They are over 900,000 active subs now. They will reach their 1 mil+ subs within the next 30 days easily.
But how fast did World of Warcraft hit 1 mil subs? I know it was released in America Nov 04. I'm thinking Feb 05 is when it broke 1 mil, but not quite sure.
Looks like LoTRO is gathering online players almost as quickly as WoW did after it's release. But that isn't saying as much because now there are millions of mmo players looking for a new game thanks to WoW. OR is LoTRO stealing customers from the WoW numbers even more impressive?

No one cares
Hmmm...not that I'm arguing that LotR is a good game and its doing well, but last time I logged in (this last weekend) there were only 12 servers. I really don't think that there are 900k people playing on that few servers. There wouldn't be a square inch to move.

I think most voted for greater than 500k or less than 100k back in April.
I'm kind of surprised they haven't announcent it sooner. Also would like to know how many people went for the lifetime deal.

LoL I dont play but if this is true that there are only 12 servers then the OP is not telling the truth what a Troll.
It is probably mostly people that are looking for a new MMO to play between now and Conan/Warhammer's release. I wouldn't read anything into it.

Looking forward to: Aion
Played: WoW, Guild Wars
Hmmm, The LoTRO servers are everybit as populated as World of Warcraft, with a bigger game area in LoTRO now with their free expansion.
WoW as last I heard had about 9 mil subs. Take 9 times the 12 LoTRO servers and that's 108. 108 servers is just slightly less then the current number of WoW servers, is it not?
Remember that not all 900k are playing the game at exact same time!
And I can't say a lot as to my source of my information, but I CAN tell you it is from a very solid source of the Turbine customer service team who is a very good friend of mine. In a recent online chat, they told me that they are very close to 1 mil as of July 01.
Flame me or call me a liar I don't care, just be sure and tell me you're sorry when Turbine DOES make the announcement in the coming weeks.
Posted by a former Codemasters employee. Take it for what you will.
Well if it is reaching 1 Mil thats great.
Someone actually did a /who on all 12 US servers awhile back. It averaged out to around 2-5k on each server. The /who command though, didn't account for anonymous people.

Man, I'm not gonna flame you or call you a liar and I'm not going to "apologize" for making an observation about your statement...It would just seem to me that it would take more servers to house that many accounts (thats like 75,000 accounts per server). I know there is a difference between number of accounts and concurrency but 75k per.....??? sorry the math just doesn't work out.
Well, I guess we will see "in the next 30 days"
I don't find the comparison that good though. LotRO is reputed as a more casual game, and I don't see a reason to doubt that. A more casual game will be able to support more players on fewer realms, as not equally many will be online at the same time (fewer hours played each week per player). LotRO may very well be able to support double the number of open accounts on half as many realms, considering the casual factor and size of each realm.
If Turbine announces a 1 million number the question is how they phrase it. There's a significant difference between one million accounts created and one million open (paying) accounts.

Server capacity is also a question. I really don't see each server housing 75,000 accounts. IF the server capacity was 10,000, which I am pretty sure its not, if there was an odd peak one day of say 20,000 players trying to get in, it would be mass chaos. I haven't had a queue logging in lately either.
To hit 1 million subs with 12 servers would mean each server is housing over 83,000 accounts. (that means more people are residing in one server then most MMO's have total subs) It doesn't really matter how often the players play because you can not predict that. Number of servers has to be based on the server capacity and the number of active subs. Not whether its played casually or not, thats an unknown.
Again, I'm NOT saying LotRs isn't doing well. I'm 100% positive it is doing well. At this point however, I don't see it having 1 million subs without the supporting hardware.
hmm I can't see it only having 75k subscribers only also. Wasn't there some news source saying it was the second most popular mmorpg. If so, that would mean it had more than EQ2 which has 150k ish? Really surprised if it only has 12 servers. Strange.
I'm happy if Lorto is doing well, Turbine did pretty good job with that mmorpg.
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
ya misread there buddy, they said 75000 per server.. yeah im not buying that either, or that WoW is up to 9 million active accounts.. but i suppose since it costs 4cents an hour to play in china, then i could be wrong..
Here is the server list. There are 12.
lotro sell rates arent really that high, check amazon etc.
they might possibly break 500k for some time, if they are lucky, but thats about it. the sell rates are constantly going down, unlike e.g. wow(still #1).
oh, and btw, dont mix "sold boxes" with "subscriptions".
Oops sorry yeah. But ok lets say a number of 200-250k
200-250k/12 is 20k active subscribers per server. So either it has a high number of subscribers per server or it has a pretty low subscription level. I'm shocked it only has 12 servers really.
That would be US servers I take it? Don't forget there are a number of european servers as well.
However I wonder how many were stupid, like myself, and got the lifetime account only to discover that they really don't like the game after all...I mean I will forever be counted as an open account even if I haven't played one minute in the last 2 months!
Funny,
I heard that Lotro is going so bad that they'll have to close it down soon enough,
with only 2,500 players there's no chance they'll keep it up.
I know this because I saw it on a site once..
Oh, wait, I'm not OP, sorry.
This whole thread is BS.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
1 milion of subscribers arnt 1 milion active players, acutaly not even 50%, not even 1 person from all my frends that have LOTR gona continue to play LOTR after 30-31 july. No mttr how many more will buy the game in the future, LOTR lost alot of them in first 2 months and gona lose more, because the game is still a BETA version, need a huge and consistent update. Very posibile that in next months LOTR to become f2p with gamepack, no monthly fee, same like Archlord. they need very fast improvements or will be the bigest epic story game crash ever. Its a real fatality that LOTR story with over 1 bn fans cant get more peoples to play the game, because of publishers or developer.
vaedur
Is there actually any official report that says Lotro is close to 1 million subscribers?
why should there? just use common sense(warning: epixxed rare) to disprove this number.
So what do I get if the guarantee proves wrong? You're going to refund my time for reading this? I'll send you a bill.
