I just went back a few weeks ago just to see how this "progress" is going and I've already unsubscribed. There were 2 heavy population servers, probably around 4 medium servers, and the rest were light or very light. Thats 6 servers with a decent population out of a total of 25. This is not doing great as far as im concerned, especially comparing how all of the pre-cu servers were medium to heavy. Sure it may be doing a little better than it was at the launch of the NGE, but its still not out of the water. Just IMO, the game feels empty now because you don't have to rely on anybody else to play the game, and if i wanted that I would play a single player rpg, which are boring to me in the first place.

Ok a few weeks ago Ch 6 was already in place. So you are saying you don't have to rely on anyone to play the game. Hmmmm ok this statement alone makes it sound like you have no idea what your talking about. Did you really play a few weeks ago or was it more like months ago?
I promise you that in game now you will not be doing to many things alone. Rest assured you have to rely on other people in game now.
Once again people coming into the current forum trying to bash the game with old information.
I would love to see you solo hmmmm let me think how about an Albotross Peko Peko or most of the Mustafar quest... or any number of things in game these days.....

That's so funny when you consider people here say the same things about pre-CU. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people talk about how everything was soloable pre-CU, when in fact many things were quite difficult such as a NS Elder (particularily with a stun baton), or down right impossible such as a Kunga rocksmasher that had 100% protection from blast and kinetic damage. I couldn't even scratch that dude as a swordsman!
It seems the more things change the more the arguments stay the same.

It was all about making a name for yourself on the server.

Now thats odd cause I rarely PvP'ed yet I still had lots of fun. However I do agree with you about making a name for yourself, but there were many other ways to do that then just PvP.
And the rest of your 10 points are quite valid, but there was virtually no attempt to fix it. It wasn't from lack of ideas either because there were pages of it on the forums. I will say this though, I will take those 10 points and happily play pre-CU again. To coin a phrase from these forums it was simply a matter of adapting.
I loved the devs' handling of the double-sliced weapons fiasco. The smugglers begged to know if it was legit, and the devs mumbled something about "working as intended" and then of course started banning those who did it because the devs would never call it an exploit, or clarify what WAS intended.
So much bullshit from the devs. They frack something up, refuse to own up to it and clarify what was intended, and then of course the infamous unannounced stealth nerf in a vain attempt to make it seem as if the fracked up thing never happened.
Pure weaseldom. These guys WONDER why no one trusts them or assumes they make good faith mistakes.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
As one who is a recent new player, I am happy to hear a lot is on the horizon for this game.
In many ways, this game is easily the best sci fi MMORPG out there and close to the best MMORPG overall.
Very true.
I wish all the old miserables would just go away. I suppose maybe there is nothing better out there, so they must come here and be bitter about a, G A M E.
get a life ppl, move on, its been YEARS since NGE hit, SWG has accomplished alot since then, let me ask you what have you accomplished, u know IRL.

It hasnt been years since the nge. And SWG has accomplished alot. the only thing they have done since the nge was start to bring back PRE-NGE things. like Bast master sounds alot like CH which was creature handler, this thing in the big bas where each type of toon will get a different buff.. that was taken away with the nge ... geuss what they are bringing that back.. plans to alot more things in the future are very similar to PRE NGE
So if u think about it SOE has done nothing new YET. Even though they are taking a step in the right direction (old game) they are still moving backwards.

Besides which, who do people think SOE is trying to appeal to by bringing things back into the game?
The current subscribers? Doubtful when they already have your money and subsciptions. I believe they're trying to appeal to past subscribers, or the old "miserables" as one person put it.
It's been my experience that those who do not have an active subscription have a greater voice with SOE.

Has it not been years ? I thought NGE came out in november 2005, that would be more than 1 y e a r i think.
Its sad, people so upset over a freakin video game that changed, YEARS ago....
Who cares anymore. Who cares what was in NGE or pre CU and what was not, for those playing now, all the matters is what the game is and what it will be.

Actually, I think everyone should care.
The reason I'm upset is because of the lies and manipulation we've had to endure. If we do not speak out against it, it will surely happen again.
If you want your game to be a positive experience you must hold SOE accountable to it's subscribers. Otherwise what is going to prevent something similar happening to your game, or any other SOE product for that matter. What happens next when subs begin to taper off again? Do they remove another 5 of the 9 profs? Will you be happy with that?

I wish, people in our country would care 1/2 as much about real world events and things our government does.... than they do about some stupid game company that is simply trying to make money.
To your point, its not going to happen again, SOE has suffered financially because of what they did.
The message has been sent, there is no sense carrying it around with you anymore.
Let it be their problem. Shed that baggage ! Maybe burn the CDs and boxes or something !

