are adding an auction house and loot system. I feel as though they are are just trying to copy WoW's sucess when they should concentrate more on what made them great to begin with.
Go into any of the PvP zones on that game and they are always dead. Not to mention all of the bugs implementing PvP caused. I can only guess that implementing the auctions and loot will cause as many if not more. Those are not the kind of things you can just add to a game that has been out for three years.
I'm not one to bash WoW, or any other game really, but just for my two cents I did not enjoy it at all when I tried it. I hope other developers take note and do their on thing and not copy WoW. Not everyone wants a PvP/raid game.
I agree... I hope developers have the sense to not 'copy' WOW.
I have played it, I enjoyed it, I stopped enjoying it; so I stopped playing it.
I can break down the entire programming/marketing strategy used by Blizzard for you, but it's not worth my time. With the incredible amount of money that Blizzard has generated and the current/future resources for MMO development they have at hand now will be interesting to see in the future.
However, I'm looking forward to future MMO productions in hopes that something new and revolutionary arises from companies such as SOE, CCP, Blizzard, Sigil, ECT. Developers, large and small, deserve appreciation regardless of anyones opinions.

Im not going to pay for any crap game. WOW is my kind of crap.
I feel sorry for you people that don't have a MMO to play.

to me every mmo "copies" a little bit from one another even though the storyline is different they all got the same theme (kill, grind, quest, craft) and thats jsut how games are...i've played WoW like it for a bit and stopped playing, but i agree that they should make something new instead of copying from other mmo's...
but to me most haters seem to hate it due to its population...even though its 8 million strong that doesnt mean they dont play other mmo's while they play WoW...i can tell you that while UO was great back in its day i played EQ as well when it got boring...and switched on and off...everyone gets tired of playing one mmo, thats why theres so much variety you can alternate between...
but if they try to compete with WoW i can tell you that no one's going to break that record for a good couple years, but hey i bet thats what all those money bugging company will always try to do...hell WoW is probably in the guiness book of records for getting that much people to play, and i can also tell you that UO is in the book of records for the longest lasting mmo as well...so which game is better? who knows, people got thier own opinions...
i hate wow but not because its populations, i hate it because some great mmo's will never be noticed and shut down because they arent competing too well against WoW...
If a gaming company is trying to company WoW then they weren't interest of the players from the get go. And WoW's success should never be the reason a valid reason as to why a developers can deliever an original product or be successful themselves.
First, I will say I played WoW for quite some time and had a blast. The game is well done and makes it well worth the price to play for a bit. Let me expalin where I think the hate comes from... There are so many people who are brand new to MMOs and WoW is there very first one. Most people's first experience in the MMO world is the best it gets. I know I have played better games since my first MMO, but I will never be able to enjoy one as much. I didnt really care how buggy or how limited the game was...it was just too much fun. Most people here have been there done that in several MMOs and have a very high tolerance for game enjoyment. The grind/raid/pvp bit has been done over and over (WoW did a very good job in that aspect). They want a game that actually adds content in terms of a variety of things to do when you log in. They want a game that presents more of a challenge and actually takes advantage of a huge diverse community of gamers that have come together. Most people here don't hate the people who play WoW...they are scared that the MMO world has taken a step back in innovation. WoW has not brought anything new to the genre....they did however, make a quality product wich has made a huge amount of money.
One day, after you have several years of MMO's under your belt, your gaming tastes will mature and you'll understand why people have come to hate it. I played it for quite a while... had a good time, appreciated it for what it was, and then moved on. I don't hate it, just don't have any more goals to achieve in it.

WoW is an extremely well polished and often fun game. That being said gameplay and lore wise its also fairly shallow and it does not give the player any influance over the gameworld at all. This leads to many long term players and MMO veterans feeling left wanting. Sure its fun but even the fun gameplay will eventualy get boring.
While most existing MMOs are not as polished and many are not as instantly fun alot of them do offer what WoW does not which is depth. Be it crafting, world shaping, PvP, story, raiding or even thing such character creation. For some people this results in a more enjoyable long term experience for many and a more satisfying one.
In short I guess what Im trying to say is WoW is a great game but its like Diablo, alot of people play through it a couple of times but its not the sort of game you can expect many people to play and play and not get tired of it.

uhh..have you ever even played WoW? I no longer play, but thats because i no longer have time to play any MMO's. no lore? they have books sitting around filled with it! all you have to do is read it. They do have crafting, and its not a bad system at all. Crafting is a very good way to make a bit of money if you work at it.
and by the way, WoW's entire endgame is raiding and pvp...

Warcraft lore is about is an inconsistant load of crap that get re-written every release to include the knewest kool thing. There is absolutley no reason to even look at it because its a waste of time. Have you read those novels? seriously bad fiction there.
Yes WoWs crafting can make you money. Does it offer much beyond that ...not realy. Its not fun, its not ineteractive. its not complex, it just pure grinding and worst of all most of the stuff you make would have been good 6 levels ago and even then its still inferior to loot from dungeons.
WoW raids are ok, other games do it better. WoWs PvP is a complete joke and an after thought. Both are unnecesarily grindy and result in nothing but some purples on your character.
edit: Just to make it as clear as possible what I am saying is that WoW does alot of things and does them fairly well. It just doesn't offer anything particularly deep.
Level Grind -> Item Grind -> Raid Grind -> PVP Grind != Fun to me.
It was playable for a couple of months. But is stupidly repetitive and easy. It is pretty much a MMORPG on training wheels. Unfortunately it is a sign of things to come in the future.

The real question is why does mmorpg.com have a love affair with EvE. Best PVE game? Holy crap.

good point
