I agree; all the extra detail is rarely ever noticeable when most of the time you're zoomed way out from your character and tilted away from the ground or architecture you're nearby

Though, sometimes you do notice it, like me now after walking out of the crafting building door in Lomshir, crashing to desktop, relogging back in mysteriously dead in a pit of grey con lions pinched between a bush and skeletal remains of some elephant sized creature. You can really see all the little nooks and crannies; deteriorated spots of bone and count all the leaves, see rocks on the ground etc. Yeah, beautiful...

...I think I'd much rather have preferred to not memory leak crash and somehow autorun into a pit of lions in the first place. Only time I get to stop and smell the roses is when I'm face first in them from crap like that.

ya..some people like a little bloom lighting ..and others like bloom lighting from hell *looks at the LotR screenies*  ya thats a bit bright..and bloomed out the ass

    Vanguard Needs more bloom!!!

but HEY! at least overly bloomed graphics dont look like plastic.. huh??!!  damn..what an excellent idea for cover-up.    yet..so simplistic to do..and yet so anime appealing

heres a quicky screeny i found in my screeny folder during beta.  again. click for full screen. sorry for the shaders/shadows.  was on a 6800

oh..and not light bloomed like mad either. Imagine this screenshot with Lord of the Rings light blooming?  WoW!!!  er.. I mean.. wow!!  *snickers*

seriously..this game could use more light blooming as most of the folks here agree.  the ultimate cover-up

right.. you like the the transition in each model. the shadows and how everything blends. you like how light blooming enhances and blends the environment.

actually I wish I could increase the bloom factor in VG, but I cant. Even still without incredibl light blooming I still think the game looks pretty damn good.

but.. hell if it had the same amount of bloom that Lord of the Rings Online did or any other game for that matter.. well.. it just doesnt have that sort of light bloom.

It's because of so many details, which add up to a huge difference.  Doesn't anyone at Sigil have any sense of artistic aesthetics?  What the hell is that lizard mount thing - it's like they went crazy bump mapping a crap placeholder model and texture.  The rider looks ok, but everything else looks like it belongs in EQ's first expansion.

Personally, I think LOTRO screenshots make Vanguard's look like a joke, and its high system requirements being such an ironic punchline.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I think LotRo could use a bit more bump mapping but theyre still pretty good. I still prefer vanguards graphics though - everything seems a tad bit more 3-d.

Well since this has turned into a LOTRO thread, I might aswell ask some very general questions if no one minds.

    1. How is the world divided up in LOTRO? Separated by portals and zones? Mostly seamless? Instanced zones and non-instanced zones?

    2. The mounts in those pictures, how are they doled out? Able to be purchased from vendors at a certain level and such?

I think "good" is very much left to personal opinion. I think the LotR graphics, while lovely, are very much simpler than Vanguards with much much fewer polygons and little to no bump mapping. You really can't compare the two fairly as one is very high polygon/detail and one is very low polygon. Also, the world of Vanguard dwarfs that of LotR. Comparing the two games graphics is pure opinion and saying LotR graphics make Vanguard look like a joke is to totally ignore the reality of the two games designs.

People used to say Lineage 2 looks sooo much better than EQ2. Lineage 2 being low polygon with a very distinct art style, and EQ2's being very very high polygon/bump mapping with it's own less distinct art style. It's all purely based on opinion and not on fact. Fact of the matter is EQ2 is light years ahead of Lineage 2's graphics, yet people who love the Lineage 2 art style will say EQ2 is a joke in comparison.

Vanguard's view distance alone blows away any other mmorpg, ever, including LotR online. If you want to talk about art style, that is just opinion, which we know are like earholes.

Here is a technically superior screenshot from Vanguard which proves that if you like LotR's art style better you will like the graphics better no matter how low poly the graphics are. Click it for it's own window (recommended).

I think the original posters first screenshot is better than any of the LOTRO screens.  Especially with Elijah Woods mug plastered all over them..

Besides which the game is made by Turbine.  If anyone remembers AC2 when it first came out, pretty much all it had going for it was graphical appeal.  Aside from that is was a pretty shitty game, much the same as LOTRO is rumoured to be.

WOW in Middle Earth?  How innovative...

Honestly, I think the graphics in that screenshot look.... well, not impressive at all. I've seen WAY better graphics, not only in developing games but in current games as well.

Look at the edges of the horse against the sand and how rough and jagged it looks. It looks flat. It actually looks more like you photoshoped the picture of the horse onto a screen shot of the beach. The only thing I think looks some what good in that screen shot is the sky, but even that isn't impressive.

I've been watching this game for some time now. I'm a old SWG vet (played the first year and a half) and since then I've bounced back and forth from game to game looking for the right game to fill the void I've had after leaving SWG. I've found some fun games here and there but nothing has grabbed me like SWG did.

When I heard of Vanguard and read of all the wonderful things this game had to offer it became the game to look forward to. I kept up with news and loved everything I heard about it.

THEN a few months back I started seeing screenshots and game play videos that worried me. The graphics and character movements and actions looked bad, IMO, especially when you compare them to other games I've been looking at or have played, even some of the free to play game look better than Vanguard.

I posted my concerns and everyone insisted that they would look better once released since that wasn't the finished product....

WELL, I bought the game and have been playing it for the past few weeks. Lucky for me my PC can...somewhat handle higher settings, so I've been able to experience the high end graphics (in some areas), and in my opinion, they look lousy. I find they are more reminiscent of the old EQ graphics.

Overall, I am very disappointed in Vanguard. I've had to force myself to log on and keep giving it a chance, but I am just board and unimpressed. Not only are the graphics unappealing but the character customization I heard so much about was a huge disappointment. I honestly could care less about my feet and hand size, I rather have more hair and make-up / face options.

I've tried many different classes and areas and so far have not seen one thing in game that made me stop and say "Wow, that looks great!"

I can play EQ2 on the highest settings, smoothly on my laptop and it looks amazing! But I can even move my character on the crappy balanced setting in Vanguard on my laptop.

And on top of the unimpressive graphics, I've found the game boring and empty...that's right, empty. I hardly ever see other players even in the large cities, and this vast world is nothing but the same rocks, tress and land over and over. It like they wanted to make the world so huge, so they copy and pasted the land over and over again. There is nothing unique at all.

I have played both Vanguard and LotRO, and I disagree with the above statment.

Vanguards view distance is no better than LotRO. You can stand on a hill in LotRO and look very far with an excellent blurring effect that actually enhances the feeling of it being far away in the horizon.

If you stand on a hill in Vanguard, you can look very far, but your computer grinds to a more or less complete stop while it tries to figure out what to show on the screen and don't even consider trying to turn around to look the other way....

So no doubt in my mind that LotRO has the better view distance of the two games.

And I actually do no think that screenshot from Vanguard is very good. It can deliver nice graphics, but that screenshot is not proof of it.

Turbine has created a better looking game with simpler means. Perhaps in 3 or 4 years we will be able to say that Vanguard looks better, but at the moment there is no doubt in my mind that LotRO is the prettiest of the two.