Well, I can't speak for everyone who has a negative opinion of SOE/LA's treatment of the SWG gaming community, but I care a great deal about real world events and things our government does....and talk about them elsewhere where they are on topic.
A common thread though is the pattern of lies and deceit that SOE/LA have concerning SWG, and our government, which is headed up by people of similiar, if not worse, moral turpitude.
Much of the anger of ex SWG players concernes the the flood of mendacity that issued forth from SWG executives and developers, of which the NGE is the premiere example. Thunderheart and Q3PO once told us that changes to the game would be telegraphed well in advance via the In Concept/In Development/In Testing process. The NGE blatantly violated this supposedly "mandatory" process for alterations of the game. Then of course there was the NGE trashing much of the Trials of Obi Wan expansion only a day after its official release.
The SWG devs have been slowly putting things back in from the old game, like Beast Master which is sort of like Creature Handler, but a pale imitation of what Creature Handler was.
The most important things that they seemingly can't put back, though, is ditching the level system and bringing back a skill based system with 32 mix and match profession trees. The devs con't have the stones to manage that kind of system.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I think this has everything to do with real world events (re: consumer rights)
I believe that many people in todays society have become apathetic to being treated this way by a corporation.
What responisbility does SOE have to you once they have your money? If your server was down for 3 weeks this month you'd expect some kind of reparation right? And I believe you'd be justified in expecting reparation.
Go check other forums, PotBS has several threads concerned about SOE being involved with the game. The Agency (which actually looks pretty cool) has some of the same because of SOE...
Their name took a big hit with the way they handled the NGE and the mere fact that when it went live the NGE was so badly done.
The vets may be disliked on this forum but they have done a lot to hopefully prevent future happenings like this to take place for other SOE games and perhaps other industry games. With all the stink this has caused I doubt another publisher/developer will be eager to repeat the same mistakes SOE has.
That being said, GreyPawn can say what he wans to about how well the NGE is doing, if it was doing well SOE would publish some FACTS to support it. They do not and will not. Until they show us some subscription numbers then his word is no more viable than anyones. It's all speculation but if the NGE was rocking and rolling then SOE would want to prove to the rest of the world that it was...
There are some Sci-Fi MMOs being developed right now due out around 2008-2009 that look downright incredible.
I know he's just the community relations dude but there seems to be a lot of people at SOE playing WoW. That's not neccessarily a bad thing, however their enjoyment of WoW seems to affect SWG and that I believe to be a negative thing. Raph Koster once descibed WoW (I can't remember the actual quote) as the best of the old style of MMO.
In contrast it's interesting to see someone else talk about whats neccessary for the future of MMO's as seen here.
I strongly believe that an MMO must be innovative (post-WoW era) to be successful. Otherwise a game will appeal to a fickle crowd who can and will leave on a whim (i.e. when the next fresh, new and exciting MMO is released). Passion for a game is what will maintain it's success for several years, and that kind of passion comes from a strong connection to the game and with your character.

There are quite a number of folks at SOE who enjoy WoW, just as I'm sure there are some SWG and EQ2 players over at Blizzard. Gamers who are professionals in the industry don't stop playing games simply because they are competitors. We all love games, and most will pick up anything new that graces the shelves at the local EB. And sentimentality doesn't stop on the corporate mark either, as you'll note in the same breath that I mention my WoW account I mention my 9 year old UO account.
I agree with you on that innovation must be present in a game to attract folks, but I feel the biggest thing keeping people is the community. Community building tools like player-run cities and player-owned housing really go a long way towards keeping a community like SWG's solid and thriving.
When you talk about innovation then one must raise questions such as AT AT Walkers never making the live game as a non decorative item. This also applies to capes, or dual weapons. We always hear response back that the art looks bad or the movement looks bad or it will create imbalance. One could state that the innovation is greatly required to fix the cape issue as well as the AT AT walker entering the live games. Innovation is greatly needed and most welcome as a gamer of SWG.
When we talk about innovation the request comes forth from the community that a collision system needs to be implemented in the ground game. We also hear from the community over the last 4 years that players would love to live in player apartments. We have also heard request for atmospheric flight. Another innovated request is the buildings in NPC cities such as the skyscrapers on Talus and Correlia serving no purpose at all. Players have requested that levels be placed in these buildings for game play and for living. Yet these ideals of innovation for the game play go unscratched. And here we are begging for innovation in SWG.
Players have been requesting new hair styles, new planets, new clothes, and the list goes on. For the last 4 years players have requested many innovations for game play and they have seem to be ignored until the recent staff changes. I hope that SWG is focused on these ideals and are willing to take the risk to build back SWG. But are the big wigs on the same page? You can get some vets back and raise the numbers but these common request that speak of game play innovation would draw larger numbers as well.
With the need for innovation and the creative influx of the Star Wars Universe in SWG how the heck are you guys going to do this without the proper resources that Lucas Arts, SOE, and Sony Japan are going to allow and “if” they will allow. Nobody knows the red tape over there but it is nice to see you take a lead on this.

GreyPawn,
I thank you for your insight. However, what I was saying was SOE people playing Blizzard games is not necessarily a bad thing. It's the influece that WoW has made on the choice of direction by those same people. Can you tell me that WoW has not influenced the direction of SWG?
Secondly, yes the community is one of the biggest aspects to keep people playing and paying. Yes player housing and player cities are a big part of that, but these things are 3 1/2 to 4 years old. These things were brought into SWG under a different vision. What innovations has SOE made within SWG in the last 2 years?

November is around the bend and it is 2007 so lets say more than 1 1/2 years ago.
OK sorry about the sarcasm
/sarcasm off
Actually, I think everyone should care.

SOE screwed up and it has cost them dearly.

I agree with you on that innovation must be present in a game to attract folks, but I feel the biggest thing keeping people is the community. Community building tools like player-run cities and player-owned housing really go a long way towards keeping a community like SWG's solid and thriving.
GreyPawn,
When you talk about innovation then one must raise questions such as AT AT Walkers never making the live game as a non decorative item.
