Personally, I'm glad we aren't getting the Climax version of the game. There were only 5 playable races and it was a 100% PvE game. It only covered the Reiksland. That would have gotten boring quickly. Reiksland is such a small part of the Warhammer world, to make that the only playable area was not a good thing. The races you could play were Human, High Elf, Dwarf, Halfling and Ogre. No Chaos, No Skaven, No Greenskin, No Dark Elf, No Wood Elf, No Lizardman, No Vampire Count, No Tomb King...they removed the very thing the table top game was about. I hate to see the hard work of developers get wasted, but I am glad this iteration was not brought to life.

There were Dark Elves and Wood Elves. The race of "Elf" was not directed in any of the three possible ways, so you could choose what kind of elf you played. Of course explaining a Dark Elf in human lands would have been fun.
As for it only being Reiksland, that is true, but they were doing it completely to scale and in full detail, including massive cities and a game world that they said would take a week to cross if you just held down forwards and went from one side to the other. "small", not at all.
Also it used a career system like WFRP- which meant VC was kind of available in the fact that you could become a necromancer. And you could become a chaos cultist, so Chaos were included. That makes 9 of the Warhammer tabletop armies playable...look at that, more than Mythic
And saying it was all PvE is wrong, it had career based PvP. Witch hunters would have been able to attack Necromancers and Chaos...well, think pretty much anyone could attaack Chaos cultists if they found them out etc.
And the reason it "removed everythin tabletop is about" is because it wasn't based on tabletop at all. It was based of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game.
Unfortunately, it didn't get released, but fortunately, Mythic's version is looking to be just as good in a different way, and will appeal to a lot more people.

Talk is cheap but that seems the only thing that some people in the MMO business can do.
I hope for a bug free launch of Age of Conan with stable servers with very little lag and I'm confident that Funcom has learned much since the launch of Anarchy Online six years ago.
Avery, you may claim that the initial post was not a flame but I've read it and frankly it comes across the same as punching someone and then trying to claim you just 'slipped'. The intent is pretty clear. I'm surprised you felt the need to make this post at all, Mark Jacobs posted on a Warhammer site explaining his opinions to the fans there. But you felt the need to pull it over onto the AoC board.
To what point? You're getting the exact reactions that anyone could have predicted.
As far as awards, there's only one real standard that I rate a developing game - posts from people who have played it. Now that Funcom has allowed people to play AoC's PvP and there are positive reponses that bodes well for the game. And there are some negative reactions too but WAR is starting to get the same mixture of mostly positive mixed with some negative reactions. In another post by Mark Jacobs he mentions this is entirely expected for a developing MMORPG.
As long as the positive ones outweigh the negative ones, then neither game should be in trouble and are on the way to shaping up into playable products. Which one you choose to play depends on each person, that's why we have a free market.
It's when you start to encounter consistent negative reviews from preview players & beta-testers that are the warning signs something it wrong. We saw that for Vanguard and other games before it. We haven't seen that for either of these games.
Edit - Oh Yes. Fion, provide an actual link to the 1million SWG subscribers evidence. I did Google it and found nothing refering any such press release.
Damn, people. It's like you guys have something more invested in these games then a longing to play and more time then you know what to do with. Stop bashing AoC and stop bashing WAR. People are going to play what they want and people are going to switch games and then reminisce about the old days when they used to play (Generic Game X) and how that game kicked so much ass and how this new game pales in comparison and how they wished that they would remake (Game X) with new graphics and a couple of tweaks here and there. Man, I really miss Asheron's Call.
I don't think it matters. I hope both games are good. But they are both targetting different audiences. AoC is appealing to the kiddie audience with its emphasis on blood, gore, nudity and the M rating while War is attempting to lure the older more mature audience that played DAOC. That being said the War dev makes a good point about flash over substance and the importance of polish at release. I played AO and DAOC at release and in beta and I thought both games were fantastic games. Unfortuntaley for AO had it awful technical problems that made the game virtually unplayable for a very long time. But there are important things we can learn from AO's release. Funcom stuck with AO and made it a fantastic game nad Funcom must understand the importance of a stable polished release. AO could have been a huge hit with betterr stability. I would hope that Funcom will make sure this time they wait until they are sure the game is ready before even considering releasing the game.
To even suggest that WAR is going after a mature audience is hilarious! They are going after Bnet kids and every thing about their tittle caters to the less mature gamer. Cartoony graphics, UBER casters and zomg 1337 ELVES!!!!!
Not saying it will be a bad game, it will be better then WoW and the developers have a history of good pvp. But the community will suck just like WoW.
and how is AoC community going to be better when everyone is talking about sex and boobs already?
Back in 2001, DAoC was shown at E3 in a even more playable state than WAR is being shown at Leipzig. At the end of the show, most of the awards were won by Anarchy Online and Star Wars: Galaxies, we were pretty much not skunked. Years later, after all three games launched, we were more successful than either of those games based on any criteria I can think of (subscriber base, metacritic, etc..). Judge for yourself the validity/importance of winning awards at Trade Shows.
We are, of course, proud when we win awards but when we don't, I don't lose any sleep over it. In the end, it is the players who will determine if we made a great game and I am, as always, perfectly content to leave such judgments in the hands of those who matter most, the gamers.
Just realized I had a typo and the edit time has expired so I'll correct it here:
Where I said:
At the end of the show, most of the awards were won by Anarchy Online and Star Wars: Galaxies, we were pretty much not skunked.
It should be:
At the end of the show, most of the awards were won by Anarchy Online and Star Wars: Galaxies, we were pretty much skunked.
In terms of comparisons, well, AO launched with huge technical problems (well-documented on the Web), its NA/European box sales were a fraction of ours (NPD/PC Charts), and our Metacritic for DAoC is still the second highest of all MMORPGS (88%) to date and it is second only to WoW, we almost swept all the end-of-the year MMO awards, and our top monthly subscription rate was a heck of a lot higher (MMORPG charts). That pretty much sums up all the main categories that I can think of. However, I think that the Fucom guys did a nice job of recovering from and making AO a much, much better game that it was but at launch it was not anywhere near as good of a game as DAoC. I don't do this to dump on the Funcom guys at all but, as I've always said, that its not how you look before you launch that counts, it is how you look 30 days after launch that really matters.
Mark
What ever you guys/ girls think, in a thread all about asking AoC was nominated (Subsequently WON) and WAR wasn't, was it really necessary to bring up AO and DAoC? Also brings to light the fact that even a WAR developer was impressed by the ability of Funcom to turn a not so hot launch around - ALL those years ago... Sour Grapes? Unfortunately, equating it to a past success doesn't work - WAR isn't DAoC, and AoC isn't AO. It's easy to placate your critics and fans with comparisons like that, but they're simply not realistic.
even AoC's website admits that WAR was nominated too just that AoC won..
"Funcom and Eidos are also very proud to have won the OMEGA award for “Best Online Game”, presented by a German online games magazine association made up of the most important gaming media in Germany; including two of the largest gaming web sites. Other nominees for this award included: ‘Warhammer Online’, ‘Hellgate: London’ and ‘Unreal Tournament 3’."

