I know of course there must be a nay-sayer in any thread but why would you say such a thing?

It is sci-fi with a pretty unique feudal structure to its society, it has aliens, bizzarre powers, genetic clonings, huge worms, interstellar wars etc etc...

Oh yes, Dune MMO is the only way to go.

I you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.  I f you teach a man to fish he'll sit by a river all day and drink beer.

I support Belgiums efforts to get noticed ... at all.

    count me in!!

Trying hard to become human as it should be.

  • Seeing how ALL of the other high profile IPs have been butchered I've become only lukewarm to the idea...

I would play a Dune MMOG...but if I had a choice I would rather have a Cyberpunk MMOG instead...something like Ghost in the Shell or an Anarchy Online II.

I would play it if it is well done and a real 3rd gen mmorpg. It has to be so much fun that I do not see the grinding,

No! I love Dune but it can't withstand translations to other media as far as I'm concerned.

Secondly, its the whole "Jedi" problem all over again. Think of a freaking Jedi, he's like some kind of psychic paladin with a laser sword. A lot of them are mechanics and fighter pilots too. You can't balance a Jedi with regard to anyone else while being canonical and conversely anyone is naturally going to want to play a Jedi. Similarly, Dune is practically all about Fremen and Sardaukar. Anyone else is hopelessly outclassed against them except for a couple of Duke Leto's elite soldiers. And Bene Gesserit? Yeah. Who wants to be the levies the Sardaukar can beat 10 for 1? So either everyone has to be Sardaukar and Fremen or they have to be nerfed.

I don't think it'd work or be very enjoyable.

But Sardaukar and Fremen are just a tiny minority. (Beside, the fremen have nothign special in their abilities, they are just fanatical and superbly trained, no special augmentations, so I would keep them out of the equation).

Sardaukar are elite imperial soldiers, they would not do good PCs. Same for Bene Gesserit, they are an extreme minority.

From my point of view, the Dune MMorpg would have a better chance to be a actual mmoRPG than the wh40k one. Dune's houses, contrary to Warhammer races, do have alliances so seeing two guys from different houses going around together would not be strange at all... Of course certain houses hate each other, but not even that would make it impossible as historically it happened that old enemies would have pupils of the other house in their court as hostages/guests.

Their actually was a Dune MMO in the works some time ago, a company called Cryo-Networks (not Cryo Software!) was producing Dune Generations which was based more on the mini series than the novels. The game itself was more of a strategy rpg than anything but it a really great community at the time and many good features that people were really looking forward to.

Unfortunately, the whole project went belly-up when Cryo-Network went out of business in '02, dragging the Dune Generation down with ship. You can find more about the ill fated game here: http://pc.ign.com/objects/016/016418.html.

What does this mean for Dune fans though? Well it means that the owners of the IP are not opposed to an MMO title, so we may very well see something at some point. Also, with a brand new Dune novel having been release Brian Herbert, I highly recomend it if you havn't read it yet, and the conclusion coming next year, we might just see a resurgence in popularity.

I would love a Dune mmo. It would blow SWG, Stargate and Star Trek out of the water.

Sure. But only if I can ride sandworms and use them to tear down walls and eat people. Otherwise, no way.

Could work but i think it would be better as a political type MMO based around wealth management ect.... you cannot have a whole MMO on the DUNE planet (arakis or however its called) there is not enough there... But if each player was part of a major family and you fought for control of the different planets ect that could be cool. I would not be sold on an avatar ground combat dune game though, as i think it would be very lame.

Hell Yeah, the concept in the entire Dune series is amazing. Translation into a game would do well, if of course not traded and beat to nothing by SOE, and anyone who played Matrix Online before and after the switch would agree with me. As for the Sadaukar and Freemen. It could be made into an extreme class because you gotta think it requires lots of training and weathering to be that elite. So the abillity to gain a class like that would have to be a grand quest or mission within the game. As far as planets, well perpetual is making the Startrek mmo, and in this mmo you can touch down on planets.  Why not transform that same idea into a Dune mmo and change a starship to a Heighliner. It is as simple as, how graphically awesome would it be to see foldspace on your pc screen.

Now lets transition to the idea of Houses in the game. Houses could be the "guild" so to speak for an mmo of Dune. Think of it your own planet, your own house. A house minor to start with, but a house none the less. See it as, you start as house minor and through technological advances or trade, or even millitary exploits could maybe gain you rank in the imperium as a "house major". Maybe even soon after gain a fife on Arrakis (Dune) itself. The possibllities for a Dune mmo are endless even when you stick to the ideas of Frank and Brian Herbert.

a Dune MMO... would be very interesting and fun if it's done right and done well...

So yeh, I would play it if it's done right and polish well...

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

  • NetspookNetspook Member UncommonPosts: 1,583

That really depends on what kind of game they would make. Dune and Dune 2 were two completely different games. Dune 2 was really just Warcraft 2 with different graphic, and Dune 2000 wasn't much of an improvement.

The final result would decide if I was gonna play it. OP, you only said "MMO" - if the rest of the word was RPG, it would catch my attention, but if it was RTS, then probably not.

I am thinkin more along the lines of ,mmorpg
  • NevarionNevarion Member Posts: 274
Question is which time frame you choose? The books cover quite some and it differs a lot in setup and background.

So far I assume the consensus is to base it on the first book and maybe second one to some extend.
  • GildedoneGildedone Member Posts: 8
I havent gotten past book one but have read synopsies and over views of others. I think it should take alot of histroy from the prelude books and transfer some of the rivalries and allies and such into it. I am merely excited to the idea of the depth of political intrigue and technological smuggling stuff like that. That is what I have been looking for in an mmorpg for a long time. Originallity and it can be accessed in a Dune type universe.

See? This is exactly what I was talking about. People are going to want to be Fremen, Sardaukar, and Bene Gesserit. Just like they want to be the Jedi and Sith. Just like they wanted to be Wizards, Beornings, Noldor, and Dunedain.

In some cases those roles would work fine if you can move the time frame. Playing a Jedi in a KOTOR timeframe Star Wars MMO would make sense. Playing Noldor and Dunedain at the end of the Second Age would make since for a Tolkien-based game if those licenses were for sale. Only, some people also want to play in the time frame where the events actually described in the source material they're interested in are happening.

Like i said before it would need to make sardukar and Freemen a hard class to attain. Just like in the book not everyone can just be a freemen or sardukar or benne gesserit. Takes training

Amen man, soe destroyed one of my favorite mmorpg's, Matrix Online. Made everything about attaining a higher lvl in the game pointless due to their randomized fighting. If a Dune mmorpg was ever made I would pray they never even glanced at it lol.