Notice most of the people who have been saying we will play AoC for quite some time are not the ones doing that? See how you and many other users who only want to play WAR and not AoC are the ones doing most of the talking about sex and boobs in Age of Conan? Case and point.

I guess you choose not to look at all of the topics of "WOW THERE IS GOING TO BE SEX IN THIS GAME" , and it seems little kids are being led to believe they get to watch it, I don't think anyone who plans on playing warhammer cares about small features like that in a game.

I guess you didn't read my entire post, or have selective reading. It isn't the people who have been saying they wanted to play AoC for quite some time, making these topics. The people doing this are people who are trolling, immature children, and WAR fans like Jor888. I distinctly remember him posting false information about Age of Conan on the WAR forums here in three or four threads and I had to go correct him. Don't get me wrong, I do like the way WAR looks, and have discussed it on the WAR forums before, I get along with most of the WAR forum users, but there are specific ones that always seem to pop up here looking to incite flames. I do like how you read only part of my post though and it wasn't even long. But then again, like I have said, you are following WAR which is why you would want to touch base on that part of the post.

Did you even read the thread you are pointing out? There is nothing misleading about it. Sex is in the game... it fades to black... you get a buff... it fits with the Conan IP. I don't see where anyone is trying to "trick" kiddies into thinking AoC has pornographic mini-games. Having sex in a game is of course debatable. In this case since it has the appropriate rating and fits the IP I see no harm. I highly doubt anyone intending to play this game is basing that decision on the fact that you can have sex. I may or may not play this game... I have been looking forward to WAR personally... Both sides get a bad rap because of a select few who want to lie and spin instead of just hyping their own game.

This is completely true about the bad rap, but at the same time the flame wars and debates add major PR for both games, and it makes people research the games more and more. But like you said, many people are blowing this way out of the water and turning everything into things that it shouldn't be.

Which is why I stay in the official forums. I come to mmorpg.com for a good laugh and topics along the line of "D&D is a copy of austin powers". Try not to take anything in these forums too seriously, because no matter how good your rebuttals are, all it takes is one person to not read it in its entirity and flame.

At the same time though, I am all over the main forums, my guild forums, and Aocmmorpg.com, I come here in hopes to enlighten the misinformed. When people have serious questions on the game I try to help, but it seems more often than not no matter what the topic is, there will be flames.

I totally agree, but people who want info from a game and skip the offical source, are usually the same people who start debates just to post negative info on a game competing with theirs. Anyone who needs any info, need just visit official sources and skip the flamers.

I have no issue with aggressive posting... look at my history. I hate misinformation and the spinning that happens. I am all for conflict but people need to cowboy up and be men about it... even the women! Use facts to drive a point home. You and I know this... there are so many out there that don't though. I like these boards... they give me a focus for my raging inner child.

The thing I find ironic about this kind of post from a games company dev is not that it makes me think "AoC got the awards, so maybe it will be better than WAR despite what this guy says", but that actually it sounds like I should go back and give AO another try.
I can't buy AoC or WAR at the moment to see for myself which I prefer, so I have no way to actually evaluate whether either will be better for me than the slightly bizarre combination of WoW + EVE that I play now. But I can go back to AO. So all this "mine is still better than yours" type of dev comment has done is to make me think again ... about a game that isn't either AoC or WAR.

I think overall that was the point of him pointing out that awards mean little pre-release to actual gameplay. Thay are used for hype .
AOC won this award because they released more information that was not seen before. WAR releases information all the time, and they basicly showed nothing that we haven't seen before.
With that said, i hear there was a lot more people at the WAR booth then the AOC booth all day.

Warhammer Online booth was always busy at Leipzig
Funcom booth was directly opposite at the Goa Team. Mythic booth was bigger and busier than theirs. Plus that Warhammer Online game worked where Age of Conan had some problem.

I 2nd that.

Other nominees for this award included: ‘Warhammer Online’, ‘Hellgate: London’ and ‘Unreal Tournament 3’."

Not saying it will be a bad game, it will be better then WoW and the developers have a history of good pvp. But the community will suck just like WoW.

Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.

Winning an award is still a feather in the cap for Age of Conan and Funcom.
Those who says otherwise are just holding a grudge.
